  1. Um, hurricane damage in Bastrop?
A number of years ago, I stopped in Chapel Hill to see what was there. One of the stops (as though there are all that many attractions there) was an old church. When I asked how old it was, the docent told me it was built in 1900
  2. As WxBoy can tell you, and as many long-time Gulf Coasters can attest to, hurricanes (and tropical storms) can be deceiving. What may seem gargantuan may end up in a whimper, and a little squeak can become a mighty roar.

Take that innocuous little system that formed just offshore and meandered around the Houston area for over a week back in June of

  3. Wow! What a tournament!!!

53-year-old Greg Norman was at the top of the leaderboard after each of the first three rounds, but his legs gave out midway through the final round after leading after 9 holes today. Had Norman won, he would have been the oldest golfer to win a major golf title.

The oldest golfer to win a PGA event is

  4. Reminds me of the time not long after Houston went bust. Many people who bought overvalued homes at outrageous interest rates suffered, and some became homeless as a result. A number of homeless lived under and around the San Jacinto River Bridge out 59.

I saw more that one interview from that location, and was amazed at how many people complained on air about how they had nothing and needed help

  5. There's more information in that one post than in most web sites. Good job!
    Thank you, Sir!

Just wanted to add that I no longer refer to the founders of Houston as "The Allen Brothers". Truth is, Charlotte Baldwin Allen played a large part in the founding and formation of the new city, but rarely receives due credit for her role.

  6. No, but it's not supposed to be torture, either. Many British courses penalize even the best shots by happenstance. I don't understand that philosophy, nor do I agree with it. It's like a guy running the length of the field about to score a touchdown and having a guy come off the bench and tackle him. It's just not fair.

BTW, the above analogy is for 57T-Bird.

  7. The British have always had a proclivity to inflict pain upon their captives. My guess is that it was former British schoolmasters who grew tired of whacking the bottoms of their students, and moved up to a higher level of punishment

  8. Correct me if i am wrong, but i grew up over on the Southeast side, and it seems to me, that there was a Steak and Shake on Broadway , close to Bellfort by Hobby Airport. Maybe i am divulging my age. It was like 32 years ago, i was about 12 years old. LOL

I believe it was on Telephone just south of Belfort. It opened around 1978.

It was also the worst hamburger I ever had, reminiscent of those burgers I used to get at The Whaler in New London while in sub school up there

  9. If any of you are passing through or near Cuero, it would be well worth it to take a gander at the DeWitt County Courthouse. The courthouse had been closed since 2005 for renovations, and reopened just last week.

I went through Cuero last Thursday on the way to Rockport and planned only to drive by and maybe take a photo of the exterior. It was obvious a lot of work had just been completed, so we went in just to check it out. Oh, what a treat that turned out to be!

The interior looks like it was brand new a hundred years ago, and that

  10. I checked through my road atlas, and if I am not mistaken, Texas is the only state in the nation that does not have an interstate, or a non-stop highway between its largest city and its capitol. What a shame!

I hope they close the 969 crossover. They could easily reroute the highway around Burleson Crossing to where 304 now terminates at 71. There will be a street around the shopping center, but not sure if that will be the highway. That crossover is a very dangerous intersection what with cars coming south on 71 coming over the hill at 80 mph or more.

They finally put up a light at 1209 and 71. I would like to see an overpass there, but there are other intersections more in need of one. 21/95 as well as Tahitian at 71 are prime candidates. If the area around the Hyatt grows much more, Pope Bend Road will become another candidate.
