  1. Not that long ago, they took literally years reworking the marble facade. I suspect 806 Main would be a cake walk in comparison.
  2. I never could keep the GM body lettering system straight. I'd refer to the Chevette as a complete POS except that doing so would be an insult to self respecting dookie everywhere. When my Pinto died (actually, not that horrible a car in the context of the time), I was actually talked into buying one as my first new car with a window sticker, since our neighbor was a Chevy dealer. Shift knobs lasted about a week or two at best, build quality was nasty, and the clutch was going out at just over 10K miles when I was rear ended by a guy in an early 70s Catalina, totaling that turkey. GM was balking at the warranty claim on the clutch, claiming that for all they knew I could be using the car as a taxi. Really - that was their actual excuse. A two door Chevette taxi. Riiiiiiiiight. I haven't bought a GM product since. My only excuse for driving such awesomely bad cars was that I was a student at the time and just didn't have the bucks. Unlike a guy I worked with who actually ordered a Cimarron so as to get it with hand crank windows. In the late 70s, front drive was practically unknown to US manufacturers except on the Toronado/Eldorado, even though by then it had started to be more prevalent among the Europeans - for example, the Fiat 128, VW Rabbit/Golf/Scirocco and Dasher/Passat, Ford Fiesta, etc.
  3. When I was in high school back when the earth was cooling, we had some foreign exchange students, and sent a few of our own elsewhere as well. That was a much smaller scale thing than what this looks like, though.
  4. I have a colleague who just moved to town. He's relieved to see that he is among the "richer people" - even if it was by accident.
  5. In Woodland Heights, we have both the tiles and the obelisks (to the extent they've survived).
  6. Heeyyyyyyyy... what's so bad about seedy? Driving past on Milam earlier today, I saw a Harvey sign on the fence. Looks like there will be more cement trucks to dodge sooner rather than later there.
  7. Digging way back to before I began killing off brain cells, I think the Shakey's in Town & Country took the place of a Panjo's Pizza.
  8. You're right, Nate... how long has it been since the original Peterbilt Dodge Ram pickup was The New Cool Thing?
  9. Isiah Carey used to work in Little Rock... (I've resisted posting this as long as I could. NSFW.) (At least he got a Web Redemption out of it.)
  10. I recall reading somewhere (perhaps further up this very thread) that the Kim Son garage is going to be incorporated into it for resident parking.
  11. Yep. I forget just how old, but I wanna say well before the 08 plunge.
  12. I was wondering when this was going to happen. Between the general shrinkage of print journalism and the Chron's pulling their presses out of downtown a few years ago, getting the bulk of the rest of the staff out to the former Post facility seemed like an inevitability. Or we may end up with a newly vacant building downtown until the next cycle.
  13. More like crafty and cured (in the sense of pickling).
  14. Yikes. After reading that the old copy editor in me now needs a nice glass of gin, with a non creative twist of lime.
  15. Warren's never went out of business - it's still open on the other side of Market Square, and still owned by the (now) late Warren's sister. Its demolition was without benefit of a permit and started up at an ungodly hour so that nobody could get in the way to stop it.
  16. Nope. In this context, "real" in Spanish generally means "royal" or "regal." It's a derivation of "rey," or king.
  17. Hmmm... could "can't afford a better school" be perceived as insulting? Yep. In a heartbeat. Once again I am glad for my neutrality in what used to be the Southwest Conference. Now can y'all quit demonstrating your idea of School Spirit and get back to discussing the stadium?
  18. I like the way the security barricades are humanized on the plaza side. Thanks for the pics.
  19. Emporis has it at 230.43m, which works out to about 756'.
  20. On second thought, we might not even see much of Two Pipe Wrench Plaza from that angle. Good work, MW (though I might put 609 Main just a skosh to the right from where you have it, and a bit shorter - as per Emporis it's 7m shorter than 700 Louisiana, and a bit further away than the Castle of Commerce from this perspective).
  21. UH is a good school because it gives its students a good education. As Shasta pointed out it has a very good architecture program, it has a top clinical psych program, its law school is consistently ranked among the best in Texas, and it is one of three Tier 1 research universities in Texas (orange and maroon being the two others). It is a long way past being Cougar High. FWIW, I don't have a dog in this hunt. Although I've lived in Houston since Lewis Cutrer was mayor, I didn't go to any of the schools y'all are scrapping about.
