  5. my cuz emailed these pics this week. i thought some of you haifers might enjoy them. there are more in the gallery if you like these. was the whole country freeway happy in the 60s? and those darn feeder roads.....economically good, but i wonder if the designers had any idea of the miles and miles of ugly strip centers we would have today?
  6. http://www.montroseblvd.org/index.html start by redeveloping the montrose corridor between allen parkway & hermann park. create an architectural committee to curtail unsympathetic and banal townhome construction in the area. give tax incentives to upgrade aging apartment complexes that offer low "artist/student" rates. bring back the unruly, semi-anarchistic westheimer street fest and have the city subsidize it. have numbers nightclub recognized as the progressive music institution that it is. have the city or convention bureau create an ad campaign that invites you to "brunch in the montrose". and, last but not least, fix the sidewalks.
  7. yes 'tis all i know. but the names tweety dropped were impressive. she hasn't been wrong yet, but there is always a first time. i hoped for a confirmation from haif insiders. time will tell.
  8. does brady's landing have a worthwhile view? http://www.bradyslandingrestaurant.com/
  9. i've yet to experience smells from the port of houston that i could describe as positive or perversely enjoyable. eww. LOL
  10. this topic was inspired by a comment theniche made in another thread: "If not the oz-like nightscape, then what is it? The billowing, streaming clouds of steam eminating forcefully from the stacks? The occasional flare that lights up the night sky in a massive fireball for hours on end? The pointy steel spires that frame the San Jac Monument? The petrochemical complex, IMO, is itself a form of architecture that is Houston's very own. No other major city has what we have, and what we have is beautiful. Regardless of your view on petrochemicals, pollution, symbolism, or whatnot, looking at them just kicks total ass." personally, i'm struck by the intricate structures surrounded and connected by pipes and valves, and machinations i have no idea what purpose they serve. sunrises and sunsets can be ethereal through the haze; there are colors i do not see in the woodlands. ultimately, i'm giddy at the amount of production and manpower, and technology, and shipping all occurring simultaneously. stink and health risks aside, there is much to appreciate about the port of houston esthetically and economically. any other fans?
  11. i expressed disbelief when the little bird said ritz carlton, but tweety mentioned confirmation from two sources on both sides of the, uhh, development. anyone hear any rumblings that they can confirm or not deny? also, crush (wine lounge) and sirenuse euro bistro are in the works. sirenuse is somehow related to the folks that brought us goose's acre. the viking cooking school in the new hubbell & hudson market & bistro will be the only houston location. registration is available at viking cooking school. one more rumor is that hubbell & hudson bought all three black walnut locations to shore up the finances for the new market & bistro at 24 waterway. something about an upscale hawaiian restaurant too. fun fun.
  12. isn't the drinking age attached to millions of dollars in federal highway funds? drinking was legal for me when i was 19, but while i was 20, texas upped the drinking age to 21 because the feds were going to reduce highway funds if they didn't comply (or something like that). i agree that drinking responsibly should be taught during teenage years. unfortunately, irresponsibility will not disappear because of lowering the drinking age. in the current "anti teen drinking" climate we are in, parents who attempt to teach responsible drinking are frowned upon publicly.
  13. ahem! cough, cough! i don't think red's comment is egocentric. maybe jaded......
  14. i wonder how this article will contrast with the recent article on the growth in fort bend? i may have read the article on growth in fort bend in the saturday chronicle. it seemed to contradict the article in the villager. i wonder if the difference has to do with county population totals. anyone see both articles?
  15. this thread is getting out of hand. i hate to see the dogpile by the usual suspects. doesn't matter whether nucklehead is right or wrong (regardless of who he/she may be), civility is necessary. if you don't like what's being said, or have anything constructive to add to the discussion, check out other threads please.
  16. play nice guys. i think musicman was poking fun at the screen name rather than a personal attack. frankly, i'm quite jealous of museum tower and would love to see that kind of tower in houston. i hope it gets built one way or the other. it's a beautiful design. on the topic at hand, i'm no longer familiar with dallas' transit situation.
  17. I have a 2-1-1 in Cypress Trails of Timberlane in Spring, TX. I've had the best tenants for the last five years. They are moving on next month and I'm presented with an opportunity to sell or lease again. I'd like input from the HAIF community. The property will bring 250-300 a month positive cash flow; however, I have over 20K equity I'd like to use to reduce debt and buy a new AC system for my current residence. I'm not sure, in this market, whether I should hold on to it for awhile longer and delay current needs or sell and be a bit more comfortable. I look forward to your responses.
  18. great article. you've answered every single question that has occurred to me about the smart signals. as far as the system not working at night, i'm not so sure. i've pulled up to an intersection where my light just turned red. i was the only car at the intersection. the light immediately turned back to green as i came to a stop. this has occurred several times.
