  1. The grass is being pulled up and stacked. If this actually broke ground, for civil site work, we should see some digging real soon!
  2. Here's a postcard that I've never seen before. The postcard includes further information about the old nursing home. Cool history here! 3. Found this artsy, drawing post card on Ebay. Pretty cool! Never even seen this before. St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital Texas Children's Hospital Texas Heart Institute Operated jointly in the Texas Medical Center Houston
  4. Found this very rare matchbook cover on Ebay. The Shamrock McCarthy Center Houston, Texas / World's Finest-South's Largest.
  5. My friend went to an event at 1MC today and snapped this photo for me. Awesome perspective!! Does anyone else notice Parcel A is being worked on? The latest I've heard it's supposed to become a temporary surface lot. Will be interesting to see what they're doing here!! Building signage for TMC3 Garage spotted!! I'm so glad they kept the name TMC3 somewhere within the development.
  6. I was looking at a Rice University yearbook dated 1977 and came across a cool advertisement. Did anyone by any chance eat here? Any memories or photos? I really like the artwork! Marini's Gaucho House (Parrillada) 7525 Main Phone: (713) 795-4382 Houston, Texas 77030 (Just steps from Astrodome - Medical Center - Marriott - Shamrock - Astroworld) Another Service To You From Marini's Family
  7. This week after hearing the news I decided to google Best Hospitals for Psychiatry. The Mennninger Clinic has been rated in the top 10 for 33 years. Very strong hospital. I've never even heard of, or forgot about, McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA. The McLean Hospital is ranked #1 in Adult Specialty. Would anyone know what's the big difference in ratings? The Menninger Clinic is already a world-class hospital. I wonder what McLean Hospital does differently? I did a little research. The hospital opened in 1811. Seems like it's very much older.
  8. I was researching Carolyn Homoiselle Grant this week. I forgot that The Fay School on North Post Oak Road was named after her. Carolyn Homoiselle Grant married Ernest Bel Fay and was renamed Carolyn Grant-Fay. Carolyn's father was the owner of John F. Grant Lumber Co. and was doing well for himself. One internet article mentioned the family estate was 52-acres that was located at Holcombe & Bertner. When Carolyn Grant-Fay sold the family land in the area she made an agreement with TMC to build a park in the redevelopment. Now, the park is named Grant-Fay Park and is located at 1368 Holcombe Blvd. After my research on HAIF, there is appears there is left over Harris Gully in the park. I really need to go check it out! The HAIF poster states: At the north end of this park, about 15 feet from Holcombe, is a 20 foot deep gully that extends the full length of the park, west to east. It looks like the Texas Medical Center Garage 2 was built over the family estate? The address of the garage is 6740-6798 Bertner Ave. City of Houston Planning and Development Department Archaeological & Historical Commission Buildings by Sam H. 9. McGovern Historical Center posted this aerial photograph of the Naval Hospital Houston/Veteran's Hospital Houston On Marlborough Drive. Looking across Old Spanish Trail, you can see some of the old airport runways. Very cool!!
  10. Did this really start?!? Hasn't that corner parcel been sitting vacant for nearly 30 years? Finally some Pierce Junction development activity!! Only if it would spread across the (freeway) into the Willowbend/Buffalo Speedway/Holmes Road territory. Maybe this will be the catalyst to start further development in the area? I don't think the luxury town homes are taking the full 20 acres. I believe they are only using the end-cap space? There was once a proposed City of Houston mixed-income development proposed for the site. I wonder if this is apart of it? I doubt it though. I would really like to see very expensive homes here Let's go!!
  11. Found this very, very cool advertisement from a construction material business. I was looking in the Rice University yearbook in 1955 and came across this. South End Building Materials Co. Ready Mix Concrete Efficient Service Sand-Gravel-Cement Plants to Serve You: South Houston... MI-3328 4830 Kirby Drive... LY-9131 South Main Street... MA-8379 General Office: 5102 Galveston Road Houston, Texas MI-3328
  12. Hines is letting the bank use the meeting facilities at 600 Travis. I haven't been inside since the ZC renovations. Very nice!! One of the conference rooms on the second floor is called IM Pei. Awesome!!
