  1. They do this sort of thing elsewhere in the country. I'm in CT now and the Big Y gives out these bonus "coins" when you shop. They also double and even triple coupons. Maybe they do that somewhere in Houston, but nowhere that I shop. It's not even worth cutting coupons in Houston, it seems.
  2. Geez, Red, would you stop already? that is SOOOO obnoxious. Those people should really behave better. Keep their petty, obnoxious little ideas to themselves. Don't they have any sense of decorum?
  3. I guess their motive is... making money from people watching their news shows. It doesn't surprise me that they're ready to push a candidate from their preferred party under the bus in order to do so. Especially one who just lost an election, and is generally viewed as a joke anyway.
  4. Nice. Anyone want to predict what her next move is?
  5. Very nice speech by McCain. Too bad his crowd lacked his class, and booed him when he suggested they all work together with Obama to help our country. They booed him! Unbelievable.
  6. Cry me a river, Niche. I see plenty of disproportionate allocation of resources happening in this country, but it's not in the direction you're talking about.
  7. Obama, for the same reasons Memebag cited, and more. Plus, I really respect Obama.
  8. This is the biggest load of bull that being shoveled out there. Nobody is giving money from the rich to the poor. What do you think is going to happen? Poor people are going to line up to get checks, made out to them, care of the rich? What's going to happen is that the middle class is going to get a tax break, just like the rich have gotten for the past 8 years. The rich will likely lose that tax break. Hey, they had their chance at it, and guess what, the economy fell apart, in case you haven't heard. So much for the rest of your economic theory. Nobody is giving money out to the poor. It's not spread the wealth, it's spread the opportunity to achieve wealth. But of course, I'm wasting my time here; you haven't listened yet, why would you listen now.
  9. Hear, hear... to all of that. I'm glad we agree on something, Mark!
  10. Fine Mark, insert your own language if you don't like my choice of words. The point is that these are negatives that he has been criticized for. So, so what if the same were true of McCain - Palin. You are STILL missing the point.
  11. Rice won't change their name. They will acquire a medical school.
  12. Half of that is true of half of the old white men in the Senate.
  13. Something to think about... I just got this in an e-mail: Obama/Biden vs McCain/Palin, what if things were switched around?....think about it. Would the country's collective point of view be different? Ponder the following: What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, including a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter? What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review? What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class? What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee? What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards? What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married? What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to painkillers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization? What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard? What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five?(The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.) What if Obama couldn't read from a teleprompter? What if Obama was the one who had 20 year military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes? What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management problem? What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distrib ution? What if the Obamas had adopted a white child? You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality,do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are? This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference. Educational Background: Barack Obama: Columbia University - B.A. Political Science with a Specialization in International Relations. Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude Joseph Biden: University of Delaware - B.A. in History and B.A. in Political Science. Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.) vs. John McCain:United States Naval Academy - Class rank: 894 of 899 Sarah Palin: Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study University of Idaho - 2 semesters -journalism Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in Journalism Education isn't everything, but this is about the two highest offices in the land as well as our standing in the world. You make the call.
  14. I can't believe what I'm reading here. But let's say for the sake of argument that you folks are right, and Obama is a "secret Muslim." If so, great. When he's elected next week, and we have a chance to see what he accomplishes over the next four years, you might finally understand that most Muslims are god-fearing, family-loving, hard-working, decent human beings. At least, that what I imagine someone with good Christian values would be willing to accept and believe.
  15. Well, I don't think that's fair. I am respectful of all my students and I recognize the challenges they face, including work and family.
  16. I may be getting off topic here, but I have a problem with students' attitude toward college. This is not a new thing; it was like this when I was in college too: going to class in pajamas, or flip-flops; showing up late; missing exams with a lame excuse... this is totally acceptable behavior at many colleges. I think it keeps students in an extended state of adolescence, at exactly the time they should be learning to be professional adults. I am a professional with a Ph.D., and it makes me absolutely crazy to be sharing my expertise with someone who is lounging in his chair, flip-flops kicked off, computer open, and a solitaire game going. It's totally disrespectful. And it teaches the student nothing about professional conduct. I guess I'm an old fart, but I'd like to see college students show up for class dressed in business casual, and behaving accordingly. I think they'd learn more.
  17. Interesting ideas here. I would love to see the kind of interdisciplinary curriculum you all are proposing. I teach a rather esoteric subject, and I am under no illusions about that: I know that students don't NEED to know the meat and potatoes of what I teach. So I make sure that my courses include writing, reading, critical thinking, politics, current events, and social issues such as feminism. These topics are raised for consideration and discussion, and linked to the more esoteric subject I teach. I am continually shocked by how poorly college students write... and I don't just mean grammatical errors. I mean that they cannot express their meaning through their writing. This is why literature and composition MUST be taught in high school. You can't write well if you don't read well-written books and journals. And if you can't write well enough to express your thoughts or your argument, you won't succeed at many jobs. The difficulty is in creating a replicable curriculum that combines all these topics: civics, ethics, history, government, and also demands reading, writing, and critical thinking. They are hard things to measure through standardized testing.
  18. I didn't see any mention of Ayers in either article. I'm not saying he's not in the video, but I don't see it there. I don't find it surprising at all that he has close allies on the Palestinian side. He has said all along that he speaks to people on both sides of an issue and is a "uniter."
  19. wow, you're right. I DO think that the lives of a bunch of kids aren't important! What a bad person I am. And what bad people all Democrats are. Here we are, not caring if anyone kills children. Thanks TJ for setting me straight, and providing that depth of insight.
  20. I think the house looks beautiful... I love the floors, and all the light. The yard looks nice too. I hope you can sell it despite the state of the market right now.
  21. Why shouldn't it be a headline when a couple of crazies plot to kill a Presidential candidate? I am so sick of people whining about the media everytime the media doesn't say exactly what they happen to think.
  22. I think the real culprit is that the project had such a silly name. "Turnberry Tower." Who would want to live there? It sounds like a new kind of Captain Crunch cereal.
