Before America had official National Landmarks or historic districts, we had the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS). The HABS project began in 1933, putting to work thousands of unemployed architects, draftsmen, and photographers to document America's historic buildings. Two of The Heritage Society's structures, the 1847 Kellum-Noble House and the 1850 Nichols-Rice-Cherry House, were recorded during the earliest days of HABS. In the fall of 2011, three more of The Heritage Society's historic structures were added to the archive. This exhibit features the intricate architectural drawings and photographs from those surveys and shows how the information is used to preserve the structures for the future.
The Heritage Society is funded in part by a grant from the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.

The FotoFest 2012 Biennial

A six week biennial festival that will include exhibitions on contemporary Russian photography, international meeting place portfolio reviews for artists, forums, workshops, evenings with photography artists and an international print auction.
FotoFest International, founded in 1983 in Houston, Texas, is the first and longest-running international Biennial of photography and photo-related art in the U.S.
The FotoFest Biennial and art programs are known as platforms for ideas and discovery, combining museum-quality art with important social and aesthetic issues. The Biennial exhibitions curated by FotoFest give priority to the works of important but little-known photographic artists from the U.S. and around the world.
In addition to exhibitions, the FotoFest Biennial features a large portfolio review program for photographic artists, a film and video series, conferences, multi-media installations, a Fine Print Auction, and four-color exhibition catalogue.
This six week biennial festival event begins on March 16, 2012 and will include exhibitions on Contemporary Russian Photography, International Meeting Place Portfolio Reviews for Artists, Forums, Workshops, Evenings with Photography Artists and an International Print Auction.

Verdi's music heightens emotions in this sweeping drama set during the turbulence of sixteenth-century Europe.

Bike to Work Day Friday, April 13, 2012

Mayor Annise D. Parker has declared Friday, April 13, 2012 as Bike to Work Day to encourage riders to choose pedal power for their daily commute to work and to raise awareness of the City's bikeway network.
Organized Bike to Work rides will depart from seven locations around Houston at 7:30 a.m. and end at City Hall around 8 a.m. for a brief presentation by Mayor Parker, Public Works Director Dan Krueger and members of the biking community followed by a free breakfast.
During the City Hall presentation, bicyclists will learn more about upcoming projects and green initiatives, as well as talk about how easy it is to travel through Houston on a bicycle and share information about favorite bike routes and trails.
Air up your tires, put on your best riding attire and meet at one of the seven designated start locations. All riders are encouraged to wear bike helmets while cycling as well as get a bicycle tune up periodically.
