  1. There's a thread about the air raid siren downtown here. If you'd like to hear that unforgettable sound again, crank up your speakers and click here. Warning: Children, dogs and co-workers might freak out.
  2. Here, too. From the Houston Chronicle website: "I've been anticipating this for some time," said Ray Hill, consultant for a number of local adult bookstores. "The same justification has been used to reverse similar laws in other jurisdictions. As recently as last week a store was busted on Telephone Road. They confiscated dozens of items and carried the clerk off to jail." Full article Guess it's safer and more lucrative than messing with violent offenders.
  3. February 14, 2008: (AP) A federal appeals court has overturned a statute outlawing sex toy sales in Texas, one of the last states - all in the South - to retain such a ban. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Texas law making it illegal to sell or promote obscene devices, punishable by as many as two years in jail, violated the right to privacy guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. 4. There's also a billboard in supposedly deed-restricted Westmoreland (on Burlington, visable from Spur 527). Is it possible that deed restrictions had lapsed sometime in the past, and were reinstated?
  5. Here's a picture of one of its downtown locations; can't remember the exact address:
  6. Here's a shot of the Tower, prior to Hollywood Video altering the sign.
  7. Here's a shot of the Boobie Rock (with Mary's in the background) circa 1988.
  8. Created new thread for new topic "The Mix" - posts have been moved here.
  9. Opened new topic, moved above posts from existing thread.
  10. Changed title from 'killed' to 'struck'.
  11. IMO, doesn't go far enough. The current size of licence plate may have been adequate back in the early 20th century, when cars seldom exceeded 30 miles per hour. One might have had a fighting chance of actually reading the plate on a passing car, especially one with fewer characters. Maybe my eyes aren't the best in the world, but I'm hard pressed to get more than the first three or four characters on a passing car, even one travelling at the speed limit. Licence plates should be several times their current size, and designed not for vanity, but legibility (as is the case in many European countries.)
  12. Took the poll: Hillary (80%), followed by Obama (70%). Mitt was dead last. Anyone surprised?
  13. How extraordinary, considering that the building was constructed in 1910.
  14. Asked a friend who's involved with the ACLU, and she says the car is privately owned by someone active within that organization.
  15. From the CNN article: Hinckley spent 70 years working in the church and is considered the architect of its vast public relations network. He worked to defuse controversies over polygamy and to promote full inclusion of nonwhites. Mormons believe the president of the church is a living prophet and apostle. They considered his words divinely inspired, including his views on homosexuality and the role of men and women in the home. I've never quite understood how come the Lord could sometimes be in favor of monogomy and racial equality, other times, not so much. Nor am I clear on how someone can be more divinely inspired than anyone else. Are some of us less favored?
  16. No, we're on a new cycle. Heath was predeceased by Vampira and Suzanne Pleshette.
  17. I've seen this car around the Montrose for years. I'll check with one of my ACLU buddies and find of if it's their property.

    311 System

I've had several occasions to use the city's 311 system (if you're unfamiliar with how this system works, check out 311 Facts.) Most times I've received very good service. Trees were trimmed away from traffic signs, leaking water meters and sidewalks were repaired. Now I've run into a situation which seems to have stymied the 311 system. On the south side of Richmond Ave., just east of Montrose Blvd., the third tree from the corner had been hit by a car last October, partially uprooted, and left leaning over the sidewalk. Not only does this impair pedestrian traffic; if the tree isn't straightened it will eventually have to be replaced. I've reported this faithfully for several months, always noting names, report numbers, and times. The operator assures me that the problem has been resolved. Unfortunately, it hasn't. Repeated calls have resulted in a different, perfectly straight, healthy tree being staked up, for reasons possibly known in Heaven and further assurances that "the tree has been trimmed." (!) Any suggestions as to how I can relate that the problem still has not been fixed? I've even contacted my district councilperson, to no avail.
  19. Does this mean my "Louie, Don't Shoot!" t-shirt will increase in value?
  20. Shaming people sometimes works. Just be polite, and use words such as 'defecate' and 'feces'; it drives people nuts. Also, you might try rubbing it in the offending person's hair, making them literally what they already are figuratively.
