  1. Walked by a few times is weekend: it was packed. Looks like the crowd migrated from drinkery too, which coincidentally was empty.
  2. Went here this weekend. Crowd was a bit douchey for my tastes. (Friday night). Waited 30 minutes for a drink-- they ended up giving my girlfriend and I free drinks and shots (35 dollars worth to be exact). Not an awful place, not great. Interesting drink menu and an assortment of edible shots were neat.
  3. I like that rendering. But I think this is just "architects gone wild" (or they had no billable hours)... Camden owns the property if I recall.
  4. Darn, I wanted petco so I could walk over and play with puppies and kittens on demand!
  5. As a structural engineer who acts as Quality assurance engineer on many projects--- I can confirm this.
  6. Not trying to insert skepticism into this but does anyone have reservations that our source on these rumors is a person named after throwing fecal matter?
  7. google " Houston's downtown skyline to be reshaped" then hit the first link. It will get you passed the paywall. /edit: passed & past--- silly grammar
  8. Filling the time until Astoria is built... Either that, or Astoria fails to secure funding and we have a huge thread on a new Wendy's under construction next door
  9. https://www.dropbox.com/s/8vu6vmz8b1fha1d/609Main_brochure%20copy.pdf Brochure link, for those interested.
  10. That is a pretty design. I like it. I hope they go taller as they imply. That'd be a nice skyline changer at 70 floors.
  11. Are these going to be another of those "Tin town"/Aluminum sided homes?
  12. Get ready to get nerded out..Those are isolated shallow foundations or footings. Theyre typically used in low loading situations, many times theyre unreinforced. Square footings are the natural choice for cases where a single column load is to be supported. This appears to be the case above. I'm taking your word that concrete was poured in and not lean concrete or soil stabilization material. If it was concrete, burying of the footing is not that unusual. I'll simply quote my old foundations design book, (Engineering of Foundations-Rodrigo Salgado - Purdue University) Chapter 8, Shallow foundations in Soil From a difference source, a rough schematic of a footing with design variables for bearing calculations. Note the column where axial load is transferred in above the surface of the soil, while the bearing is below. That column could be steel (known as I-beams to most) or reinforced concrete. I seriously doubt this McDonalds is building a steel reinforced concrete structure. Therefore It would not surprise me if there are dowels/baseplates for their steel columns later that are buried to reduce damage or trip hazards while they work on other elements of the structure. All this I've said is an educated guess based on two pictures---neither of which actually show the footings. I deal in the industrial world, not commercial. I could still be incorrect
  13. Good project Looks like the tower only takes up a portion of the lot. maybe 1/2 to 1/4 with the rest being parking garage.
  14. Majorica is awful. Service is slow. Been there a few times and I always leave irritated.
  15. It gets uncomfortably warm at worst for both cities. Chicago at least has wind that can make it pleasant in the middle of summer. Both cities also cool down significantly at night too. Houston gets hot... like the feeling on your face after opening an oven that's been on for 3 hours. My best sense of comparison is when I go cycling. In Chicago I could manage a 40 mile ride mid-day in the summer. In Houston; I'll normally get heat stress after about 15 miles if I did a mid-day ride in open sunlight in August. (even with a camelback/waterbottle). Ive lived here for 4 years and my bodies ability to acclimate to the heat still hasn't caught up. . I dont complain though--- The winters here are faaaantastic. I havent turned my heater on once this winter!
  16. Thats awful to hear. Glad youre okay. The only crime Ive experienced in Midtown was my Yakima Roof Rack (for bikes) was crowbared off the top of my car and stolen. Middle of a Sunday. The thing had 5 locks too... I was pissed! Speaking of which, if anyone hears/sees anything in regards to this... let me know. That thing was 700 bucks.
  17. If Chevron builds another highrise on the YMCA site.... I wouldnt expect it to be much different than the two enron high rises.
  18. My wish list for this site is a 6 story+ building apartment/condo with street retail...
