  1. Genetic research for several applications. One treatment I heard they were working on several years back was a patch that allowed the body to absorb genetic material.
  2. THE WOODLANDS - Lexicon Genetics Inc., of The Woodlands, has entered into a partnership with Texas A&M University that will produce 1,700 new jobs in The Woodlands over the next decade. Gov. Rick Perry announced the agreement, which will create the nonprofit Texas Institute for Genomic Medicine, during a press conference Saturday in Houston. Perry also announced that the Texas Enterprise Fund, which is a $295 million fund that was set aside by the Legislature last year to help attract businesses and jobs to Texas, would provide a $50 million grant for the project. The partnership contract calls for the creation of 5,000 new jobs in Texas, including 1,700 in The Woodlands, over the next 10 years. Link to rest of story.
  3. i hear chirping at night in the woodlands as well. it makes me think that sun is about to come up and it turns out to be 3AM, then the dog wants to go out. darn forest creatures. actually, my first thought was an AC fan motor. a guy i work with says that some frogs chirp.
  4. if the woodlands is a suburb prison, then the walls are forested buffers. sentence me to life without parole.
  5. i'm not saying that i'm for restricted property rights. i'm simply stating that sprawl may never end.
  6. our conflict is that we have personal property rights written into the constitution. as long as we have liberal property ownership instituted into our culture, sprawl will increase beyond anything known to civilized society. we must change the mindset of the property owners or the mindset of what it means to be a republic. the city on a hill will become the largest developed land mass known to mankind otherwise.

  11. next cause........stop volcanic eruptions!!!!
  12. the area is getting denser. i think that many of these new neighborhoods will become ghettos with big houses, not because of who is buying the homes but because many of these homes are being bought by investors to rent, and many of the new home owners cannot afford the notes they are signing and will abandon these houses, and the homes are being cheaply built. IMHO, i believe that the homebuilders who are building thousands of homes in close proximity to the hardy toll road near 1960/richey are targeting low income and minority buyers. it appears that many who are buying these homes can barely afford them. by that i mean that there are sheets hanging in many windows of homes that have been there for over a year and sparsely furnished homes. it is my fear that these builders are capitalizing on available financing and helping people look like good loan prospects. before someone jumps on me, let me be specific. i do not intend to say that low income and minority go hand in hand. i believe these builders are taking advantage of members of the buying public who are first time home buyers who may or may not have had good counsel in personal finance and/or home buying. it's a disaster waiting to happen. now that i've unloaded my cynical take, let me be positive. it is possible that a growing number of the low income and/or minority population is coming into the middle class with a vengeance. although these builders may be building sub-quality housing, they are offering a new home to persons who may have never thought they could own one. regardless of the substandard housing, a neighborhood full of proud homeowners does not a ghetto make.
  13. there is an enormous amount of infill housing being built south of 1960, west of aldine-westfield, east of 249 and north of beltway 8. most of the housing i've seen is under 150k. i think that any redevelopment of greenspoint will reflect the demographics of these homeowners.
  14. congrats danax and ssullivan. i'm happy to have you as members of our esteemed group of moderators.
  15. two words: availability and convenience.
  16. a recent article in "w" (i think) showed that people who shop at places like neiman marcus are just as likely to shop at walmart too. there will be more mixes like the target at memorial city mall in the future.
  17. i heard that if bass pro shops is putting a location at greenspoint, then the people behind katy mills could be responsible for redevelopment. i don't know how much truth there is to this. does anyone know if bass pro shops is somehow linked to that developer?
  18. does anyone remember the discussions on haif in our old format when these issues started to broil? we discussed, at length, the shoddy construction of homes and off hands approach to building that companies such as perry homes were producing? one item that seems to be missing from all these it's about time articles above is the looming disaster coming from fraudulent lending practices. is it not the way that financing is awarded to these builders that is part of the problem and then, subsequently, the builder hired agents who "help" potential homeowners gain financing? i have a friend who was selling lofts in charlotte, nc. a few years back. he told me that as long as these builders were bringing in buyers who could get financed, they (the builder) would continue to get money for development. the result of this is a determination to get people financed and a rush to develop. these builders will be building out for months even after the market is oversaturated (if it isn't already). although my knowledge on this is from anecdotal evidence, perhaps some of our readers will have more knowledge of financing for builders and then the builder's determination to gain financing for the potential homeowner?
  19. ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-HOUSEMAN! etomipro is a file sharing software i stumbled across lately. now, i don't exactly approve of this type of file sharing; however, music that is out of print.....is another story. considering the direction of this thread i thought it necessary to let you whose ears still bleed, and those who would know groups/artists like nitzer ebb, gene loves jezebel, peter murphy, etc. that a search on etomipro for "razormaid" brings up hundreds of club mixes from that time. do not start this unless you have some time to kill. unfortunately, i discovered this treasure chest of 80's club music on a work night and had to rip myself away from my pc in the wee hours while still downloading 30 or 40 more songs. the richmond strip is dead, but the music is forever!!!!
  20. iluvdogs, here is a link you might like (if you haven't discovered it already). http://www.houston-guide.com/
  21. "I see the sham-where's the rock?" - frank lloyd wright you gotta love that old iconoclast (FLW). that's a great quote.
  22. we used to chase off richmond strip club types who wandered in to numbers and power tools. when we saw a pair of z cavarricci's we knew where they were from. we made "no z cavarricci" t-shirts to show our disdain. those were the days.
  23. i went to the strip once and never returned. when restaurants like fat tuesdays couldn't survive, it was apparent that the money coming to the area was not being spent on food. it felt more dangerous than lower westheimer in the early eighties.
