  1. @Hydeaway: Hmm...there's a "Foley's Cooking Fiesta", so obviously, this was before the major downscaling.
  2. Those black quotes seem a bit...blinding. Will putting the "-" back on let you see who did it to you BEFORE it was removed? Admittedly, some (okay, more than some) of my posts sucked, but half of the minuses just seemed to be on any post I made.
  3. Yeah, I found out through my iPod that something was up...the mobile version looked a lot better.
  4. IKEA's made some off-the-wall commercials that you likely won't see on TV anytime soon...just search for "banned ikea commercials" on YouTube. Anyway, this IKEA is only about five years old. Apparently, the original IKEA was just in front of the current one, and before that, used be a IKEA-style store called STØR. Wonder what the inside of THAT one looked like...
  5. How many logos did Foley's have over the years? There's the red FOLEY'S (??-60s), foley*s (through the late 60s-early 80s?), FOLEY'S (with part of the E missing, early 1980s-early 1990s), FOLEY'S (sort of like 1980s one, early 1990s-2006)...am I missing anything? Also, when did the branch restaurants close?
  6. From what I heard Greenspoint is still doing extremely badly. There was a nasty comment left about Greenspoint Mall here. It's mostly complaining about the mall, how it's overrun with crime, in poor physical condition, rumors of Dillard's Clearance Center calling it quits, etc. etc.
  7. While it's not a blog (a wiki), have you ever seen the Lost wiki?
  8. Quick question: how long was it between the complete demolition of Town & Country Mall and the groundbreaking of CityCentre?
  9. Haven't we discussed 290 commuter rail, and basically ruled it out because of the freight and spur usage?
  10. Did anyone see the series finale yesterday? What did you think of it?
  11. Out of curiosity, since when does "outside the 610 loop" equals to the "suburbs"? There's a lot of Houston outside 610 but within the city limits. Greenspoint even manages to defy this further by being outside the tollway yet STILL within the city limits!
  12. ...I didn't really look at the PDF. Or any links provided here. You don't have to be mean, I was simply skimming over the topic.
  13. Why trolley? Why not just use regular LRT?
  14. ...Isn't Wegmans in Virginia and Maryland? I heard it was a good grocery store, but Houston (much less BCS) doesn't have it. Or Publix. Or Trader Joe's.
  15. On either Westheimer or Kirby, I saw a small gray H-E-B. Cool in a way, as those H-E-Bs are becoming an endangered species in many aspects. So at first, I thought this thread was talking about that HEB.
  16. Yeah, there was a smaller building directly next to the former Kmart (see it on the 1995 aerial view, available on MSR Maps and Google Earth) that I heard was a Piggly Wiggly. The "former Kmart Foods" was just an educated guess as Kmart Foods was a grocery store built adjacent to Kmart stores in the 1970s (and the Kmart was definitely an old one)
  17. Let's see... COLLEGE STATION OPEN: Albertsons (University) Opened late 1980s or early 1990s as Randalls, became Albertsons 1997 H-E-B (Holleman) Opened 2002 Kroger Signature Store (Rock Prairie) Opened 2000 or 2001 Kroger (Southwest Parkway and Texas) Opened late 1970s or early 1980s Walmart (Supercenter) Opened 1990(?), expanded 2010 to Supercenter CLOSED: Albertson's (College Avenue and University) Started as Skaggs-Albertson's in 1971, then Skaggs-Alpha Beta in the late 1970s or early 1980s, then Jewel-Osco 1991-1992, then Albertsons again until '97 Albertsons (Texas Avenue, Harvey Mitchell, and Longmire) Opened anywhere from 1982-1990, closed 2008 AppleTree (Texas Avenue and Harvey) Opened possibly as early as the 1970s as Safeway, became AppleTree in late 1980s or early 1990s (1988?). Closed 2005-2006. Piggly Wiggly (Texas Avenue, Harvey Mitchell, and Valley View) Closed in the early 1990s. Possibly former Kmart