  1. On the Fannin Street side, there's a place near the main entrance where the stucco has flaked off, and the word COTTON can be seen inscribed just above window level.
  2. Just to be clear, it's 35 million being pumped. "The owners of downtown's Hyatt Regency Houston are pumping $35 million into the property for more meeting space, a new restaurant and guest room renovations. There will 960 rooms remodeled with wood furnishings and flat-panel TVs. On the sixth floor, 30 guest rooms will be retrofitted into nine meeting rooms and three boardrooms, adding to the hotel's 64,000 square feet of meeting space. And a Shula's American Steakhouse will replace the hotel's two lobby-level restaurants." link to article
  3. Am I mistaken? Thought you'd posted a picture of yourself on the 'old' HAIF...
  4. Wow....you could smoke a whole side of beef in that sucker!
  5. Several years ago I noticed a house on the west side of Audley, between W. Alabama and Richmond Ave., perhaps near W. Main This was prior to my gaining an appreciation for this type of architecture, but even then it struck me as an exceptional building. It sat quite far back from the street, was very plain in design, brick, and usually had a Rolls-Royce parked in front. Today I walked down Audley, and saw a vacant lot on the south corner of W. Main and fencing obscuring the north corner, so I don't know if it's been demolished, is behind that fence, or if I'm just not recalling its location correctly. Anyone have a clue as to what I'm talking about?
  6. There are several complexes in Westmoreland which loosely could be defined as 'mod'.
  7. Great pictures, liam - thanks. Have you noticed that much of the cornice, some brickwork and other details have been stripped? I wonder if they're being salvaged - never have seen that done in preperation for the implosion of any other building. It appears that someone's already rescued the bronze lion's heads over the entryway.
  8. It was loud enough in Westmoreland to bring out the neighbors. The building shook.
  9. Psst! That one's blond brick. Whether it's a natural blond, I cannot say.
  10. From the Chron article: "...Rosenthal, exiting the Greenway Plaza meeting about a half-hour before the it ended, said, "I'm going to run for district attorney and I am going to win." He said he did not know if he will have an opponent in the Republican primary. "I certainly hope not. I don't think they've got anybody with the qualifications to run against me," Rosenthal added." Sounds a bit like a veiled threat, no? Anyone recall what happened to Tom Hill when he went up against Speaker of the House Tom Craddick? After failing to unseat Rep. Craddick, Rep. Hill suddenly felt, after 10 terms in office, "a need to move on." Entrenched Texas politicians aren't known for playing softball. Rosenthal has a history of vicious, unprincipled prosecutions, and any opponent - especially from within The Party - had best have a rabies vaccine.
  11. Above posts originally appeared in 'Mixed-Use in the Heights' section of Going UP!
  12. Posts related to the restaurant 'Beavers' have been given their own topic in the Houston Dining, Shopping and Entertainment section. link
  13. Let me rephrase that. Horrible, that it's closing with such little notice, but the facility itself was kind of a dump. Last movie I saw there was An Inconvenient Truth, and I was the only person in the theater! Further, when the movie began, it was out of focus and not even aimed at the screen. Screaming at the projection booth did no good, so I had to exit the theater (after first falling on my face, due to those horrible slanting floors), and persuade the guy at the concession stand to fix it. Still, it will be missed. Will Angelica take up the slack, and drop some of their better-attended mainstream movies? And what will become of this space in Greenway Plaza?
  14. Glad he's retaining the existing building; my understanding is that if it were to be demolished, any new structure would have to be moved further back on the lot. Another successful example would be Katz's Deli, which could not have been rebuilt in its current configuration if the existing building had been demolished.
  15. I think (hope) he meant "get-together", not "ghetto-getter". Have seen this documentary years ago on television; although it had some important points to make, I thought it could have been improved by more aggressive editing. How long does it run, anyway?
  16. Moved thread into new Deed Restrictions, Variances, and Permits subsection. What do those seven small circular shapes on the Westheimer side represent? They're too small to be trees... aren't they?
  17. Check out this recent article: Low Cost Terrazzo Flooring "The Deco-Pour terrazzo typically costs $14 to $16 per square foot installed, whereas a traditional terrazzo floor in the Northwest costs more than $30, Harvey said. The polished overlay Deco-Pour, which doesn't have the added aggregates, costs $10 to $20 a square foot. Projects cost more if the floor needs structural reinforcement, he said" Here's the Deco-Pour link.
  18. The other day I noticed that the second-floor ceiling has a sort of Googie-style curvy thing going on. Any idea what used to occupy that space? It's on the south side of the building.
  19. Merged with existing thread. As mentioned earlier on this thread, other discussion of this movie can be found here
  20. There's a thread dealing with the new Fire Station #8 here. There's a thread on Borden's here, which you started earlier this month. Please post replies or photos to the respective thread.
  21. Agree, and it's not confined to gay men: I'm sure when she started it seemed like a good idea.
