  1. If anything, LA looks like Houston. After all, we're the ones who invented breast implants.
  2. Haven't looked at the site in a couple of weeks - if it's open, has anyone eaten there yet?
  3. Um...that if even I know how to use MapQuest (2.13 miles), perhaps professionals should, too?
  4. You have a point. It might make the guys buying purses uncomfortable.
  5. If you must be a pansexual, try to find one with a non-stick coating. Believe me...I know.
  6. Innuendo? What are you implying?
  7. It's about a 3 minute walk from where I live to Main/Alabama, and I'm just fine with the medical building plan. It sure beats the vacant lot that's there now, and I assume that the people who will be employed there will want to eat lunch. I hope that it spurs more restaurants in the area; we could use them. I don't know what's going on at the old Day's Inn. Haven't noticed any ill effects on the neighborhood. re: Main/Wheel and METRO. How come getting from the Red Line to the 25 Richmond bus is so awkward? Typical Metro stupidity; no signs, and there's not a stop on Wheeler between Fannin and Main. This ought to be a seamless transition. Currently, you have to negotiate a vast wasteland to find the closest bus stop.
  8. You deserve better friends. Cheers, applause and a pat on the back. The sweat equity that people put into older houses is greatly appreciated; it gives me hope.
  9. I live about 100 yards from Spur 527, and am one of those people who freaked out when TXDOT proposed rebuilding it. Like many other people, I was sure that the cut-through traffic would destroy our residential neighborhood. Turns out we were wrong. Spur 527's closing increased traffic on W Alabama a bit, but not to the extent that they (we) feared; it makes me wonder why they didn't just rip that useless artery out and plant trees. The temporary exit on Main St. seems to serve the purpose of getting off 59 just fine. Spur 527 should never have been built to begin with; that it's being rebuilt is another sad example of too much money being thrown at freeways. Thank goodness that the original plan to connect it with the Pierce Elevated never materialized. Such a shame it exists at all.
  10. I'm a bit vague on my history here, so if anyone can help me out, please do. My understanding is that communities to the south and east of Houston decided against opting into METRO about 25 years ago (which is why you can't get a bus to Clear Lake, Pasadena, Deer Park, etc.). Wonder if there's any chance that this will change sometime in the future? or are the residents of these communities staunchly anti-public transportation? It would be nice if at least Clear Lake was included; Space Center Houston is a major tourist draw, but inaccessable except by automobile.
  11. Ah, but don't you see? The author is more enlightened, more insightful than we mere Houstonians. If all the screeds about Houston written by pompous 20-somethings were gathered together, it would make for a dandy bonfire. Sounds like the author is making the awkward transition from working part-time at a comic book store on Guadelupe (and that monthly check from Mom) to adult life. Sometimes I think Austin's leading export is morose, preachy slackers.
  12. Perhaps we need to define our terms. Mass transit's purpose is to move masses of people, irrespective of distance. By spurring dense economic development, there's the side benefit of revitalized neighborhoods, and shorter trips to shopping, work, entertainment, etc. Rapid transit's purpose is to move people long distances quickly. To assume that this is somehow a more desirable goal is a fallacy much beloved by anti-rail forces. There's no advantage in going further and faster for its own sake. Rapid transit offers an alternative to crowded freeways; mass transit, an alternative to crowded streets.
  13. Like, wow, dude, stop it...you're freakin' me out

  15. ah! CURSED! Wondered what that word was...
  16. cruse n. A small jar or pot for holding water, wine or oil. (had to look it up...)
  17. The fat lady's still eating a sandwich. She hasn't warmed up her vocal cords yet... Jeez, that Card's pitcher is one ugly bastard.
  18. Gee, ssullivan - wish I'd written that. Don't be surprised if Rep. DeLay's interest suddenly wanes on Nov. 3rd...
