  1. i would love, more than anything, to get off "the grid". anyone notice the huge, propeller looking things heading up I-45 on a regular basis? those babies are for wind farms in central texas. alternative forms of energy are gaining ground in many sectors. my opinion is that even energy companies are interested in cleaner (profitable) forms of energy. everyone has kids and grandkids. no one really wants a polluted planet. global warming or not, people want less "ugly" types of energy.
  2. join the party "silent intelligencia"! we know you are watching. we want you to participate. be one of us!
  3. people have opinions. haif is about houston. most of us have love for the built environment. disagreement on the what's what of houston is what it's all about. if we all were in agreement it would be no fun. it is only by discourse that we refine what it is to be who we are. haif is disagreement. haif is discourse. haif is insight. to be offended or off-put by argument is to be simple-minded. don't belittle the site because there is disagreement. it is what it is.
  4. the embassy suites is not five star, right? this hotel is in addition to the embassy suites?
  5. she has consistently had 45-50% negatives in polling that asked who you "definitely would not vote for". she's having a grand time in the press because the press likes her. i have yet to meet a republican woman who likes her, but i'm in texas. she may as well have horns and a pitchfork around here. she could not win texas, i'm certain of that.
  6. the only way that clinton will win is if a third party candidate splits the republican vote. she is too despised in republican circles. if she is the democratic nominee, it will mobilize the republican base, regardless of whose running on their side.
  7. he's around. he was online last night.
  8. i dread the next election. i'll get to vote for the person i dislike the least. at this point, i can't see how a republican or a democrat will make me happy. at least i can find comfort in the idea that none of the senators are likely to be prez.
  9. i think it depends on your browser. i use firefox as do a large percentage of haifers. everything seems to work as intended with firefox.
  10. "Foolish is butter bars....."? huh.........LOL. i've never heard that expression.
  11. lot cleared across waterway plaza from 24 waterway avenue. nothing officially announced, could be hotel or residential tower.
  12. the land is cleared now. wonder how long until crane(s) go up?
  13. Dog Day: Mutt Strutt walk to benefit Humane Society By: DEBORAH ROWE, drowe@hcnonline.com 10/03/2007 Pet owners and their dogs will be out in full force for the upcoming Mutt Strutt and Dog Day Afternoon. The Montgomery County Humane Society's 13th annual one-mile pledge walk will be held from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at Town Green Park, rain or shine. The pledge walk is followed by a day of fun and games, pet adoptions, artwork, food and drinks, entertainment and demonstrations. "They have changed venues several times," said Skeeter Hubert, event chairman. "Last year they moved it to Town Green Park. It has done well each year." Proceeds from the event traditionally go toward supporting the nonprofit humane society initiatives that include shelter, care, adoptions, spay/neuter programs and community education for pets. Funds generated at this year's event will be used by the humane society to build a new facility, pay operation expenses and help generate interest in animal adoption, Hubert said. more info

Town Center Theatre to debut off-Broadway show 'Sylvia' By: JAKE MUONIO, jmuonio@hcnonline.com 10/11/2007 The final production of the year for the Town Center Theatre is set, as "Sylvia" begins Friday. The show follows the story of a man, Greg, who comes across a dog, Sylvia, while out for a walk in the park. The man, 20 years into a marriage and with his children having recently all left the house, decides to bring the dog home and adopt it. Sylvia becomes an issue of contention between Greg and his wife Kate, who was looking forward to an empty house so she could spend more time with her husband. The play follows a series of events that result in Sylvia becoming a part of the family. "It's a very honest and sweet portrayal of the relationship between the man and his dog, and his wife," said Chris Tennison, artistic director for Town Center Theatre. "The play is the journey of Kate and Greg to find out what their lives mean after the kids have gone to school. It's something everybody in their 40s and 50s can understand, the feeling of, 'OK, what's next?' " more info

  16. some states have weak governors and some strong.
  17. Giuliani isn't a Senator, nor is he a governor. Richardson isn't the only non-Senator.
  18. i remembered somewhere that senators rarely become president. david broder in a 2002 column explains why. if applying these parameters to our current election, it narrows the field quite a bit. Why Few Senators Become Presidents By David S. Broder Sunday, June 23, 2002; Page B07 Once again the Senate is full of presidential wannabes. Three Democrats, John Edwards of North Carolina, John Kerry of Massachusetts and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, are out most weekends, cultivating friends in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina and wooing contributors everywhere. Joseph Biden of Delaware and Christopher Dodd of Connecticut reportedly are weighing the possibility of joining the chase. And the boss man, Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota, has carefully left the door open for himself. In all of American history, only two men -- Warren Harding and John Kennedy -- have gone straight from the Senate to the White House. Bob Dole in 1996 was the last sitting senator to win a party nomination (though he resigned his Senate seat a few months before the convention) and, like most of his predecessors, he was whomped in the election. In 2000, two men who had spent most or all of their public careers as senators, Al Gore and Bill Bradley, and a sitting senator, John McCain, were in the race -- and all three lost. The statistics show that vice presidents (many of them, like Gore, former senators) and governors and former governors (such as George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter) have far greater success in winning nominations and in making it to the White House than do senators. full article
  19. i'm sure a PR department/company is on the case as we speak. there will be grand openings of each business as well as the development, advertisement, newsmedia and so on.
  20. i'm not what one would call "yuppie". perhaps looking like an ice house patron or saturday night bowler is the reason i get better service than most yuppie types that hit the acre. i've been attended to by the chef and the manager on more than one occasion. perhaps you have to become a regular. i'd say try it again.
  21. jones hall is classic. i would be adamantly opposed to tearing it down. k.d.lang with the houston symphony was amazing. i've enjoyed many events here. the event i enjoyed least was "the lion king". i do not think jones hall is a great place for shows of that magnitude. if the money in town should want a world class venue for the symphony, then by all means, put it where the downtown post office is. imo, this would be the perfect location for a piece of world class architecture.
