  1. Yes, there's a sign in the window stating they're closing.
  2. Correct on the blasted gas station; the Burger King site was Dorsey's Auto Glass.
  3. Not sure if this is exactly on-topic but the ugliest utility pole prize has to to to the one at the northeast corner of Jack and Richmond. It's cracked about 6' off the ground, and leans at an alarming angle; two 2x4s have been tacked to the sides for support. How Third World.
  4. looks like your wish has come true.Rich's is closing?! What's your source?
  5. Which restaurant? The old Spanish-style one was in the 3500 block. The site has recently been cleaned up and partially repaved for use as a valet parking lot. Site of the former New Orleans Po' Boys would be the block just south of the one being developed.
  6. From the Buffalo Bayou Partnership website: Water quality is the one blemish on the face of Buffalo Bayou. The storm drains throughout urban Houston drain directly into the bayou carrying litter, oil, fertilizers, toxic chemicals, and other non-point source pollutants that come directly from our manicured lawns, little-league fields, and golf courses. Unfortunately, Buffalo Bayou and White Oak currently have the worst water quality of any stream or river in Texas. Most pernicious are the sub-normal levels of E.Coli bacteria. Of course, the Art Guys drank the water and lived to tell about it! (Why are sub-normal levels of E. Coli bacteria 'pernicious'? In this instance, isn't sub-normal a Good Thing?)
  7. There's been a lot of interest in preserving River Oaks Plaza, River Oaks Theater and the Alabama Theater buildings. I hope that the same attention will be given to the Tower Theater, on Westheimer. IMO it's just as worthy of preservation.
  8. Doubtful that these buildings will be imploded, due to their proximity to utilities, other buildings, tunnel system, etc.
  9. I'm really sorry things didn't work out. If it helps, you've earned the admiration of many people. I wish there were more who, like you, have the guts to take a chance.
  10. I doubt that it will be imploded. The William Penn Hotel was brought down by wrecking ball because they couldn't get permission to implode it (or so I'm told.) In addition to pictures, I hope some of the fixtures can be removed and recycled. Anyone need a pedestal sink (or 200?)
  11. I've lived in Westmoreland since '85. The deed restrictions have been maintained, so there are no businesses within its boundries. Mostly a quiet neighborhood - a bit 'cracky' around the edges (as is Avondale.) You'd be hard pressed to find a neighborhood more convenient to everything (Downtown, Midtown, Med Center, Museum District, Montrose and Hwy 59S.) The house on Marshall was built in 1913, (not 1940 - as usual, the appraisal district got it wrong .) It's surrounded by apartment complexes, so the views aren't appealling as some other parts of the neighborhood, and has been considerably modified from its original appearance. I have the impression that it's nicer inside than the 'curb appeal' might indicate.
  12. Good observation. If that particular look appeals to you, there are several houses in the Pecan Park neighborhood which retain those details. I'm sure danax could steer you in the right direction, if you're interested.
  13. It appears that the homebuilder, in interpreting the zoning laws, chose to press his luck. He lost. Good. I cannot understand why anyone would want the first impression he makes on his neighbors to be negative. If the man cannot live without a big, ugly house, surely there are communities where that sort of thing is welcome.
  14. I certainly hope not. Priority must be given to those who live in a neighborhood, not to those who exploit it solely for their own enrichment.
  15. I have been told that one of the terms under which Texas joined the Union was that we could elect to split into five states. Is that true? If so, doesn't that make us divisible?
  16. Yessiree. At this rate, pretty soon you won't be able to open a tire dump, a mobile home park, or even pee off your own front porch without the Gummint interfering with your 'rights'.
  17. Thanks for the links, JAX. This does indeed look like it will be a great addition to Midtown.
  18. Check out the Continental Airlines headquarters from the Pierce Elevated sometime. The acute angle facing the freeway gives the impression that the whole wall is paper-thin, until a different point of view belies its true shape. Also, Pennzoil Place can appear to be a single building or two towers, depending on one's perspective.
  19. Southeast corner; has been vacant for several years (was the site of the notorious French Quarter theater.) Lot was fenced in a month or so ago, and dirt is being moved now. Also, holes have been punched in the side of the parking garage just east of this lot (Elgin @ Milam, former parking for High Fashion Fabrics.) Any info on what's being built?
  20. Or, to put it another way: "Because I dislike Mr. Moore on a personal level, and disagree with some of his postions, I feel justified in stealing from him." I haven't seen the movie yet. As soon as I pay off a few bills, I hope to.
