  2. Wine Week offers more events and wine By CHEVALIER MAYES, Villager staff05/31/2006 Whether it's a $15 bottle of wine meant to wash down a frozen dinner, or a $100 bottle of wine to be sipped over steak and lobster, Clifton and Constance McDerby, the creators of Wine Week in The Woodlands, have made the event into something meant for all to enjoy. "The purpose, as far as the attendees go, is to have an event for everybody," Clifton McDerby said. "A lot of wine events are intimidating, but we want to make it approachable for anyone wanting to give it a try or wanting to broaden their wine experience. We will have attractions that will interest experienced wine drinkers." In only a year's time, Wine Week has made a huge splash in The Woodlands, across Texas and in the U.S. The format of Wine Week involves a large number of wine-related events spread out over a period of about a week. Last year Clifton said Wine Week included 24 events over six days, and this year will be bigger and better with 43 events from June 19-25. full story

  10. i'm not sure about "comic". maybe "ironic". irony - if rapper, ice cube, fell through ice while vacationing in canada and froze to death. comic might be..........i was driving in katy and saw 50 cent walking down the road with his posse, then i turned the corner and there he was again. after about the third 50 cent and his posse i realized that there was some kinda "urban" thang going on the burbs. it might be ironic (to some) that urban styles are in the burbs. you should see some of these white boys trying to look urban. now that's irony.
  11. all that convention space in big d. god forbid that they say no to a convention the week of a disaster. they might have to refund some money. i have a friend who is a nurse in ft. worth. she couldn't find anywhere to volunteer in dallas during the katrina aftermath. the hospital connections she had in ft. worth and dallas had no idea where to begin. they didn't know who was doing volunteer organization in dallas. they weren't organizing groups to come to houston/anywhere/the astrodome as far as they knew. i'm not saying there were no volunteers from dallas. it seems there was little concern from the top down in some organizations. i called memorial hermann in the woodlands who gave me a contact name and number in the medical center of someone organizing volunteers. by the time i finished taking down the number, my nurse friend had already located an 800 number for astrodome volunteers by calling random hospitals in the houston area. i think houston was able to respond rapidly, not only from the leadership of our mayor, but from our wonderful medical center and its community. once we were told where to go and what would be needed, and what would occur. anyone of good will could contribute. other cities would be wise to follow this precedent. dallas may not only lack the will, but the substance.
  12. i think if public schools are a priority you might want to consider certain areas of the klein school district and the woodlands to the north. the commute can be 45 minutes to downtown and that is if you live in close proximity to the hardy toll road. pineda or mrfootball may know the zip codes near the better klein schools as for the woodlands; 77380, 77381, 77382. remember that some areas of the woodlands are a 15-20 minute drive from the hardy toll road. a commute, for instance, from the village of alden bridge (pleasantville) to downtown houston can be over an hour during peak traffic times. a commute to downtown houston from the village of grogan's mill during peak times can be 35-45 minutes. some may disagree with my calculations. the inner loop neighborhoods offer easy access, on most days, to anything central. especially, when you learn alternate routes. the woodlands offers many activities for children, those wanting adult options are often felt left out. although this is changing, the woodlands is a family oriented development. over thirty percent of the woodlands population (pop. around 80k) is under 18. there are sports camps, science camps, math camps, workshops, festivals, a children's museum, children's concerts, village activities, HOA activities, over 100 parks w/various age specific play areas, some of the best private schools in the houston area, the us olympic diving team trains here...........the point being; there are 100s of easily accessible programs from myriad organizations for you and your children in close proximity to your home. inside the loop, these type of activities exist; however, not in such a close, accessible (IMO) environment. it's too bad you're not sure where your husband will be commuting to or from. if he is based in the woodlands and you purchased inside or around the loop, a reverse commute wouldn't be so bad. houston is REALLY spread out. if you will not know where your husband will be based in the houston area, perhaps a short term rental would allow you the opportunity to get to know where things are and where you want to be? and about longevity, a significant percentage of home buyers in the woodlands are people who are moving "within" the woodlands. there are families who have been here from the inception of the woodlands in the early 70's, purchased their first "starter" home, moved into a larger house as they had kids and as empty nesters are downsizing into townhomes, patio homes and condos. this is a great place to "easily" put down some roots if you are so inclined. welcome to houston!
  13. metro has mentioned commuter rail from 290 terminating at the hardy rail yard redevelopment/transit center. would this configuration involve using the ROW mentioned in this thread? it might be something to look into or look out for. May 31, 2006, 12:11AM Metro pursues land for plan to connect rail and bus lines Transit board votes to negotiate a deal for 9 acres in Hardy rail yard By RAD SALLEE Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle Metro authorities are ready to make a deal with Union Pacific for property just north of downtown, hoping to turn a portion of its sprawling rail yard into a central station for Metro buses and trains. The Metropolitan Transit Authority board Tuesday voted to have staff negotiate the purchase of nine acres of the railroad's Hardy Yard, bordered roughly by Main to the west, Elysian to the east, Burnett to the North and Lyons and Conti to the south. ......... Metro's long-term plans also call for a commuter rail line from U.S. 290 and northwest Houston that could terminate at the site, he said. full story

  15. 16. May 30, 2006, 11:52AM New sports site planned for The Woodlands Complex targets range of athletes with facilities, coaching, training By KIMBERLY STAUFFER Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle Nine local physicians and a retired major league baseball player recently broke ground on a 15-acre sports complex in South County that will cater to youth, high school, collegiate and professional athletes. Legends Sports Complex at 602 Pruitt Road in Spring has been 18 months in the making. A family-oriented facility, owners Dr. Rick Mora of The Woodlands and Chad Fox, former professional baseball player, designed the complex with the help of consultants after researching centers in Texas and nationwide. Initially planned as a 30,000- to 50,000-square-foot baseball academy, Mora said he wanted to focus on adding amenities other Houston facilities lacked, such as adequate seating and food. After visiting Champion Sports Center in Orlando, Fla., a fully equipped sports facility providing an in-house restaurant, professional coaches and training for volleyball, basketball, baseball, football and other sports, "We walked out of there saying, 'We can do more than just a baseball academy,' " Mora said. ''We found the demographics and need in the community that could sustain a facility here in The Woodlands." The 96,000-square-foot Legends Sports Complex will feature multiple indoor and outdoor fields for baseball, football, lacrosse and soccer. Four full size basketball courts and eight volleyball courts. There will be an indoor turf field for football and other sports, plus an outdoor track. Six automated batting cages and 12 pitching and batting tunnels are included in the facility design. full story
  17. def con 1 through 5 determined how close we were to world war three during the cold war, at least in the movie "war games" with mathew broderick. i'm not sure if that was actual military terminology or not. it may have been short for defensive condition?
  18. my parents stayed at the magnolia last august for their anniversary and had a great time, i told the reservations desk that it was a special occasion. on the other hand, i know a couple who came down from vermont to stay for a few days and did not enjoy the magnolia since august, they moved to the four seasons and were very pleased there. in addition, my parents stayed at the four seasons since renovations were made and didn't want to leave. they also received great service at the four seasons.
  19. i wish they would paint the freeway support columns, at least.
