  1. Are they cicadas or crickets? We've got a buch of crickets here. My cat just played with one.
  2. Beautiful shots, Boris - as always! Depends what you mean "Heights proper". The earlier photos are of Woodland Heights - home to Bayland, Euclid, Woodland and a host of other streets much revered for their arching, live oak bows. The commercial bits are along Studewood which separates central Houston Heights (which consists of Houston Heights, primarily, Stude, and a bunch of other subdivs which share less restricted development than Woodland Heights and Norhill to its north). The latter photos are of central Heights. As far as transitional status - well, hmmm, - the Heights is ever-changing. We moved here in May, 2005 (we live in the western Heights where we do alot of lasso dancing is done ), and there have been nearly 30 new housing units developed within two blocks of our house since then. That's pretty transitional! We've had some crime, but the Tricons being built on the next block are tromping what was effectively a halfway house from Huntsville that rendered our neighborhood's leading break-in suspect. What is great about the Heights is the sense of the place. Today, I conversed with 3 neighbors while doing my morning yard work, had a two-hour lunch with a friend at Berryhill, conversed with neighbors for 45 minutes upon my return, and I am posting from my back porch amongst the crickets and the last hoots of the doves. (Okay. There a few barking dogs and a crazy rooster, too). The streets aren't always neatly curbed. There are some really interesting domiciles ('nuff said) I grew up in a small town in northeastern Ohio. I feel like I've returned home when I walk around the Heights or just sit on my porch (thus my call sign, BTW). Also, Mrs. Porchman have the added benefit of being no more than 10 minutes away (often closer) from great culture - food and art . We would welcome your joining us here, cnote.
  3. Redscare's in reruns! The episode aired again last night. It will re-air at 2:30 this afternoon.
  4. I thought of this 1BR/1BA house on W15th, but it's much bigger per HCAD - 600 sf.
  5. The eave space in the first few pics... attic into which you're expanding or existing living space? I see an some utility (a duct) at the far end. Are you running that under a new subfloor or tucking behind a wall?
  6. It's on the NW corner of 18th and Ashland. The sales trailer is on the south side of 18th, which makes me wonder if they have not also procured property on that side, as well. I would think they woould have to if they're going to add more units in future phases per lwood's post.
  7. I hope this is the right thread. At one point, we seemed to have a bunch going on this. I was starting to wonder if this project was a go. They haven't done much at the lot yet, save a little scraping of old asphalt. They are in sales mode now. They have a sales trailer on W. 18 (behind Heights Assembly of God) HAR shows listings ranging from about $450k on the high end to about $170k on the low end.
  8. Today's HBJ reports that as part of the celebration surrounding its convention at the GRB 1/23 through 1/30, Mary Kay cosmetics is making a $20,000 donation to The Old Sixth Ward Neighborhood Association in honor of its founder, Mary Kay Ash, who grew up in the neighborhood.
  9. Well, if it's in The Leader, it must be official Interesting...I had not heard about TXDOT's plans. It would make sense, at least, for the trail to continue through to TC Jester and connect to the trail at 11th. If it only went that far, that would allow for TXDOT's drainage dreams come true.
  10. He's real. He's sort of like Charlie with 4,400+ angels. "Your assignment, Angels, is to find me at a building implosion, and offer me chocolate"
  11. Well, don't say it to a woman, and keep that chocolate bar concealed .
  12. We went through the house on Saturday. About 40 volunteers were doing major cleaning - inside and out. Polishing wood, polishing the fireplace fixtures, cleaning light fixtures, polishing the silverware, dusting on tops of door frames, cleaning window. Not sure if it had to do with the current issues or was just regular maintenance. We did notice, however, that the place was in need of some attention - trim painting being the most apparent. (I didn't get up on the roof to check it out. ) It's a great edifice and a great example of a more gracious period. I particulalrly like the stonework on the outside. I snapped some shots of the (outside only, as allowed) and will upload later.
  13. Insiders in the Republican party (yes, I know a few, and they're very nice people as long as you don't discuss politics) have said that Rosenthal has been in their sites prior to this. His grandstanding that jeopardized cases early in his tenure really annoyed many HCRP leaders. However their facing the prospect of deposing an inumbent was distasteful. I guess they're getting over it (see: race for Harris County Judge).
  14. Am I inferring correctly that they are putting an eastbound exit for Heights/Yale off I-10?
  15. Well, I know this totally breaks Forum rules, but it's Christmas, darnit. So here it is... Mixed-use hits the HeightsUrban village project breaks new ground in old neighborhood Houston Business Journal - by Allison Wollam Houston Business Journal The first mixed-use project is coming to one of Houston's oldest neighborhoods. ::Post edited by Editor::
  16. Apologies. I searched Lakeview and got np hits before posting. Please merge to http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...showtopic=14208
  17. From the HBJ... A New York developer is blowing into the small city of Taylor Lake Village with a plan to construct a pair of towering buildings. Two 19-story condo towers are being proposed for the north side of Clear Lake in Taylor Lake Village -- where no building stands taller than three stories. The 1.24-square-mile city is one of many located in the Clear Lake area, such as El Lago, Seabrook and Nassau Bay. Read on at the Houston Business Journal
