  1. Whoa, is that the old Mervyn's? What happened there?
  2. Does anyone care...? I have the last page...I can scan it...but I don't want to if there's no demand.
  3. I'm a rarer breed...a College Station HAIFer. I know a significant bit about College Station, have been to Houston many times a year, enough to know what's going on...but I found it awesome/strange that I can ask something terrifically obscure and have it answered in a matter of hours.
  4. Oh gosh, is it that Holiday Inn Select by the Galleria? The 70s brutalist architecture one? Have to agree on that one.
  5. Page 2! Don't you love that hot 80s babe on the cover? (I do...but it's the 80s!) And one more! Last page tomorrow.
  6. * Reopen the H-E-B Pantry! * Actually build proper things to keep the beach from eroding. * Get the homeless bums out of the street. * Add a real mall or something. The Mall of the Mainland is screwed either way, put something new and nice and enclosed in Galveston. * Don't rebuild the Hooters on the gulf. * Don't let millionaires build houses right on the coast, and if they do, don't let them collect hurricane insurance after a hurricane. * Abandon the Bolivar peninsula road and rebuild it, as it would be too expensive to clear out the rubble. * Let the Strand come back to life with real stuff. that's all for now...
  7. But...that's what makes the roadsides of Houston unique! It's part of Houston and Texas in general! What about the grand openings of restaurants? And car dealership sales? Oh, screw the Houston government! They don't know what they're doing!
  8. The College Station HAIFer changed to (uglier in my opinion) a picture of the water tower. What's up with that?
  9. Was. Besides, The Niche, I made that Pebble Creek McMansion story that no one said anything about, and I also made the Defunct Restaurants of BCS thread.
  10. Oh yeah? Just wait until someday...I'll post all my Splashtown stuff, my circa 2003 Galleria map, and a new avatar to boot!
  11. Here's some more... 1. You think that Houston is a much more interesting city than your own. 2. You are distraught at the loss of lighted Foley's signs along the highway, and also miss the Service Merchandise. 3. You can ask about something terrifically obscure in Houston and people understand you. 4. You still get upset when someone mentions Astroworld. 5. You've never seen snow except in pictures, except that one trip to Minnesota. 6. You understand Dallas vs. Houston fights. 7. You want people in The Woodlands to be less snobby or be one of them. One of the two. 8. You start believing NenaE is really a plush tiger, Memebag wears a hat, and Editor perpetually has a blank look on his face. 9. You fantasize about building a real, mass-transit subway/light rail line in Houston for the masses. 10. You wonder why the smog is located in Baytown and not over I-610.
  12. Except for the fact you joined in 2004, long before Sarah Palin became a household name. Nice try. The name IronTiger is from when I was still heavily into SimCity 4 and was dreaming if I was a super modder/BAtter and what things I made. Similar to SimGoober or Pegasus, I picked IronTiger. Then, I got on HAIF to find the Foley's building. Not the downtown department store, mind you, the corporate headquarters. I registered as IronTiger because that was still fresh on my mind. (I never got my question answered, by the way)
  13. http://www.theeagle.com/local/Blaze-destroys-topless-bar
  14. The Wikipedia article for Hanna Barbera Land was largely composed from a letter I got from the manager of Splashtown. I'll scan it someday. I know that strip center! It wasn't in Rice Village...but it wasn't too far away. I ate at a dirty Middle Eastern buffet there. Anyone know the name? (sorry for doubleposting)
  15. A year ago, a remodel was planned for Almeda, but nothing has happened since then. I've never been inside, and it has a great location, but it sports a pretty ugly entrance sign. http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories.../30/story8.html
  16. Well, last time I was in Houston, I stayed at this motel here: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...mp;t=h&z=18 ...the one with the red roof. Our room faced the railroad tracks. No train ever woke me up or kept me from a good night's sleep.
  17. Also, does ANYBODY know the name of the Chinese place where 2nd Chance Resale is on Wellborn now?
  18. I feel that the whole effort was misguided. Take Bryan, Texas. They went through a major process of remodeling everything, pouring taxes into new roads and pedestrian sidewalks, and adding goofy new statues and clocks. I kind of miss the old downtown, and now it's a fake-looking strip with a hotel that continually loses money, a landmark theater that continues to fall apart, and all sorts of junky niche stores no one cares about. Top that off with the fact that the official website has no map of the place. Yeah, it does have a neat street-side pharmacy, but the location as a whole is miserable. They should've just knocked out a few blocks to make a shopping mall incorporating the LaSalle Hotel and Queen Theater.
  19. WHOA! I just threw away a frisbee featuring the long gone restaurant! So that's how it came into our family's possession...
  20. Hey! I like old Krogers, and I would've liked to take a picture of this one when I went to Houston last. Any pictures?
  21. I thought it was the latter, but Google Maps says differently. Does this mean SW Frwy (US-59) is wrong too? http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...mp;t=h&z=13
  22. The Greenspoint Lord & Taylor once had an in-store restaurant. Did the MCM L&T have the same?
  23. Does the neighbor who leaves the Christmas lights on all year count?