Foods. Winn-Dixie (Southwest Parkway and Texas) Opened in the 1980s, closed around 1997. Now Lack's furniture BRYAN Sadly, I don't have all the info for Bryan. But I'll try to do to my best (thanks to Scotch) OPEN: H-E-B (21 and Texas) Opened as H-E-B Pantry Foods, but appears to be a regular H-E-B. H-E-B (Tejas Center) Opened 2005. Kroger Signature Store (Boonville) Opened circa 2006. Village Foods Opened as AppleTree in the 1990s. Became Village Foods '08 CLOSED: Kroger (Post Office Street and Texas Avenue) Opened in the 1980s(?), but closed in circa 2006. Now 99 Cent Store. Replaced by Boonville store. Kroger (Manor East Mall) 1970s-1980s. Replaced by Post Office Street store. Now Hastings. H-E-B Pantry Closed 2005 when Tejas Center opened. Opened in the 1990s. Now Harmony Science Center. Albertsons (Townshire) Opened circa 2003 but closed a few years later. Lasted less than three years, I think Winn-Dixie (Carter Creek Center) Closed late 1990s. Opened possibly in the 1980s. It's not a 70s Winn-Dixie. Jewel (Jewell?) Now the shopping center that houses Jacque's. There appears to be a building that may have supermarket at a block surrounded by Texas/29th/28th/Tabor Also there's a building that is surrounded by William J Bryan/Texas/Houston/26th that houses Bryan ISD. One of these was probably the Weingarten's/Safeway. AppleTree on 21 and Texas could've been a former Safeway but is currently another grocery. I heard it is a Mexican grocery now. There was Townshire's short-lived Albertsons, the Tejas Center H-E-B, the "other" H-E-B up north, Village Foods, and Winn-Dixie (now gone). I'll update/add them in a later list. I can't find some of the older supermarkets listed...
  18. I've finally gotten around to posting my incomplete supermarket list here (inspired by the theaters) COLLEGE STATION OPEN: Albertsons (University) Opened late 1980s or early 1990s as Randalls, became Albertsons 1997 H-E-B (Holleman) Opened 2002 Kroger Signature Store (Rock Prairie) Opened 2000 or 2001 Kroger (Southwest Parkway and Texas) Opened late 1970s or early 1980s CLOSED: Albertson's (College Avenue and University) Started as Skaggs-Albertson's in 1971, then Skaggs-Alpha Beta in the late 1970s or early 1980s, then Jewel-Osco 1991-1992, then Albertsons again until '97 Albertsons (Texas Avenue, Harvey Mitchell, and Longmire) Opened anywhere from 1982-1990, closed 2008 AppleTree (Texas Avenue and Harvey) Opened possibly as early as the 1970s as Safeway, became AppleTree in late 1980s or early 1990s (1988?). 19. Probably. I'm guessing it will be a repaint probably one of these weekends when we're least expecting it.
  20. The Food Section may very well look like the Wal-Mart of Blairsville, NC(?)...right down to the yellow walls: http://skycity2.blogspot.com/2009/08/wal-mart-style-in-blairsville_30.html
  21. I found the physical copy of the magazine, and yes, I was wrong. I read it wrong somehow...
  22. The physical copy of the magazine had a map of all the locations. I don't have the physical copy of the magazine with me, but I'm almost sure that most of the things were between 610 and Beltway 8...unless I'm horribly mistaken, in which case I find the magazine and either apologize regarding miscommunication or an outright error.
  23. I got the first issue of the redesigned Bloomberg Businessweek ("Bloomberg" was added earlier this year or late last year) and they had a one-page article about things to do in Houston. It seemed woefully incomplete (and about half of the action OUTSIDE the inner loop) but I thought you guys might enjoy it. http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/10_18/b4176120000767.htm
  24. So then, our call to rally against the British was "no taxation without representation", so shouldn't there be "no representation without taxation"? Seems there should be.
  25. That green splotch at the intersection of I-10 and Beltway 8 is likely created by CityCentre.
