That is part of it. Though I would say Baton Rouge, at least the area I was thinking of, has wider roads. To be honest, though, I didn't spend that much time there, rode in a car, went over the railroads at T.C. Jester, went on a couple of roads, stopped at the spice shop, passed Restaurant Depot on the way out. I didn't even get to see Heights Boulevard, and only went on Nicholson. It would be unfair to say that ALL of the Heights represents what I saw, just one part of it. -

Visited the Heights for the first time yesterday (Penzeys Spices, specifically). It did remind me a bit of the part of Baton Rouge where my uncle lives (will be moving out soon): lots of trees, relatively narrow paved roads (Heights roads seemed to be narrower, at least the part near the old railroad spur), and even battered stop signs. It seems every stop sign in the Heights was damaged somehow: bent, scratched, vandalized, or something (just like in BR!) -

I-10 From Katy Is Jam Packed Since School Started

School does seem to wreck havoc on roadways. Even in College Station, one stretch of road between two stoplights grinds to a crawl between 5 and 6pm (I blame the new-ish student apartments there). But I am surprised that Katy Freeway got this way so fast. -

I read that there was a Fame City installed in Memorial City Mall (spread out through the mall, apparently) in the late 1980s (didn't last long). I'm guessing there were multiple locations...? -
ALDI Grocery Stores

I thought Aldi was relatively nice (if low-end), based on the reviews I read. But on my Google Earth adventures, Aldi always seems to be in the most desolate, blighted areas. -
I actually haven't seen too much of them in Baton Rouge, even though I have been to BR multiple times, except for that continous flow intersection on Airline Highway. Though I would think the Houston/Baton Rouge driver situation is a toss-up. To be fair, I haven't seen a Houstonian treat a merging lane like a yield, however.

One of the strange things about Houston, I've felt, is the "Stop Here on Red" signs (they're not at every section, but I've seen at least one somewhere in University Place/Upper Kirby, and I suspect there are more), even when it's not at a railroad/light rail crossing. Is it for emergency vehicles? People who are too lazy to find the stop line, what? I just kind of felt like there wasn't a purpose for it. An Internet search mentions that there's one in San Antonio to maybe try to prevent cutting, but is it a problem at inner-city sections of Houston?

There's another curve south on N Houston Rosslyn Road near Log Hollow Road that looks like it was taken out circa 1990.

- I can't take that goofy vertical Macy's sign seriously. Unless they actually went the extra mile and made it more like the NYC Macy's (for starters, putting in actual places to eat inside the store, not downsizing), then they probably shouldn't mess with it too much. Want something cool? Change it back to a Foley's. - I've been to downtown. There are some nice things (the fountains under the light rail are pretty neat), but it's kind of sketchy and not a place to be at night. - Who are they aiming for? Locals? Tourists? -
I think "Fresh Fare" isn't actually part of the store, it's just some of the junk they put on the side, sort of like how H-E-B has "H-E-B Fresh Foods" but it isn't the actual name of the store, you know? I heard that the Montrose Kroger had its third renovation. Obviously the second renovation added on the "Signature", and I'm betting on late 1990s. Before the Signature rebranding, did the Kroger somewhat resemble this[/a]? (except for the script "Kroger", and not the block lettering)? I'm betting yes.

I've noticed that prior to this renovation, the Montrose Kroger was branded as a Kroger "Signature", which is puzzling, as the Kroger seemed to never be very large or upscale, quite the opposite in fact (note: "Signature" is different from the "Marketplace" stores in Richmond and Rosenberg)

Hence the phrase "roughly parallel", as in, it doesn't really skew away from Interstate 45 until Huntsville. It's not directly paralleling the highway like US-290, or how I-10 west used to be, but it's close enough to it to work as an alternate for the northern suburbs.

Doesn't Interstate 45 roughly parallel the railroad? Couldn't traffic be (in theory) alleviated by a commuter train running from Conroe to downtown, with a stop downtown roughly where "the Katy" connected to the main? http://g.co/maps/7yb5z

Only have gone north on Interstate 45 one time (north in mid-day: the airport to Conroe), wasn't bad. So, in the mornings and evenings, is it like 290 every morning? I think double decking would be an effective solution, I suppose.

It's one of the few places in Houston metro (one of three, I think, one of which isn't open yet) that serves Orange Julius. Wow.

Ha ha, Wikimapia is not related to Wikipedia at all (as related to Wikipedia as Wikileaks, which also isn't related), but it is a similar concept (and usually a lot more accurate).

Another store closed was a Toys R Us off of Interstate 10 (Katy Freeway) that was admittedly struggling prior to Ike, as well as a flea market in a first-generation Kmart that already had a leaking roof. The roof is in shambles today.

US 290/Hempstead Toll Road Expansion

I think Bauer Road is near the Grand Parkway ROW, but not on it. Back in 2008, there was a sign for a new strip mall next to the outlet mall to be anchored by H-E-B. I wonder if it's still planned? -
So, I was reliving my 2008 Galveston vacation (some HAIFers may remember that I took a regular Houston vacation in 2008, but that was in the spring. No one remembers that? OK) with the Google Maps API, and I noticed that the Home Depot, the one at 20251 Gulf Freeway, just south of Baybrook Mall, has a completely empty parking lot. I can't find anything, however, that proves Home Depot closed this particular location (even though it seems to have happened nearly two years ago). Is it closed?

Kmart was one of my guesses, but it didn't (at least from my very limited looks at Bing/Google Street View) look like one right away. It being a Globe or Sage was an option. But thanks! Looks like according to Google Earth, closed in the mid-1990s.

I was looking around on Google Maps for some reason, when I came across this odd flea market that appears to be something else at one point in time. Building looks to be in bad shape. http://g.co/maps/cx4xe 630 West Little York is the address, but I can't find anything on it except that it's "Trading Fair 4" flea market today.
