  1. let's not forget almodovar's "law of desire" with a young antonio banderas and "tie me up, tie me down". other latin films i've enjoyed are "jamon, jamon", "belle epoque" and "like water for chocolate". just in case i haven't already, i must express my affection for the following: amelie city of lost children delicatessen pillow book eat, drink, man, woman au revoir, les enfants indochine europa, europa three colors: red three colors: blue three colors: white
  2. there is a rumor that waterway square in the woodlands will have a W hotel. i do not know if this means that the development company is courting W hotels or that W hotels are interested in placing one here.
  3. my dad went to work for the railroad here in houston when he was 16 (he was born in 1936). he worked on 982 during his apprenticeship.
  4. hey parrothead, i have some numbers for you. guess i should pm you.
  5. dude, sinatra and jobim? i had no idea.
  6. memorial hermann and st. luke's have excellent facilities here. both organizations are growing rapidly.
  7. interfaith is an integral part of the woodlands. the woodlands was created as a community, not a suburban bedroom wasteland. interfaith assumes that people want to be a part of the community at large. damn, this "leave me alone" attitude is what's wrong with just about every societal ill i can think of. so, giving to your community is offensive? do atheists and agnostics not want to contribute to community? you guys are beginning to sound like evangelicals who want to do it "only" their way, in their time and privately (read: i'll help my community when it suits me or my cause). again, do you get a mark on your forehead as "religious" because you want to draw the community together? if cute kids were going door to door for environmental reasons would you be so offended? i don't understand this hostility to a non-sectarian, pro-community activism. interfaith comes to your door to let you know that you are not alone (a good thing). there are opportunities to give if you have means and help if you need it. shiiza!
  8. i've been listening to my antonio carlos jobim cds recently. perfect, laid back, 90 degree free AC kinda music. bossa nova is way cool.
  9. c'mon the woodlands population and the nature of interfaith are totally related.
  10. if only i had some of that DNA. can it be conditioned or learned. parrothead, one of my nephew's teachers at college park high school is "on the case" for us. she emailed me today and said that she would be in the CISD administration offices tomorrow (monday) and would forward necessary information. i'm keeping my fingers crossed for good news. will let you know as soon as i hear back from her.
  11. ok, so interFAITH is not ANTI-religious and focuses on the "primary directive" of local churches.......helping others. they weren't there to harass, impose or manipulate, but to promote community. interfaith is quite ambiguous about "religious" issues with the exception of loving your neighbor. if loving your neighbor and wanting to create a good community is religious, then with all my disdain for most churches, i too am religious. and, if you feel that loving your neighbor as yourself is to drink the koolaid? i'm in line. my personal opinion on interfaith is that it is a secular attempt to mobilize the grass roots community that is local churches (without dogma or proselytizing). to couple interfaith with door to door "moonies" or evangelicals is misleading and knee jerk.
  12. the woodlands comprises over 27,000 acres. it is easy to spend hours driving around. most of the over 100 parks in the woodlands are very well used. walkers, joggers, bikers, rollerblading, fishing, dog parks, pavilions, nature preserves, athletic fields abound. also, most of the parks are not visible from the main streets. if you are interested in seeing the parks, identify one or two and map them out. town green park is in town center and is atypical of most parks in the woodlands. when you exit at woodlands parkway off of i-45N there is a homefinder center on the right, less than a mile west. the center contains a model of the entire master planned community. if you head further west (turn right) from the parking lot of the homefinder center, you'll cross lake woodlands. the further west you drive the newer the neighborhood. there are homes from 100K to over 1 million in every village. every village has retail, schools, religious institutions and most have income and/or age restricted communities. when you are at the homefinder center you are on the southern edge of town center. head over to the waterway or market street for food and/or a stroll. if you decide to wonder in the neighborhoods/villages, make sure you have a map from the homefinder center. i've lived in the woodlands for four years and lived near the woodlands for most of my life. i still discover neighborhoods and parks i was not aware of. property near i-45 (the older neighborhood of grogan's mill, the new development of east shore and waterway residences) are appreciating faster than neighborhoods further back in the woodlands. i'm partial to grogan's mill; however, at your price range (for new construction) you could consider east shore, sterling ridge or the newest village of creekside park. i am a professed woodlands geek. feel free to IM if you have more questions.
  13. i you red. you remind me of some of my drinking buddies.
  14. ..........but the restaurants in pearland. there is an average to below average mexican restaurant in every other strip center. both vietnamese restaurants i've been to are average. both chinese restaurants i've visited were abominable. and the traffic on 518 at 288 is a nightmare. kudos to discount tire though, those guys have really pulled through for me and sonic is consistently..........sonic.
  15. a second language should be required in public schools from elementary school. it is embarrassing that every russian student can speak english while few american students grasp a second language.
  16. interfaith does not have members like churches have members. churches are members of interfaith like businesses are members of the chamber of commerce. people are not members of interfaith. people volunteer in the community via interfaith, but you do not "join" interfaith as a member. they do not proselytize. is it "religious" to help your neighbor? the whole idea of interfaith is to bring people together of different backgrounds for common good without the needless bickering of religious peckadillos. so what if they went to "religious" leaders to get the ball rolling. who else is involved in the community at that level? who else can mobilize groups of people for the greater good? to be offended because a non-religious entity comes to your door to welcome you to the community is hysterical. the offense is the word "interfaith". ohhh, my faith is personal. so what! no one is trying to "save" you by welcoming you to the community. is the chamber of commerce religious because it doesn't carry advertisements for strip clubs?
  17. some people aren't aware that a bilingual school is not necessarily one catering to non-english speaking students. i observed a "bilingual" school in tulsa, ok several years ago. the english speaking children were taught all of their courses in spanish. when tested, their scores for english vocabulary and writing skills were years ahead of english only counterparts. and of course, the kids were completely bilingual by the first year.
  18. if your name was spelled wrong, it was probably the post office, your mortgage company or the hoa that screwed it up. interfaith's mailing list comes from things you have signed up for or who you pay bills to. you guys are way too sensitive. interfaith was the original "welcome wagon". they weren't soliciting! no one is a "member" of interfaith. your home sale is a public record available to linens and things, byrd automotive, lawyers, lenders and, yes, churches. interfaith's "material" is information on how to get involved in the community or resources for happenings in the community. it's no wonder katiedidit has never become a part of the woodlands if the first person to welcome her family was shunned! they weren't asking for money or inviting anyone to church. they were simply saying hello and here is what living in the woodlands is about. the interfaith "material" would have had information for camps, programs at the woodlands athletic center, opportunities to volunteer, places to go if you are in need and so on. for christ's sake!
  19. i think the galleria or allen parkway/memorial drive would be a more appropriate place for this building. near herman park or along almeda near mosaic would be better as well. i do not like the proposed location.
  20. food for thought......perhaps overthought. i like you already, strickn. critique some other buildings for us. k
