  1. Edit: Also known as, in the 1910s, as Girl's Industrial School. Regarding the different addresses. I found this on a forum: My 1955 Bellaire City Directory showed Burnett-Bayland Home at 5500 Clarewood and I remember it being situated on a large piece of property at the corner of Clarewood (a residential street) and Chimney Rock Rd. (one of Bellaire's main thoroughfares). My 1965 Bellaire City Directory showed the address as 6100 Chimney Rock.(Remodeled, I believe the location of the entrance changed.) The orphanage closed and I'm pretty sure the property is now a bootcamp for troubled youth. Girls From Broken Homes Are Given Cheerful Lift Mary Burnett School at Bellaire Warmly Receives Orphans and Innocent Victims of Wrecked Domestic Establishments, Ushers Them Into the Happy Cluster of Joyous Youngsters and at Last They Begin to Unfold Just as Truly as a Bud Suddenly Opens Broken Homes! Broken hearts! It is the innocent victims of the broken homes and hearts that she Mary Burnett School for Girls picks up and gives a normal. happy girlhood, teaching them ideals and work that will make them useful citizens in after years. Miss Ethel Alice Claxton, superintendent of the school at Bellaire, asserts-- 1: Cornelia Ennis Cargill Cottage, constructed in 1917, one of the units of a remarkable school for girls in the environs of Houston. Two classes of girls are in the school, orphans and wards of the court. 2: Gray Cottage, built in 1914, the first unit of the school which now houses 160 young girls. The building also contains the school offices as well as quarters for a number of the girls. “All of the girls,” The superintendent does not believe in high walls and board fences, with watchdog methods. 3: Wash day at the school. The girls do all their own laundering, with modern machine. Indeed, the student take a four months course in laundry work, showing one the great practical phase of the school. 4: Miss Ethel Alice Claxton, superintendent of the Mary Burnett School for Girls at Bellaire, who assets that “each girl is an individual something very human that we believe we can change into a wonderful personality.” 5: The famous “shack,” which was built in 1916, when the school was filled to overflowing. It has served many purposes.
  2. I was reading the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated April 27, 1950 and came across a very cool home! The man who started the construction empire WS Bellows!! WS Bellows has worked with countless projects in the Texas Medical Center and even has a street named after the family. I wonder the architect of this West University home? Was Mr. Bellows the original owner/family to live there? Citizens In The News -- Warren S. Bellows. 1728 North Boulevard, appointed chairman of the Harris County port commission, succeeding Wilson Saville, 3217 Groveland, who retired.
  3. Photo. Houston Infirmary building exterior. The Infirmary is identified by a sign on the roof. The long, two-story building features a balcony and has a fence separating it from the road. A few people stand outside. The Infirmary, located at 1008 Washington Ave.
  4. wow!! I've never heard of this and thought I would share. I was reading the newspaper The Texas Jewish Herald dated September 13, 1928 and came across a cool business advertisement. The ad was for The Big S located on Main Street Road at the Bridge. In 1928, are they speaking about South Main & Braeswood at the bayou? Or would they be speaking of Old Main Street Road? Cool piece of history. Would love to know more. At Sundown Meet Me At The Big S Main Street Road at the Bridge You'll Like This Place Like An Old Friend Under Personal Management of Chas. E. 5. I'm not sure if you're still reading @almadenmike but I found the building in question! Thanks for Ross for hinting at the building earlier in the thread. This is cool!! Amazing. Architects were Sanguinet, Staats, & Gottlieb. Wyatt C. Hedrick wasn't a partner at that time? From the newspaper The Houston Post. dated December 30, 1917: The New Convent of the Good Shepherd Cornerstone Is To be Laid This Afternoon With Ceremony, Vicar - General Kiwin to Officiate. --- The site selected for the home comprises 10 acres of land on the Richmond road, just six blocks from the end of the Montrose street car line. It is within easy access of the city, yet its location offers the seclusion necessary for an institution of this kind. The house of the Good Shepherd has no racial or denomination lines. Catholic, Jew, Gentile; any race or creed are received in the home without being questioned and without being required to be embrace the Catholic religion. The same--
  6. I believe I discovered an earlier building than their Richmond & Montrose location. Anyone have photos, or additional details about this? From the The Houston Post. dated June 2, 1915: Business Meeting of Ladies' Auxiliary. There will be a called business meeting f the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Sisters of the Good Shepherd this morning at 10 o'clock at the convent, 1511 Chenevert street. Arrangements will be made for a card party which the auxiliary will give Tuesday, June 8, for the benefit of the home. All members re urged to be in attendance at this meeting.

  8. I recently discovered these old 1960 apartments in the Greenway Plaza neighborhood. wow!! I would post a picture but unfortunately it's watermarked. Does anyone have an image they can share? Who was the architect on this very strange, bizarre multifamily complex?
  9. Can anyone guess when this storage building will be redeveloped? High profile corner of Braeswood and South Main. I could see a small condo project here. I believe the parcel is too small for a multifamily. There is a planned Hilton Homewood Suites Hotel Houston Medical Center going up across the street at 7755 South Main Street. Website: https://www.publicstorage.com/self-storage-tx-houston/821.html
  10. Thought I would create a thread on this 1962 condo high-rise in River Oaks. I searched and there was only a handful of mentions in random threads. Has anyone lived here? Is it a good place to live? Who was the original architect and builder?
