  1. Today's posts have been unapproved. A reminder: Respectful discussions only. My-city-is-better-than-your-city flame wars are not permitted on HAIF. "He started it" is not a valid excuse. Both parties in a flame war may have their accounts suspended or terminated. Just walk away. Flames will be deleted without notice. Please report violations to a member of the moderating team, or to the Editor.
  2. Unless the Summer Olympics, the Presidential Election, the war in Iraq and Amy Winehouse's emergency room have been moved to Mockingbird Station, you may find the eyes of the nation otherwise occupied. Frankly, I've heard no mention of it outside of this forum. In fairness, the Pavillions isn't national news, either.
  3. The possibility of closing Wharton Elementary was brought up in March of this year (see HAIF post) There have been several mentions on HAIF of 'forgotten' cemeteries, many of which have subsequently been built over. Is this a phenomenon peculiar to Houston? It seems to me that most cities keep a tighter rein on their dead, and try to discourage them from cropping up in inconvenient places.
  4. I hear the trend now is stainless countertops and granite appliances.
  5. For those who have the patience, here's a link to the `Food, Conservation, and Security Energy Act of 2007-8, which deals with crop subsidies. "To provide for the continuation of agricultural programs through fiscal year 2012, and for other purposes."
  6. What can we expect, when we have the mentally deficient determining the fate of the mentally ill?
  7. I'm going to miss the peeling paint. The unrestored house had a unique "wow!" factor. Nearly everyone who saw it had the same urge to be its rescuer, as if it were a sort of architectural lost puppy. Anyone can repaint a house, but to have the audacity to maintain its threadbare elegance for such an extended period required an exceptional sensibility. After its restoration is complete, it will be a pretty house - and much less memorable.
  8. What is it about chili and barbeque that provoke such passionate opinions? Is it because of the meat? Vegetarians don't get riled up about tofu recipes. People can abuse it as they please without retaliation.
  9. Despite its density, The Galleria area isn't exactly a pedestrian's paradise. Narrow, unshaded sidewalks, acres of surface parking, extremely wide streets and heavy vehicular traffic are among the conditions one has to tolerate. How can any "walkabity score" be calculated without weighing all factors? On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a walkability score of D+.
  10. Maybe those who have so much food that they can afford to throw it at animals should have their Lone Star cards revoked.
  11. An even more challenging route is zig-zagging through the side streets west of Brazos and east of Taft. The interface between the out of kilter Downtown and Montrose street grids creates all sorts of weird, disorienting intersections. I've lived (and walked) in Houston for more than 25 years, and still sometimes get turned around when attempting to navigate those streets.
  12. You, sir (or ma'am) are correct. The above matches exactly my understanding of the movie. In addition: I think the bar the crew hung out at, on W. Gray, was still called Blythe Spirits at that time. (Clever name! The owner's name was Blythe; they sold spirits; and Blythe Spirits is the name of a Noel Coward play.)
  13. A fine distinction. Any energy source - save muscles - is suspect.
  14. And I agree; can't understand why I stay in Houston...except... Forbes tells me I'm OK...
  15. Chip, chip, chip.... And another piece of Montrose disappears.
  16. Were there? Seriously, it's difficult to quantify crime. You may be right, because there were a lot more gay-basher types in the streets back then. However, we now have a drug subculture which has made up the difference. It's a different class of muggers and victims.
  17. According to a recent Forbes magazine article, the Montrose is among America's most walkable neighborhoods(#10). I'll take that as a compliment, although its veracity is questionable; I see fewer pedestrians in Montrose now than I did 25 years ago.
  18. The Reality Bites house is located at 409 W Clay, (which is quite a ways from W. Alabama, but closer to the Heights.)
  19. Title has been corrected to reflect 'cutsie' spelling. Will they still be pandering to the biker wanna-be crowd? That might help reduce the parking squeeze. Otherwise, that parking lot to the east or valet seem to be the only viable options. And I agree about the tow trucks on weekends comment. That downhill exit from Spur 527 onto Elgin is already a perfect setup for head-on collisions.
  20. Good question! My previous experiences with Metro service to the Big Airport have involved long, bewildering sidetrips through Gunspoint apartment complexes. I wonder, how will the taxicab community be impacted?
