  1. any update on if they caught this guy. I'm in the general area where this happened, would have been only a block away at that exact time (I normally drive through there around 9:15-9:45 on tuesdays) but my shoulder was hurt so i stayed home last week. I'll definitely be looking for this guy when i'm in the area tonight. I only live like 8 blocks away in the first place.
  2. I'm okay with OC and DC, haven't made over to the third one yet. If i couldn't walk to OC I don't think i'd go there nearly as much. Decapos is really good. I love their pea salad and carrot soufle. I bought an apple pie from them for christmas and everyone loved it. I would say gas is rather expensive in the heights (sometimes the valero on studewood has a good price, but will not go under 1.49 for some reason) Actually, come to think of i haven't really been anywhere in the Heights i thought was absurdly expensive for what you get (still many places left to visit though). South of I-10.... different story. just to throw it out there.... I like King Biscuit for value.
  3. might have to walk over there and check out there breakfast tacos this weekend.
  4. dang, i live in the Alexan, on the bayou side, and i didnt' even know the bridge was on fire (you can see if from just outside my apartment). I believe they will have to build an all new bridge, that thing is in rough shape. I'm a bum and never took any pics of the progress (sorry guys), but it seems like the concrete is donefor quite a ways down from Oxford. Does anyone know if they care if you ride your bikes on the parts that are done already? I might try to ride as much of the trail as possible friday. Does anyone know of plans for lighting and etc. on the trail?
  5. I hear good things about the pies at Decapos. I've had a few of their deserts which were really tasty. I might have to try their Dutch apple pie. They are in the heights Studewood @ 11th street.
  6. Ive worked downtown for a bit over two years now, and i love the tunnels. I'm baffled how anyone could not like them, in the summer i can take a quick hike to the Park shops to grab some dumplings at Doozo and i'm not a sweaty mess nor have i been struck by a car when i get back... awesome. I don't think the retail in the tunnels really takes away from the street level either, because there would just be more stuff closed on the street level at night. I want stuff on the street level that will be open late.
  7. what does Wolfes prices run for slacks / dress shirts?
  8. I love how you say there is nothing to do in shrevport after you leave the casino. There are a bunch of clubs/bars that stay open until 4-6am everyday in Shreveport. What do you want them to have... a late night museum of natural science? Please tell me that you didn't get out of the casino at like 3PM or something. There are plenty of table games in the Shreveport casinos. I do agree that the truckstop video poker/slot machine places are rediculous, as well as the giant slotmachine/video poker Mecca inside the Louisiana Downs. That is why I like the casino's in shreveport, they have the right feel(lots of table games, wild craps tables, free drinks, tradition cocktail waitresses). They also have good entertainment come in on a regular basis. btw, Last time i was in shrevport i went to El Dorado and they have a whole section now devoted to poker (mostly Texas Hold Em') I really like this form of gambling (the casino gets there money from the rake). The rake wasn't even high (i was playing 2/5 no limit and it max'd out at $2-3) The casinos aren't very involved in having the slot machines and video poker in gas staitions and similar establishments, that would be the gas stations themselves and a gaming software/hardware company. While they might literally be losers in the since of losing at the games of video poker or slots, is it really necessary to generalize all truck drivers and others who go to the truck stop video poker places as "losers". Just because you don't like the places or that the people there aren't as wealthy or smart as you doesn't make you better than them. Jeebus... What i mean about opening casinos in galveston like shreveport's is a full service casino, with the right feel (as mentioned above). Entertainment venues and restaurants connected to the casino. Also having nice atriums, art, etc. I feel that something like that could bring a lot of positive things to the island.
  9. remember that shreveports casinos are actually riverboats...
  10. It doesn't just work for LSU. Louisiana Tech University is quite a good school as well as Centenary (private school). And you can not possibly say that shreveport is worse, or the same as it was in the 80s-90s. Because it is simply not true. But your right, giving people college educations is a very negative thing, I mean how dare Louisiana try to crawl out of their placement as one of the poorest states in the nation. I think casino's could be a very positive thing for Galveston, as long as they were done correctly (like shreveport, not lake charles). Eeyore.
  11. Shreveport isn't that bad of a place. The louisiana Boardwalk is a fairly nice place to go, and ever expanding, lots of public parks, and the bum situation downtown (close to the casino's at least) is minimal. I guess technically Bossier City is the one that is nicer, but the casino's definitely saved that town. (in the late 80s-early90s people were leaving shrevport by the hordes). The new Youree Drive devolpement definitely shows signs of a growing community. And Texasvines... just so you know... this business that you say doesn't help out, the tax profits help pay for thousands of kids in Louisiana to go to college... Oh how i enjoyed free college.
  12. i saw that they had the framing setup, probably laying the concrete today at oxford. I however forgot that it is now dark when i get home. I'll see if I can't get a good picture this weekend.
  13. This is good to know, I was wondering where i should get my paint/body work done. Is there a good exhaust shop in the heights?
  14. lots of work done just south of 6th at Oxford, appears to be all the way to the first bridge over the bayou/ditch. I'll get a better look tomorrow.
  15. Well, as i had feared, IKE prevented my move in. Has anyone driven by the Alexan and did you see any significant damage? Thanks, Curt
  16. forget the kids! jk, is there a place where adults can use the gym? I'm looking for somewhere that has an open gym session so I can play on a spring floor. <-- ninja
  17. supposed to be moving in this weekend, unwanted guest Ike might prevent a few days. I'll be a hood resident soon though!
  18. i just hope nobody steals my doors or roof of my wrangler!
  19. If you wait and re list it in the summer at a lower price... i might know somebody interested...
  20. Yeah, I'm sure people use the front seat of their cars as a safety deposit box in many neighborhoods. I'm pretty familiar with the neighborhood, I was going there 2-3 times a week anyway. So if anyone sees a grown man riding around a brown and tan BMX bike, thats me house shopping!
  21. while i don't make a habbit of doing that (i drive a jeep so i know i'm an easy target) I've heard some mixed opinions about the parking garage at alexan. I've heard that strings of break ins happen, but then they beef up security and they stop for a while. Do you speak from experience or from word of mouth?
  22. so any suggestions on the order of restore/renovation (with re-appraisal in mind)? I'm thinking foundation, electric, plumbing, sewage, are the ones that i want to make sure to have a permit for. Those are also the things I won't be doing myself.
  23. is refinishing considered an improvement? I mean paint, drywall work, floor refinishes, those aren't exactly improvements... I'm thinking i should have it reappraised before i do any "cosmetic" improvements???
  24. Well I have decided to put off purchasing a home for around 9months to a year while my wife finishes grad school, but I am now officially moving to the Heights next week. I'll be moving into the Alexan Heights. It sucks to have to rent, but at least i'll now be in the neighborhood and i'll be able to ride my bike all over, and hopefully find a good deal sometime next may/june. See ya around the 'hood. Curt
