  1. From the Chron article: "He noted that the Chronicle's story quoted a deputy county clerk as saying employees might start carrying umbrellas to defend themselves." With grackles, there's sometimes another very good reason to carry an umbrella (and it's more along the lines of Mel Brooks than Alfred Hitchcock ) They congregate en masse in oak trees at dusk, and hold impromptu contests as to who can scream the loudest and poop the most. Often, it's difficult to choose a winner, as they're all quite successful at both.
  2. Read in the Chron that Brokeback finally finished in the top five movies last weekend. Oprah has the entire cast on her show today, and is devoting half an hour to the movie. With the Oscar buzz, I have a feeling that this movie's going to have a looong theatrical run.
  3. Well, "Hotel Cotton" sounds kind of Mary Vivian Pearce-ish (for you Pink Flamingos fans...)
  4. Please refresh our memories...what's the original name of this building? (and who the hell was Montagu?)
  5. I've seen smaller buildings imploded, in areas just as dense. Any ideas as to why they didn't go that route?
  6. Part of the blame must be placed on local television news, which fails to make these distinctions. It seems that everything happens "in Southwest Houston" or "in Northeast Houston". Very seldom are distinct neighborhoods mentioned. Whether this is through ignorance, laziness or a desire to appeal to the lowest common denominator is anyone's guess.
  7. Thread reopened. Report any violations of the above reminder to a moderator.
  8. Anyone know of a grocery store which stocks Nance's Sharp & Creamy Mustard? Kroger used to carry it, but can't find it now.... Also, looking for Jolt Cola and Zweigle's White Hots - and yes, I've tried Spec's.
  9. Ahh...so you don't Desire a Streetcar? You're in luck. We have a light rail system. Trolleys: • must be boarded by climbing steps - inconvenient for strollers, wheelchairs, bicycles and the handicapped. • requires passengers to pay fares while boarding, slowing the process. • has only one or two narrow entrance/exits, which accomodate only one passenger at a time. • pick up and discharge people in the street, unprotected from automotive traffic. • are of limited passenger capacity. Light rail: • same level as platform - passengers, shopping carts, bicycles, wheelchairs enter and exit smoothly. • passengers pay fares prior to boarding. • have several entrance/exits, each wide enough to allow two people to pass. • pick up and discharge passengers on a platform seperated from automotive traffic. • can be linked to double capacity during peak hours. And buses? With the exception of picking up and discharging people in the middle of the street, they possess all the disadvantages of a trolley. In addition, they're noisy, don't ride as smoothly, and are subject to swerving, which is uncomfortable (and sometimes dangerous) to standing passengers. So get out of your horseless carriage sometime, and give light rail a try.
  10. Now you've done it. I can't shake this nightmarish vision of downtown Houston buried beneath a tangle of elevated walkways; and they're crowded with obese tourists in air-conditioned, bubble-topped carts, like the one Amber von Tussle drove as Miss Auto Show 1963. And they're screaming at me: "HEY! WHICH WAY TO WALMART?" *shudder* Maybe it is time to close this thread....
  11. Wow. Can't believe I've never seen that before. It's beautiful. Terminal Tower in Cleveland is no slouch, either.
  12. ...or integrate it into the light rail system. WHEE!
  13. It cost less than $300 million. And yes, people would rather ride on a train than a bus. Isn't the point of public transportation to provide a service that people will actually use? Would those be the same Houstonians who voted for the train? Fortunately not all Houstonians' opinions are shaped by listening to AM talk radio. And is it just me, or is there something positively Freudian about this hatred of trains among certain sectors?
  14. There was an unconfirmed but persistant rumor about a 'relationship' between Perry and his (male) Sectretary of State.Link and another liink. Whether there's any truth behind it is, of course, none of my business. I'll leave peeking between other people's sheets to the Republicans. But it's fun to see their heads explode at the very idea.
  15. At least Perry wasn't reputedly having sex with other women during HIS marriage...
  16. What a great looking shower! ...although the light fixture might be problematic for the freakishly tall
  17. Imagine planting a house in which our grandchildren could live! Unfortunately, our culture doesn't promote such far-reaching selflessness.
  18. I wonder if or when there'll be another referendum to include the eastern suburbs into METRO's service area - or is the populance still adamently opposed to public transportation? And would it benefit METRO?
  19. So far as produce goes, I've found that Spec's often has better prices, selection and quality than Randall's. If Spec's started carrying meat and cat food, I'd probably skip going to Randall's altogether.
  20. Welcome to HAIF, Jimmy, and thanks for the info on Central Square. We'll keep an eye out for demolition permits. With both Central Square and Greyhound gone, that area is posed to take off.
  21. Thanks for the info. Houston's my real-life SimCity
  22. Are demolition permits online? If so, could you post a link?