  11. Terry Home in Missouri City in 1962 @Tumbleweed_Tx
  12. Does anyone recall this awesome mixed-use project? It's from a Gensler employee named Jorge A. Tiscareno. Looks like he's now a director at PBK. I haven't seen this particular project posted on HAIF, but his other renderings in his portfolio has been posted used for years. Very cool find!! The portfolio is dated 2013, so any proposed projects at that time probably never made it. I believe I know exactly where this is located! Either one of two areas. Houston Methodist's surface lot and the cluster of old buildings on South Braeswood & Bertner. Or the vacant parcel on South Braeswood & Fannin Let's get it built!! 13. TMC Helix Park adding more and more trees!! It's hard to take photos of buildings without trees being in the way. This development is simply amazing!! The lime green pathway was unexpected but awesome! One Discover Way: Parcel G site work continues! Collaborative Building: Lime Green pathway!! Two Discovery Way looks to be elevating!! What exactly is going on here? Is the tower under construction? Helix Park, Section 1: Helix Park, section 2. Can you spot anything!?!? Helix Park, section 3. Helix Park, section 4. Trees and more trees!! Mixed-Use Garage:
  14. Is it just me or did about a 4-foot section of grass/debris get mowed/cleaned? The brown section spans the entire length of Buffalo Speedway. Maybe they were cleaning up against a debris violation? Also, I believe the red CenterPoint Energy flags are new. The flags start to appear after the circular roundabout.
  15. Did these containers arrive at the site this week? Portable Toilets to follow? Could be a great sign leading to boots on the ground!
  16. Thanks for all the updates! On Friday, I was unable to take the Redline back home and I noticed your thread. Here's the photos I took of the construction by Central Station Main. You should have stopped by 601 Travis and said hi. We'll get together soon.
  17. One of my HAIF buddy's gave me the idea of this thread. Thought I would create the thread as the TMC is considered a Central Business District. Does anyone know the multifamily occupancy/demand for the Texas Medical Center area? I know there are a lot of old, 1960s/1980s apartments situated near the TMC. Only a matter of time until a developer buys the garden-style complex and builds a 5 to 8 story apartment wrap. The TMC multifamily market is probably, mostly, based on a few key streets. Westridge, El Paseo, Brompton, Cambridge, El Mundo, Fannin, Holly Hall, etc. I'm surprised the TMC area does not share the same market-hype that The Heights/Montrose does with all these new medical districts popping up. The area to watch is Southern Fannin. Pierce Junction is practically vacant.
  18. Did anyone else notice on the Greater Houston Partnership calendar did not include the annual State of Texas Medical Center in September? I emailed GHP and received a great reply. The TMC date has not been settled yet. TBD. Cannot wait until the event! Imagine the slideshows displaying future TMC developments. * I hope TMC BioPort is involved. https://houston.org/events
  19. I have an address! I was able to investigate it due to the pharmacy building signage on a photo I found online. Thigpen's Pharmacy was located inside of The Houston Clinic building. Amazing, because I'm not sure actual address has been posted online. Every mention of the clinic I saw was "Main & Pease" but I never saw an address attached. Only on HAIF! Apparently these photos were taken in the 1950s. Awesome building by the way!! Do we know who the architect was? https://www.mrt.com/news/houston-texas/bayou-city-history/article/Throwback-Thursday-to-Houston-s-past-6555118.php#photo-14936702 Thigpen's Pharmacy was located inside of the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated May 11, 1950:
  20. I was looking on Worthpoint for historical Houston items and came across this cool club. The club was called Roulette Club located 3701 Kirby Drive. Very cool, because I've never seen the original facade! Anyone know the date to this? I'd say 1970s?
  21. Edit: Split this into a new thread. There is two Masonic Temples in Downtown. Masonic Temple at Main and McKinney, circa 1927.
  22. Today I was searching around for old hospitals and came across a very cool address! Thought I would share with HAIF. I am confused. Did the block 9200 South Main Street (or Main Street Boulevard) exist in the 1920s? I looked on a few maps of the 1920s and 1930s. One map showed South Main Street stopping at Holcombe Blvd, while Old Main Street Road was the only road going further. Other maps showed South Main Street as being a paved roadway. Which one was it?!?! The address in the thread title could be wrong. This might be 9218 South Main Street. I found the details in the publication Harris County Medical Society, Woman's Auxiliary Year Book Program dated September, 1926. Year Book Woman's Auxiliary To The Harris County Medical Society Organized April 1919 Federated State May 1919 Houston, Texas 1926-1927 The doctor's addresses contained the following: Cruse, Mrs. P.R. - 208 Sul Ross, H. 4502 Denman, Mrs. P.R. - 1220 Southmore, H. 0417 Devoti, Mrs. J.J. - Broadway and Alexander, W. 1658 Dunman, Mrs. T.E. - 711 Hawthorne, H. 1696 Durha, Mrs. M.E. - 438 W. 21st St., T. 5946 Ellis, Mrs. J.C. - 1301 Marshal, H. 3237 Elliot, Mrs. M.L. - 9218 S. Main, W. 5799 Foster, Mrs. J.H. - 1708 River Oaks, H. 6791 8 years after, in 1934, the house was occupied by Mrs. Greenwood. Very interesting, because I think this is the source of the internet's wrong information regarding the location of Greenwood's Sanitarium which is (actually) located at 7308 Old Main Street Road. I believe, to my research, these are different families. I do know there was a James Greenwood Senior, and a James Greenwood Junior. Maybe this is the one of the wives? According to TSHA, Greenwood, James, Sr. was married to Ella Harris. Definitely not James Greenwood Senior! https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/greenwood-james-sr From the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated November 23, 1934: As the regular meeting of the E.B. L.S. Last Monday, the pledges invited all of the active members to an Open House which will be given at the home of Mary Greenwood, 9218 Main Street. 23. wow! This might be the most clear, detailed photo of Sivils' Drive-In Restaurant I've ever seen! Cool history here.