  13. Found this cool building in an old newspaper and thought I would share the information. Were Pig Stand Restaurants and Pig'n Whistle Restaurants owned by the same family? From the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated March 26, 1937: Pig'n Whistle Come Inside! We have rearranged and enlarged our seating arrangements. Come inside and enjoy the warmth and goodness of our service and don't worry about tipping. 3018 South Main Street (written as 3018 So. Main)
  14. I (possibly) found the Colburn Bros. Oil Field Hauling business! Another HAIF member, said this in regarding to the discussion about the Old Main Street Road: During the 70's, 80's & early 90's the lot at the southwest end of Old Main was used by a pipe fabricator/supplier. The several roads you see in the sat photo are the service roads used in the pipe yard. I went onto Google Earth and focused in. There indeed seems to be (both) a truck business and a pipe fabricator a decade later. Now, a little confusing. The Colburn Bros. trucking company was more so located in between Holmes Road and South Main Street. The pipe fabricator seems to be more located on Old Main Street Road, towards Domain Privee Casino & Residences. I know the address 11920 OMSR is really far down OMSR. This would be considered The End Of Old Main Street Road. I wonder if the pipe fabricators and the trucking company are apart of the same company? Maybe Colburn Bros. did it all! In 1957 you can see a bunch of trucks. In 1964 the truck yard is gone, but there is material in the parcel above. This 1978 aerial photograph provides a clearer image into the pipe fabricator/supplier. I believe that's the case, at least.
  15. I have always heard William Marsh Rice owned and operated a dry goods stand. I believe I found it! Talk about a needle in a haystack. This is cool history! 16. It appears there is a cemetery within this historic elderly campus. Union Valley Cemetery 8304 Knight Road Houston, TX 77054 Can anyone verify this? I wonder if they (or have) buried their own residents here? Very, very cool campus! It's apart of the historic Texas Medical Center-area development. The buildings and campus was the only development on Knight Road! 1945: 1953: 1953 with some historic streets; South Main Street, Old Main Street Road, Knight Road, Almeda Road, Old Spanish Trail, Holmes Road. 17. Noticed this Loopnet listing be added, and then quickly removed a few weeks later. Did the property get immediately sold or did the sellers withdraw? 20. wow!! I happen to stumble on the original Kinkaid School when it was located in Margaret Kinkaid's home! This is history right here. I wonder if anyone on HAIF has any grandparents who went here? Or maybe great, great grandparents? Edit: From a Houston City Directory dated 1919. Kinkaid Primary School - 3119 San Jacinto. Miss Margt Kinkad, prin.
  21. Finally found an address for this old school house! Sometimes, they only give the streets, and not the direct address. These old "school houses" are really neat. This is an HISD school that was active in the 1910s to the 1920s. I think. Booker T. Washington School, corner Bingham and Colorado Sts. Washing (Booker T.) School - 1707 Bingham. E.O. Smith, prin; R. T. Green, Narciss Hill, Esther S. Kennard, Bessie H. Love, Mamie B. Milligan, Lillie B. Mosely, Maggie Overton and Carrie Washington, tchrs; Irwin Cheeseborough, janitor.

  23. Awesome!! Found a never-heard-before Amusement Park/Amusement Center in Houston! (Well, just outside of Houston.) I was reading the newspaper The Daily Sun (Goose Creek, Tex.) dated August 28, 1945 and came across a business advertisement for Sam Houston Amusement Center on Wallisville Rd. So cool!! Anyone have memories of this place? Or know anything about it? Dance To The Music of Grady Hester and His Boys Wednesday, August 29 and Sunday, September 2 At East Harris County's Finest Dancing Place Sam Houston Amusement Center 3 Miles East of Highlands On the Wallisville Road Dancing Every Wednesday- Saturday Sunday
  24. Looks fantastic!! The ground floor is simply amazing. Much needed renovations! The building signage is Pavilion Tower II, but I believe the official name is Pavilion for Women Tower II. Where does the name Main Tower come from?
  25. Found a great photo of the exterior of the building. Thought I would share. From Rice University's The Campanile yearbook dated 1924.
