    HAIF:mag

Perhaps, call it HAIF Texas or Haifer City.
  2. The models have a pretty stong consensus for Tamaulipas. The forecast holds it to TS level.
  3. And how about having the recycling center right behind you, too? The Northeast unit has it all - trains and the sound of smashing glass.
  4. From ABC News: Houston: The U.S. Boomtown They even interviwed Martha Turner! She failed to mention that sales are actually droppping off, likely due to the fact that Houston is exposed to the credit crunch just as much as the rest of the U.S. I was interested in the statistic that ONLY 48% of Houston's economy is energy driven versus 70% in the 80's.
  5. The newest rankings out today: http://www.walkscore.com/rankings/most-walkable-cities.php We're 26! We're 26! Woohoo!
  6. Knowing your neighbors is good, and so is having contact information. We mostly know each other on my block - if not by name, then by face, house, vehicle, and pet (sometimes the pets name). We did a National Night Out party in the middle of the street last year (and probably will this year, too) and exchanged info. Another important thing you can do: Take care of the things that are red flags indicating your neighbor is late coming home or away for an extended time. Some of the things we do in our hood: Getting The Chronicle, The Leader, or a USPS hang tag to a more inconspicuous place (or just tossing The Leader altogether ) Taking a trash can in (part-way up the drive, at least) Putting an away neighbor's trash can out. Of course, all of this is really facilitated by knowing your neighbors in the first place.
  7. There's a place on W 19 - between Lawrence and Shepherd. I think there's also a guy on W 11 somewhere in the vicinity of Tulane.
  8. From the HHA Newsletter: During the summer months, the custodial staff works Monday through Fridays and will open both 14th and 13th Street gates to the track and field from 7 a.m. until dusk, or approximately 8:30 p.m. On holidays, weekends and during staff vacation periods, volunteers from the community will assist the Reagan staff by unlocking the gates twice a day from 7-10 a.m. and again from 5:30-dusk. [Head Athletic] Coach [Harry] Colon asks that the community observe a few rules while using the Reagan facilities. "Please keep all equipment with wheels off of the synthetic track surface including bicycles, skateboards, roller blades and jogging strollers. Also, no pets are allowed or any activities that will cause any damage. We are extremely proud of our new sports complex and look forward to another successful Bulldog football season."
  9. Thank you for this. I was not aware of some of the species on the red list (and I'm into awareness!). I'm glad to see clams and mussels are okay. I've never heard of rainbow smelt.
  10. The trees do tend to block the view (darn those trees!). In the Norhill area, I think your best bet would be to go down to White Oak Bayou (Stude Park).
  11. The fire station at W 12th and Yale From the HHA site: This 7,000 square foot building, built in 1914, served as Houston Heights' original city hall, jail, and fire station. The building has changed little since its construction and is located at 12th and Yale Streets. It operated as a City of Houston fire station from annexation in 1918 until 1995. The Houston Heights Association obtained a 30-year lease from the City of Houston and immediately began restoration of this beautiful, historic building. Restoration was complete in April 1997 and includes a catering kitchen and chair lift. It is perfect for wedding receptions, small and large business meetings, civic organizations, social clubs, parties, garage sales, antique sales, or holiday gatherings.
  12. It's a great lot on a quiet block. The big detractor is the disheveled Solar Supply building across the street.
  13. From Today's Chron Real Estate section... Some Wary of Heights Proposal My favorite quote: "[Tim] Cisneros has been involved in some of the controversial developments, in part, he said, so he can be a positive influence to developers." Oh, I get it. He's Tim X!
  14. Baby steps, perhaps.... From the HBJ City to oversee huge sports multi-use complex "Part of the facility will house a practice field for use by the Houston Dynamo professional soccer club that would include site improvements paid for by the team."
  15. Not on Sunday, but I have before - usually flying straight west or straight east. There are often 2 or more of them together. I did see three apaches flying low, westbound on Saturday morning. One of my neighbors suggested alternate plans in the works for 1-20-09.
  16. You could do wine margaritas or perhaps sangria (with mulling spice to add that Christmas cheer). I advise against putting wine in the eggnog. If you really want folks to get into the Holiday spirit, they could all come dressed apr
  17. As we're discussing the plot just to the north of Viewpoint at the Heights is proposed, what's up with this project?
  18. My concern would be the same, Red. Retreat at the Heights is an improvement to Yale, no doubt. However, it's not an improvement to the neighborhood on W. 22. I would argue that this is not only because of scale, but also due to the fact that there is no "breathe" space. It comes right up to the street and the property to the West. ( See the Google image of the Retreat construction site.) It's also all parking on the lower level. While a building like the one being discussed here might go on White Oak, it would not be kind to the neighbors on Oxford as such a devlopment would have to use this small footprint very efficiently. True. However, per my observation above, they have space around them. These buildings have frontage and are not parked on top of the nearby residents. I never get the feeling these buildings encroach upon the neighborhoods around them thet much (not even Heights Tower which takes ugliness to a bold, new level).
  19. Let's get the yard signs and bumperstickers ready "StopRizkyBusiness.org"
  20. My understanding is that the 25k will go behind (on the Durham side) of the space, and there will still be other retail on the Shepherd side.
  21. A little weak. It's still the best basic wine selection in the Heights when compared to the liquor stores and HEB. While not in the same echelon (no pun intended), I believe they carry more labels than Corkscrew or Cova. I like their 10% discount on 6+ bottles, although I execise my right to it too often . I would expect they may grant some more space to this section with the expansion. So, there are prodigious amounts of beer attainable in a Lousiana gas stations? I would never have guessed . Ayeee!
  22. Down Nicholson 28th to 7th, then hooking east on the right-of-way. You can see pics on the previous page of this thread. I cut some because it was making the page loaading cumbersome. I think it will happen. Just too many hands on it - COH coordination, Federal funds, TXDOT ownership of the right-of-way. Oh yeah, and attempted interloping by Metro.
  23. Yes. It also makes the creek and green space on the west side of the creek more prominent. I would not be surprised, however, if that little green space serves (in part, at least) as overflow parking at busy times.
  24. Mentioned here: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...;hl=whole+foods You're honing your know-it-all skills, stilettoninja. Welcome to HAIF.
