  1. i can't find that particular rendering at the memorial hermann website. the building is grotesque. i hope they tone it down. it looks like another opportunity for quality architecture bites the dust.
  2. it was also 96 degrees today during the afternoon when these were taken. the families are at the pools, the movies, the mall or at home in the AC.
  3. here's a couple more. anadarko tower 1 waterway view 1 waterway view 2 waterway avenue. buildings left to right: 21 waterway avenue (churrasco's on retail level/the goose's acre pub on waterway level), 25 waterway avenue (new street front retail), tinseltown.
  4. i ran over and took some pictures. a park in east shore a house on georgian drive east shore brownstones 1 east shore brownstones 2 east shore brownstones 3 east shore drive 1 east shore drive 2 charleston park 1 charleston park 2
  5. if you look at the website, notice the names: charleston park, colonial park, southern coastal. charleston park is classic american. colonial park is southern colonial. the homes along east shore drive will be american coastal styles with spanish, french and english influences. if you haven't checked out the interactive map of east shore, you should. it details the home styles. the east shore website also offers links to websites of each builder. some of the builders' web pages offer renderings and floor plans. also, the streets of east shore are lined with oak trees. it is by no means "treeless". it is a more formal setting.
  6. niche, do you really think the purposed redevelopment of the astrodome is "forward-thinking"? it seems mediocre at best (imo).
  7. although i would like to see something architecturally significant occur with the reuse of the astrodome, i can't see anyone financing a groundbreaking project. if they go ahead with the theme-based hotel, it will be because it has worked in other cities (nashville, orlando, etc.). unfortunately, it appears we can look forward to multi-storied parking garages surrounding a cheesy domed convention center hotel. i think i may prefer that the dome be imploded so that it remains, at least, a fond memory.
  8. if the quality of life/property value issues are less of a burden to afton oaks than the other neighborhoods mentioned by IHB2; then, is it not true, that a direct line down richmond becomes the lesser of two evils?
  9. U2 - Joshua Tree Tour at The Summit The Cure - Disentigration at The Pavilion Meat Beat Manifest and Loop Guru at Numbers Depeche Mode - Music For The Masses at Astroworld Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion at Compaq Center (both nights) Depeche Mode - Violater (I don't remember if this was at The Pavilion or Compaq.) Depeche Mode - Exciter Tour at The Pavilion k.d.lang at Verizon k.d.lang with the Houston Sympony at Jones Hall
  10. i like la carafe, but i don't think it would be an enjoyable place to visit with a party of more than 4 or 6 people. some of the vietnamese restaurants in midtown are great for informal gatherings, especially in mid afternoon. also, for a smaller group, a lounge like zimm's or prive have comfortable areas to kick back and visit. also, scott gertner or "wyattearp" might like to facilitate a gathering for us, being that they have establishments many of us are interested in or concerned about.
  11. maybe my idea of good design is very narrow. i loathe most new construction. i do not consider townhomes replicated a thousand times to be good design, simply profitable. new million dollar homes in the woodlands generally make me ill, for instance. you walk in and they have the same crappy bannister that a 100k perry townhome has. the same black granite counter tops, the same trim, the same, the same , the same, the same. i didn't mean to be critical of your views.
  12. south park mozart or beethoven?
  13. i'm all for the grand parkway taking traffic away from woodlands parkway. however, there is no need to slam our dearest pineda. i think that pineda's efforts are noble and well founded. i find pineda neither silly nor shortsighted.
  14. wasn't that the same place as "candy land" or "candy cane" park with the mini rides? i had a birthday there when i was five or six. we have some old film with that birthday party on it.
  15. people who love good architecture/design want to be near it. simply because one has to live within his/her means does not mean that they disregard architecture. i would rather have a view of the downtown skyline from my living room and live in a mediocre townhome i could afford. that's just me. someone else might prefer a better floor plan with better amenities and face another townhome. i think it's a stretch to assume that someone lacks taste in architecture because of their home purchase. a home purchase involves more than liking the design. if this were true i would have never settled on a home. interesting, thoughtful design is rare, with the exception of hiring one's own architect. the majority of "custom" homes, townhomes and even historic homes (many are old school cookie cutter homes) are regurgitated builder's bilge. one must tolerate this blandness and focus on location, finances, number of rooms needed and convenience. to single out townhomes is narrow minded at best.
  16. wait...so, the job description is: promote houston, make the way clear for big parties, entertain party planners and then party with all of them. i'm so in. where do i sign up! personally, i think we could do better than jordy tollett; he was not opposed to the ugly neon aquarium downtown, nor the neon tower that was almost built on our front doorstep; also, he comes across as a used car salesman. i do not trust car salesmen of any kind. (that's sarcasm, i did not just jump the logic train.) i think we needed mr. tollett for the period he has served; however, i think it's time to upgrade. trade him in.
  17. yes, i have. i purchased it at borders for $35, i think. the book details george mitchell's story, the HUD experience, land acquisition, planning and the environment...........and that's just part 1. it (the book) covers everything from the inception of interfaith, a commitment to public art to the sale of the woodlands and "lessons learned". if you like development or are intrigued by the woodlands, it's a must read.
  18. Mixers, Elixirs and IMAX link to houston press tidbit smart singles scene
  19. welcome to the forum scottskybar. it's great to have you aboard. thanks for the scoop as well. we get kinda fiend for new towers around here, but then worry when it sounds as if a building or business we like will be displaced. keep us posted.
