  1. "town center" is the area i described above. like grogan's mill and research forest, the woodlands' town center is a specific development area. market street is within the "town center" improvement district (TCID).
  2. "town center" encompasses the mall, market street, the riverway, etc. its borders are i-45 on the east, lake woodlands on the west, woodlands parkway on the south and (i think) lake front circle on the north. also, the population of the woodlands is closer to 90% white (unfortunate imho, but a better percentage than formerly mentioned). next time you visit the woodlands, start out at the homefinder center. it is right off of woodlands parkway, westbound, before you get to grogan's mill. they have huge models of the development and town center and free maps.
  3. conroe did something similar to this for it's downtown area several years ago. it seems to have been a success.
  4. i read that george mitchell had intended for the woodlands to be not only economically diverse but racially diverse. he was quoted during the woodlands' 30th anniversary saying that we had a long way to go in the area of racial diversity.
  5. the problem with your examples of miami and pittsburgh is that these locations have geography that we lack; they are both on large bodies of water. we can't compete with those locales with the exception of the buffalo bayou master plan. houston is unique in it's geography and to look to these other types of developments is to ask houston to be something it isn't. i agree it's important to contrast and compare; however, urban planning and transportation systems of cities larger than houston would better serve our focus than simply great/pretty developments that we are not likely to reproduce because of our location and levels of tourism.
  6. the richmond strip is dead. maybe the thread should be renamed "alternative 80s club music in houston"? IMHO, the large plots of land along richmond that were once home to restaurants, clubs and ice houses will be a great opportunity for the development of lower price point housing in close proximity to uptown. as far as ever being what it was, i think not. there is too much interest in entertainment districts elsewhere.
  7. star pizza is great....sometimes. ditto on the california pizza for gourmet pizzas. love that thai chicken.
  8. i have never had an item i enjoyed at a thai restaurant. i've eaten at thai pepper/alabama, nit noi/rice village and nit noi/1960 west. i've had pad thai, noodles, shrimp, spring rolls. it never seems to have a certain something. is there something i'm missing about the thai experience. i really can't find anything fascinating about the food. any suggestions thai food lovers?
  9. no, crescent no longer has interest in the woodlands. morgan stanley owns the majority of the remaining interest.
  10. The Rouse Company bought out Crescent in January of 2004. bizjournals article
  11. Urban Retreat Coming to The Woodlands by The Woodlands Development Company Urban Retreat, one of the leading day spas in Texas with three locations in The Galleria area, has leased 7,500 square feet of space on the lower level of The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel for its first suburban location. Construction of the new spa has begun, with an estimated opening date of October, 2005. Personal services will include complete hair design services and an
  12. i don't dislike san antonio; however, each time i visit i'd rather be somewhere else. also, the downtown area smells bad.
  13. me too. fisher elementary PISD, 1972. moved to conroe after that.
  14. it looks like a unicorn's horn. however, it is elegant and graceful (as one would expect for calatrava). too bad houston is not considering buildings as significant as this will/would be.
  15. there is a construction fence around the property and a for sale sign describing the acreage only.
  16. i think the ultimate goal is that the waterway be the "main street" of the woodlands town center. the transition to this will not be easy on shoppers.
  17. as much as i'm proud of the woodlands "highlander" and now "cavalier" heritage...i wish we had still smaller schools. it is too easy to fall through the cracks with 2400 students.
  18. word is, it's delayed. i had hoped that someone would have some idea about when these will come online.
  19. the principal, who guided our tour, did say that starbucks may be available to the students at some point (but not from the water fountains). chick fil a and quiznos will also be available.
  20. back on topic....... katydidit, have you had any progress with the water pressure problem? do your neighbors have the same problem. has your community association been able to assist you?
  21. we toured college park high school this last week. it's amazing what they can do with 54 million dollars and 350,000 square feet. the theatre/arts departments and science labs are better than some university facilities. state of the art. there are also security cameras throughout the hallways and stairwells, and the teachers' id badges will be also security cards that give time and date records of every locked exterior door they enter or exit. there are noise reduction panels throughout all of the major public areas. it is very well thought out. we're very excited to have it in our community.
  22. not nice welcome to the forum. please read standards of conduct for our beloved forum and refrain from saying things that may distract a thread or begin an argument.
  23. on the subject of home size: i had a 900 square foot 2-1 for several years and a very hyper weimeraner. moving to a 1900 square foot home with large living areas and wide stairs has been great for both me and the dog. i guess if someone is living alone with no pets (or small ones) a small house is great, but you add a significant other, a kid and pets (especially large ones) then you need more. yes, size matters.
