  1. Before I left Houston, DB Horton was building townhomes on E TC Jester between Ella and the North Loop. I never counted, but I would guess they put out some 200 signs along that stretch of Jester, and some 20-30 in a group. A big offender here in Bastrop is Lennar/Nuhome. These signs (and stakes) should be burned!
  2. Just yesterday, I was loading my trailer with the cabinets I made for a house I am redoing, and I had the front door open all the time I was loading up. I came out later to put some tools on the trailer, and I closed the door, something I wouldn

  4. No, they don't, Parrothead. They carry them, but they are not made fresh in that particular store. Before I left Houston, that store was my favorite grocery to shop at. They have a great bakery, but don't do tortillas.
  5. I always got my corn tortillas from Fiesta on N Shepherd. They made them in the store, and I would always feel to make sure the package was warm. Many a time I would eat a few on the way home.
  6. Nothing will ever replace Mexican as my favorite fare. Besides, BBQ in this area has proved to be a mojor disappointment. That includes Lockhart, and Kreuz which had some of the worst Q I have ever eaten.
  7. The Red Onion also has a salsa of crushed pineapple with limejuice and bits of (I believe) serrano in it. Red Onion is one of the very few things I miss about Houston. Call me crazy, but I always thought Pancho
  8. Not sure about that restaurant, but my first taste of KFC was in the late 50s, maybe early 60s at a place called the Bluegrass Inn. It was a nice, dine-in restaurant on Gray across from Capt. John's and the bakery (Mrs. Baird's?). The fare was all-you-can-eat, and you had your choice of either fried chicken or fried shrimp. I am pretty sure the price was $1.99 for whichever you chose. I can

  10. If it's as good as the one on 183 in Austin, it should do well in Houston. Best ribs I ever had.
  11. Can this be possible? It is 2pm on May 17th, and there is a cool breeze blowing outside. My A/C has been off for the past two days. This weather is unreal! Toto Bob, I don

  15. Damn! I can't believe it's been nearly 40 years since I was up there. It was September of '67, my first day of work at Gulf.
  16. I rarely go into Austin on 290 since I live in Bastrop. However, I have had occasion to do so, and every time I go that way, there seems to be another intersection that has a stoplight. There are a number of lights going in Hwy 71 as well, but the highway has been opened to eliminate many of them. The area between Austin and Bastrop is in the beginning stages of what I believe will be a boom. The new Lost Pines Hyatt at Pope Bend Rd has been a boost to the area. The tollway bypassing I-35 will connect to 71 from Manor soon, and that should spur even more growth. I would suggest you check into Bastrop, or the area just west of there for quality of living as well as an investment opportunity. I totally love it here.
  17. TJones, you must not watch Antiques Roadshow.
  18. El-gin Street in Houston is named for a guy named El-ghen. El-ghen is the pronunciation of the town east of Austin. Don't know if the town and the street are named for the same guy, though.
  19. If you are going to have the work done, or for any remodeling work needed, I would suggest going through NARI to find reputable people.
