  1. Did you know the first gay couple in married in Massachusetts is (are?) filing for divorce? Haven't heard that one too much.
  2. Sadly, your post is full of bitter irony. After Obama was elected, it seemed all the bitter Bush-hating celebrities all got into the "let's love America" phase. And I would say the "left" (note that I didn't say Democrats) has been fighting all this time, ever since Day One. The HAIF is not full of jerks (though there are some besides JB) because some forums won't even do this.
  3. Has anyone noticed how the topic on the allowing/disallowing teaching of evolutionism/creationism just devolved into an attack on Christianity? Shame on all those involved.
  4. I'm trying to locate old spurs in BCS. Spur #1 is existing. It goes to the Food Science Center in A&M. (linkie) Spur #2 is in the Industrial Park, though it looks as if a spur could go to Leonard. (linkie) Spur #3 is a tricky one. It crossed Finfeather. (linkie) Spur #4 went deep into the heart of Riverside Campus. (linkie) Spur #5 goes to the power plant. Most of it appears to be intact. (linkie) Spur #6 goes to the business park. Appears to be relatively new. (linkie) There has to be more, though.
  5. Sorry about the bump, but I made an updated copy. Small X's are poles and railroad guards. It makes me curious. Jones-Butler Rd. N is now closed from Harvey Mitchell... ...not that it did any help.
  6. Went there today. The food wasn't spectacular, but it was good. EDIT: The signage is big and beautiful, and it appeared to be relatively popular. I wonder if they could come to CSTX again.
  7. The link seems to be broken. Here is a corrected version!

    SimCity 4!

Is anyone on the HAIF a SimCity 4 player? I'm LivingInThePast on Simtropolis and Orange Julius on SC4D. Same person. SimCity 4 as of late has gotten pretty cool, with more buildings than you shake a stick at The latest innovation is single-track railroads, and there is more to come. While we're on the subject, are there any Houston buildings in SimCity?
  9. I have a compost pile! My family does, anyway. Grass clippings, leaves, garden clippings, fruit leftovers, rotten fruits and vegetables, coffee grounds, and egg shells all go in. Only seen possums once. Eventually it will decompose into a drippy, muddy, mess, full of nutrients. It really is being environmentally friendly.
  10. I feel like making a post on SimCity 4 on the HAIF sometime. It will be...kind of cool. Everyone likes SimCity, right?
  11. I know IGN Rd. stands for International & Great Northern, but F&B is beyond me... Does anyone know?
  12. I thought it was going to rebuilt as a SuperTarget...or something. Yes. The "Closed by Ike" means that the businesses are gone and aren't coming back. Macy's has asserted Deerbrook will reopen, as well as Almeda. Northwest? Not so.
  13. I'm trying to get a list of businesses closed by Ike that did not/probably not going to reopen. H-E-B Pantry Foods, Galveston Dillard's, Mall of the Mainland, Texas City Macy's, Northwest Mall, Houston Target, The Woodlands
  14. That is "demonstration", I believe, but I also feel like its "demolition", the way things are going.
  15. But usually these storage tanks have had noxious chemicals inside (gasoline, sulfur, etc.) Like popcorn smells in movie theater seats, the smell would be kind of difficult to remove. Really, while possible, storage tank residences are not going to be the homes of the future, so to speak. It would be cheaper to tear it down and build a new building.
  16. And before that a mini-enclosed mall! I think thats how it was. But what were the (main) stores?
  17. What? No! See, what happened is there was this outdoor shopping district called Town & Country Village. Then in the early 1980s, they built an enclosed mall called Town & Country Mall to the north of it. The Mall and the Village co-existed. Then the Mall went downhill and was demolished (in what, 2005?). The Mall is being rebuilt as "CityCentre", not affliated with the nearby Village.
  18. http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive.mpl?id=1990_742374 mentions "Not everything at the Galleria has gone swimmingly. One of the most notable failures was the bowling alley that was an original tenant of the mall. The alley proved to be a little out of place for an upscale center. "
  19. I heard there was a bowling alley IN the Galleria, which didn't last long. Is that it?
  20. A while back, there was a large coffee-table book with lots of great Houston architecture photos. But it also cost upwards of $50 and was a little dry. So I come with another suggestion...a second HAIF-branded book, except focusing on the "past stories of Houston". Someone could comb the Historic Houston forum for great stories of the past, and publish them in a book form (with photos). It would also be in a book form, but much smaller (enough to bring on a road trip). What do you say? A great idea, or a trash idea?
  21. Apparently, there was ANOTHER mini-mall in Houston that managed to go under the radar...the ARMADILLO MALL, now apparently a Garden Ridge (which one?) Does anyone know about this mall? What were the anchors?
  22. You're right, I was a bit disappointed that the METRO cars were only two cars (and not, say, five or six).
  23. I don't think we really share the same concepts on what light rail is and isn't. I mean, when I think of "light rail", I think of DART. I think of the Houston METRO. I think of Philly's SEPTA. Light rail can "transfer" to subway (like NYC's subway or D.C. Metro) or el-rail (Chicago). When I think of trolley, I think of a one-car system, running between the roads with no grade crossings (Galveston or San Francisco), and when I think of commuter rail, I think of...Amtrak. Light rail COULD work for College Station or Waco but it would horrendously uneconomical and would never, ever break even...let alone make a profit.
