  1. i have to second that. i've eaten at frenchie's twice and was underwhelmed each time.
  2. i must confess, i've posted on several of the woodlands articles in the chronicle under the same screen name i use here. i can't see how it's "small town" to voice your take on an article. 'tis true that many of the posters seem really mad about everything. i like the opportunity to respond. i can't see how it's any different than voicing likes or dislike on HAIF.
  3. those "sidewalk cafe's" include thai stix, zimm's martini lounge and across the street is nippon sushi. i've missed one or two, but i've listed my three favorite places to be in that area. making montrose walkable will be a boon to the area. i've wished for this for quite awhile.
  4. Although I've never heard it called "The Broken Window Theory", it is the same concept that Rudy Giuliani utilized to clean up NYC while Mayor.
  5. I think what he is saying is that the retail will be jutting out in front of, or behind the garage structure. Currently, we have entire blocks of garages facing Main. A garage with retail facing Main will be a welcome sight. Am I missing something, or is H-Town?
  6. katiedidit, i'd give anything if my kid (the nephew) would commit to strenuous study. i can't get him to look at cliffnotes for crying out loud. he is sixteen with a car and he came with baggage. but, i do wish i had your problem, i think i'd relish it. not the failures of CISD mind you (i have those), but kids willing to do the work. i'm glad to hear your kids are getting back on track, but i digress. The Mencken quote makes me think of "neat" solution I've regurgitated for years on end. I need to put that quote in front of me before I go spouting off neat solutions when there are none. Is it too monumental to offer citizenship for every immigrant who has been here for more than a specific period, while considering each case individually? At the same time, overhaul immigration policy so that future immigrants have sufficient, swift consideration and opportunity. Part of the problem is that we do not have the administrative capacity to process everyone who is already here. Did I just regurgitate a neat solution that will fail. Probably so. The issue is bigger than anything Congress can "neatly" legislate. Maybe, there should be a grass roots, pro-immigration movement from citizens who see the value of legitimate immigration policy? We need to accelerate the processing of people who are already here and show more strength at the borders.
  7. I guess katiedidit hasn't been to the hospital or in a lab recently. Check the doctor roster at many of the major hospitals or research institutions. I don't know if they are legal or not, but they are here, in droves, in the medical and research community. Thank goodness. How many immigrant doctors has our family received care from in the last six months? Five out of ten. Cardiologists, primary care, sleep specialist, surgical and more. I don't mean to say that is the norm, but it is our experience. It would be devastating to the medical and research community to begin deporting these people. The article states that the majority of these immigrants come here legally and stay past legal status because the immigration system does not provide for their legalization. We invite them here because of their talents and education. Are we now going to send them home, after they have moved their families a world away and established much needed brain power in our communities? I think not. Our students are too busy getting wasted, spending thousands of dollars on homecoming dances (a recent pet peeve of mine) and avoiding AP classes. It is my opinion that the growing American underclass is mostly because of mediocre public education, and I cannot see things getting better. Get those Advanced Degrees kiddos, preferably in the Sciences or Engineering. Making under 36k a year is going to be the suck more and more. In the mean time, we need brain power, wherever it comes from.
  8. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this project. I'm happy the theme is being updated. I hope, HOPE, that it is done tastefully. It has the potential to be a big joke. Does anyone know who the architect or designers are? Please forgive, I haven't read this entire thread.

  20. very cool pictures. thanks. it reminds me of a daniel amos (christian alternative group) song called "it's the eighties, where's my rocket pack.". great fun. note: deleted duplicate posts.
  21. blockbuster is closing many locations around town. there was an article about it some time ago in the chronicle. personally, i'd like to the strip center demolished and a new development with storefronts pushed to the street; parking remaining in the back. that's practically cliche around here, i know. about the street kids/street people: a few of the people lurking around lower westheimer and the curve, in the late eighties early nineties, were my friends. i can't speak for the current group of misfits, but i like having them around.
  22. thanks guys. i look forward to it. red, sometimes when you piss me off, it makes me like you more. no worries.
  23. link here is a link to their business information. they may not have a website. you can call and find out who is responsible for the sale and chat them up. good luck.
  24. yes, great pictures. fun for us middle age guys too. i'll repeat my earlier opinion: "i think the building has potential. currently, it looks dingy and dark. it needs to be brightened up. the concrete needs to be cleaned or painted and the glass panels should be replaced. additionally, it could have soft, ambient light on the exterior, illuminating the dark spaces between each level. the crown needs work as well."
