  1. Houston Public Radio's Ed Mayberry has been doing a series this week on Houston's more energy efficient mandates and LEED approaches in marketing and design. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
  2. Thank you for the suggestions. In my haste to run off to a meeting tonight, I failed to mention one other factor: The firm and the whoop are in DC. Saint Arnold's is probably out. However, I discover Shiner has distribution out of Southern MD, and is apparently widely available in our nations capital. My query also turned up this amusing blog which includes a rant about a vegan joint that serves Shiner on tap. The Lewis-Black-meets-Marvin-the-Martian rant on "Why I hate DC" also has some other amusing comments.
  3. Now that I have your attention... Mrs. Porchman is planning a whoop for her firm this summer. She wants to know what a "crowd-pleasing" beer would be. Price would be part of the issue. I stock Dos Equis for our parties, because I have found that it's the one beer that seems to please everybody, and I don't like stocking a bunch Bud, Coors, Leiny's, funky euro-beers, etc. that we're not going to drink. I know it's pricier, but it comes down to a management issue Your thoughts/recommendations? Mrs. P. thanks you!
  4. Actually, to complete the picture, they should have had people sitting at each end of the ladder holding flags...or torches, yeah, torches! This really made my day, Boris.

  6. Gorgeous! The texture and color of the sky is fantastic.
  7. Not sure about the cost on the garage. Plumbing for the aprtment would add a fair amount. 800 SF seems a bit generous for a garage apartment behind a bungalow of similar size. Maybe 600 SF (20x30)? In prioritizing what you need to do on a property, do you really gotta have your cars under cover? Not ridiculous. However, from what I've seen in what's for sale and what has been purchased, $150k gets around the current "for lot only" breakpoint in the western Heights. Good luck!
  8. I think it will be an enhancement to nearby property values, yes. That seems to be the bet the developers are making on Nicholson, as well. This project fits the Heights, well. It should not have lifestyle incursions (like living on/near a cool strip and having peole yack or pee in your shrubs). It's a unique element.
  9. Good pics, wernicke! I went through there yesterday. Impressive! I particularly noted: Memorial Hermman's new pavillion. I didn't realize, from the renderings I had seen, that the first level was open to a courtyard between it and the original building. The Methodist Outpatient Center (pictured). I think they need this. My doc is in Smith Tower (Scurlock? - Oh, hell, I know which garage to park in and how to get in from there). Anyway, there seems to be a real need for space throughout Methodist's professional buildings now. This mega-complex should help. MD Anderson's expansion south of OST. Some nifty stuff going in down there. The Bertner extension across the Bayou. Now that makes sense!
  10. It's still the hub of the State government, yes. Great pics, Editor. One other thing Columbus has in common with Houston: Annexation. The City ate up a ton of Franklin County in the 80's.
  11. Organic gunk shouldn't be a problem. If it's ugly, see if you can culture something more appealing (e.g. moss). In my opininion, the gap is healthy because it allows the foundation slab and patio slab to float independently. Regular inspections are a good idea. There are a variety of trees that do this. Chopping the tree down may not stem your problem. The roots may have a life of their own. Killing the root system can be tough without flooding your property with poisons. Keep plucking those sprouts off. If you have kids, give them a nickle for everyone they nick.
  12. Yeah, what sunsets saw, is what I saw. It was not a DC-3. It had 4 engines, twin-rudder tail. Big. Moving slow and low. Perhaps, it was a B-24.
  13. Yuck? Yay! Potbelly's is good, but I like Arby's, too - sometimes for the classic (albeit over-cooked, and over-processed) roast beef, sometimes for the market fresh sandwiches like the pecan chicken. Although, I could also make a meal out of curly fries and a jamocha shake. Carbs! Damn, I'm hungry now.
  14. East End Rail Route Back on Track Monday, April 7, 2008 By: Jack Williams After a weekend meeting of the minds, it appears Metro's plan to connect its planned East End light rail line with a key transit center is back on track. Houston Public Radio's Jack Williams reports. Story here: http://app1.kuhf.org/houston_public_radio-...ticles_id=30070
  15. It's up again tonight, but without an escort. It has circled over my place at least twice so far.
  16. Not HAR, HCAD: "LTS 32 & 33 BLK 28 RICE MILITARY" I thought that the "Military" comes from Camp Logan which is still the name of the subdiv to the west and the "Rice" from the mills that used to be to the east. Rice Mill-itary...get it? There is some discussion about the name here . Apparently nobody really knows.
  17. Fleas suck! Are you using Advantage Multi or just Advantage? The former appears to work really well (on cats, at least). There are yard treatments. Never used any myself. I think there's one in a dust form (Weighs on the fleas??).
  18. Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one. 22 Malone is in Rice Military. Anybody got a good answer as to how the subdiv got its name? There's a thread out there, but I'm not sure it was resolved.
  19. Based on the sequence of photos and the forestation, it's definitely west of Shepherd. There is a small shoal like this near Bayou Bend Tower, which is a favorite of the gators. It's visble from the deck of Brenner's on the Bayou (former Rainbow Lodge building).
