  1. Oh, and Luby's Cafeteria and Chelsea Street Pub & Grill were there. I don't have any pictures of Chealsea Street in Post Oak Mall but here is a picture of it in a mall in Memphis (mall is now demo'd)
  2. T-Bone Jones and Tom's BBQ were pretty notorious for serving bad meals before going defunct. However, both were great restaurants before things went downhill. Also, Confucius Chinese Cuisine (where Walgreen's is now) was an ornate building and had some of the best egg rolls ever. I believe it was right near Imperial Chinese (which was near the pawn shop?). Also, when did the "Egg Roll House" on University close?
  3. Given that the area restaurant guide came out relatively recently, I'd like to take this time to have discussions of old restaurants. Here are a few: Tuscany's: The Gelato place closed down and is replaced by some sign of a karate guy kicking! What happened? The abandoned steakhouse on Texas Ave.: You've always seen it...it's the one with the tepees and the vine-coated sign, between Kroger and Wal-Mart...but what is it? Defunct Post Oak Mall Eateries: According to an insert when Post Oak Mall opened, Chick-fil-A and Corn Dog 7 opened as well as the following eateries: Funnel Cakery, Giovanni's, The Great Hot Dog Experience, Ken Martins Chicken Fried Steak (looks like that venture didn't go too well), Peanut Shack (it's actually a candy and nut shop that still seems to exist in forgotten places), Pepe's, Potatoes Etc., Salad Bartique (that is how it's spelled), Seafood Shoppe, and Sesame Hut. Also, McDonald's, Orange Julius, and Subway had presence as well. Swenson's was also in it, as well as the now-defunct location near Los Cucos. I believe it closed Dec. 2005 but I could be wrong. The ice cream there (as well as the clown ice creams) were awesome! I wasn't sad to see Pancho's (where Los Cucos is now) go. Pancho's had these creepy sun masks all against the wall. They gave me nightmares! T-Bone Jones was a sad loss, but you couldn't find it unless you were looking for it after they redid University. Tom's BBQ I have a menu of, but I never ate there. That's all I can think of for now...anyone know of these places/have restaurants they knew of too/etc. etc.?
  4. I noticed Sharpstown Center/Mall is up for sale, lost its (awful) website, lost all of its anchors (except for Burlington Coat Factory) and so on and so forth. What is/was the mall like? I got a vintage picture of the mall, and I heard it double-decked in the 1980s and all that but I'm largely lost on it... Can anyone clue me in?
  5. Well, mostly I wanted to bring up the Roly Poly, but the kind of area has intrigued me for the longest time. The parking lot is absolutely horrible and the only parking lot built on a hill. I remember when the car wash near Gold's Gym was some sort of abandoned burger joint and the Gold's Gym was a CarePlus. I remember large trees near KFC and (what was) the Eckerd. I remember Winn-Dixie. I remember the abandoned Royder's (now NailSpa). I vaguely remember something before Stein Mart, but I forgot. The Kroger I liked the best. They kind of blew it when they remodeled. My favorite aspects were: 1) The tiny entrances at the right side with the large arrows. At least they were automatic. 2) The red stripe that ran the perimeter of the store. Oh, when I was a child, I loved it! 3) The fact that they printed fruit and veggie nutritional facts on the bags. 4) The corridor in the back of the store that was a one-way aisle straight into the dark, awesome milk section. 5) The fact that they hard these plastic milk mock-ups (and an orange juice one) to display prices. The above two were changed around in the renovation, the dark milk section remains but it no longer has that "quiet, end-of-the-store" feel. The milk jugs were removed (I wish I could've gotten it before they threw it away) And finally... 6) The deli at the end of the store and the entrance to the video place. Although I never went through the corridor to either store (or ate at the deli) I was well aware of both and enjoyed the ramp down. It clearly showed that the Kroger was three feet below the end of the video store. The sunken area was removed and the deli was converted into a bank of some sort. Oh well, at least I have memories...
  6. Several weeks ago I went to the Memorial City Mall and wow, it's awesome. However, I heard that it wasn't always as vibrant, busy, unique, and upscale as it used to be. Any anecdotes/photos?
  7. For as long as I remember, Roly Poly has been next to the College Station Kroger (not the Rock Prairie one). Does anyone remember this store? I never went inside it, but the sign is still there.
  8. Cinemark might have had 1995 because my siblings claim they saw "Pocahontas" (1995) and I know I saw "Dinosaur" (2000) at Schulman 6.
  9. I also remember it saying "Oxygen" for the longest time...what was up with that?
  10. That's what I was thinking of...1996 or 1997 was the closure date.
  11. Someone at the Post Oak Mall article claims the cinema closed in 2000 because of some vague SEC filings that claim it was either operated by Carmike or Loew's (two different articles that claim contradictory things!). However, I believe it was General Cinema and closed long before the 21st century rolled around. What say you?
  12. Didn't there used to be a swimming pool there, a long time ago (filled in in the late 90s)?
  13. But Kroger is now a somewhat ugly office area, Schulman 6 is a college building, and Winn-Dixie is still vacant.
  14. http://209.189.226.235/stories/073007/busi...20070730022.php Updated link. I think that the renovation will also take up all of the old gymnastics facility.
  15. Hmm, I know that my uncle was born at St. Joseph's in the late 1940s...are you sure it wasn't there?
  16. The mall is now known as TEJAS CENTER, which opened in 2003. It is at the corner of Texas Avenue (BS-6) and Villa Maria Rd. (FM 1179). In 2003 or 2004 the enclosed mall plus the vacant Montgomery Ward was leveled to build a new H-E-B.
  17. Recently I've been wondering about the now-defunct Manor East Mall. I have memories of passing it when I had dental appointments of a child, but never went inside until 2000. The exterior memories include a dated pylon with a pinwheel logo and a listing of long-defunct stores including Krystal Nails and some computer training place. Bealls, Jo-Ann Fabrics, 50 Off Store, a sign that was presumably from the old theater (near McDonald's), Family Dollar, the ancient Montgomery Ward (two level or no?), and Hastings and a strip mall (built in the early 1990s). I remember going inside once in 2000 to go to Animal World to get stuff for our new kitten we bought earlier that day. It was blue cinderblocks inside with small windows lining the sides. It had benches and was a maze to get to the pet store. Presumably, much of the walls were drywalled-off storefronts. There was an abandoned Wal-Mart behind the mall. I don't know if it connected or not. Does anyone have pictures/memories of the old mall?
  18. Yes, before Golden Wok was Golden Chick, a fried chicken place featuring (on the facade) a chicken wearing glasses. Next to that was a Texaco (a nice one), torn down for a Walgreen's. And Oakwood was originally 5th grade, but they changed it to 5th and 6th. The dog on the Pooh's Park sign stayed for a long while, even after the site was redeveloped.
  19. The pictures posted with the anchor facades don't seem to work. Does anyone have a floorplan of the mall?
  20. Here are some old pics of what you want: (scroll down a bit on the page) http://mallsofamerica.blogspot.com/search?q=houston+galleria
  21. No, it's the Corporate building. It was very visible from the Interstate, had large windows, the modern block FOLEY'S, and about 6-8 stories (more or less since the interstate was elevated).
  22. I'd often drive with my family on vacations to Houston, and one thing I fondly remember...besides the many Service Merchandises (Merchandisi?), there was the Foley's building. Sadly, when Federated decided to buy it out, the office building closed and is no longer visible. The Foley's sign is gone, making it just another faceless skyscraper. Anyone remember it/have a picture?
