  1. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated November 1, 1961 and came across this business advertisement for Fountain of Youth Car Bath & Auto Clinic located at 11221 South Post Oak Road near South Main Street. Does anyone ever take their car here for service or a car wash? Looking on Google Maps, there is a car repair shop at the current location. I'm sure the building has changed ownership half a dozen times since 1961. Or, I wonder, if this is the same family ownership after all these decades? Maybe the son of the owner runs it now? 2. Finally researched this massive sports complex. Looks like it has gone through a few transformations and is now jointly-owned. The 75 acre (now 55 acre) sports field was developed by the Stella Link Redevelopment Authority. https://southcampus-under-construction.squarespace.com/history In 1998, a number of local families personally guaranteed a bank loan so that SLRA could purchase 75 acres of land just east of Stella Link Boulevard, just south of the 610 South Loop. South Campus was born. The complex is also located off of South Main Street (Highway 90.) Using the McGovern Campus Park as a model, SLRA sold 12 acres at the northwest corner of the original South Campus tract to a group that founded and built the Emery Weiner School. At the other end of the tract, a smaller portion of the land was sold for the development of the St. Catherine’s Montessori School. In 2003, the South Campus Sports Association was formed as a separate section 501(c)(3) organization by four area youth sports leagues—West University Little League, Braes Bayou Little League, West University Softball Association, and the Near Town Soccer Club—with the singular purpose of purchasing and developing the remaining acreage. Later in 2003, the Southwest Football League and Houston Youth Lacrosse joined the South Campus family. Now, more than a decade and a half later, as a result of thousands of volunteer hours of planning, fundraising, and execution, the 55-acre South Campus Sports Complex provides real fields of dreams for more than 5,000 Houston-area children annually, providing fully equipped, state-of-the-art, lighted facilities for youth baseball, soccer, softball, football, and lacrosse practices and games. * 6 baseball fields * 5 softball fields * 4 soccer fields and 3 futsol courts * 3 football/lacrosse fields and press boxes * 3 concessions stand and restroom facilities
  3. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated February 27, 1957 and came across an article featuring the golf course. The Sharpstown Women’s Golf Association is co-operating with other women’s golf groups of the Houston area and with the Swing Club (a division of United Volunteers Services) in a drive to build a nine hole Pitch and Putt Golf Course at the Veterans Administration hospital in Houston at Holcombe and Almeda. Physical therapist state that such a course would be extremely helpful to veterans recuperating in the hospital, providing exercise and development of manual skills. To provide funds for the constriction of this golf course, women golfers of the Houston area are conducting a sale of tickets for a prize drawing, with all proceeds going to the Veterans’ course. On March 2, Mrs. Libby Allen and Mrs. C.D. Combs, representing the Sharpstown Women’s Golf Association, will appear at the golf links of the Sharpstown Country Club from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to sell tickets at $1.00 apiece. Drawing for the prizes will be held on April 30. First prize will be a Cushman electric golf buggy valued at $1,000.

  5. After 2 years we finally have movement. A waste water application permit was pulled yesterday.
  6. I just found out that small park located in the front of the Texas Women's Hospital Campus is actually a city-cited park called Fannin-Greenbriar Triangle located at 7898 Fannin Street. I thought it was just a small green space area belonging to the hospital. Didn't think it was an official city park. Also looks like it's a protest spot, AKA First Amendment Expression. https://www.houstontx.gov/parks/pdfs/FreeSpeechArea/Fannin-Greenbriar Triangle.pdf These areas are open to users for exercise of First Amendment rights during park hours. Users must register with HPARD Permits Office in order to reserve the area in advance. Although not a requirement of the area's use, it is recommended that all users register to avoid conflicts.

  12. Expedited commercial review permit for the whopping 642,984 SF parking garage was pulled yesterday. I wonder if this will complete the Greenbriar/Braeswood campus? In due time, the single-story child care center will be demolished for something taller.
  13. Site for sale. 14 acres total. Sad to see Alexandria Real Estate has backed out. I guess they put all their money into that new Bio Tech campus in The Woodlands. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/1615-S-Loop-W-Houston-TX/27879681/
  14. Here's an irrelevant, but interesting tidbit these '53 aerials show. I've mentioned to several friends my age that there was a race track in Stafford, roughly where the Southwest Freeway intersects with Highway 90A. They don't remember it. Well, it appears in the next photo. I barely remember it as a very dilapidated wooden structure with pealing white paint and (I think) black trim. It may have hosted motorcycle racing and dog racing, possibly other things, too. It was certainly going to the dogs when I saw it. http://wateringholdclubhouse.blogspot.com/2015/05/
  15. I just learned about this museum! My friend and I love exploring different museums in town. Cool place to go? https://www.czechcenter.org/

  17. I noticed EMA does not include Texas in their portfolio section on their website. I wonder why? They have some very large, expensive, projects here. They should at least include the famous TMC Helix Park development on their website. Maybe they can loop it into their life science section? I wonder if they would ever open a satellite office in Houston specializing in healthcare/life sciences? We sure do have the industry to support it!
  18. I found South Main Airport on the 1950 Sanborn map. On the map you can see the 3 hangars and the office & school building. On the map the address appears to be 9100A South Main Street. Actually, the airport is in between 9000 and 9100B South Main. I'll assume the airport was at 9100A South Main. I tried searching around for that particular address and nothing pulled up. This is a map, so we must go by what is stated, 9100A South Main. I will combine this with the knowledge from airfields-freeman.com. http://www.airfields-freeman.com/tx/Airfields_TX_HoustonS.htm#maintst The 1945 AAF Airfield Directory described Houston Main Street Airport as a 108 acre L-shaped property having 3 sod runways, the longest being a 2,200' east/west strip. The field was said to have 3 hangars, the largest being a 100' x 60' wood & metal structure. Houston Main Street Airport was described as being owned & operated by private interests. According to Micheal McMurtrey, a Cessna T-50 was registered to Nierth Aero Services at Main Street Airport.

  20. Would anyone recommend the apartment complex Scotland Yard located at 2250 Holly Hall Street? It's so close to the medical center. I wonder what makes this particular complex stand out from the rest on the block. Thanks Website: https://www.scotlandyardapts.com/
