  1. Will MD Anderson via a bridge, be entering, and leaving TMC3? There are two TMC3 renderings that show a bridge extending from 1MC (or TMC3) over to the North Campus. MDACC is also doing a bridge on the opposite side of the Helix Park across OST. The other side:
  2. The 1950 edition of the Sanborn map relieved new information about the Domain Privee. wow!! Sanborn is calling it "Manor Club" and shows an address of 11083 S. Old Main St. Rd. Incredible find here. What an iconic intersection, South Main at Old Main Street.
  3. The 1950 Sanborn map has the amusement park labeled in details! The map includes the name of the rides and attractions. Playland Park Stadium is new to me. I thought that was called Playland Park Speedway? Very cool history here.
  4. wow!! The 1950 Sanborn map was a gold mine! Welch Motel Motor Court - 30 Units at 1300 Old Spanish Trail. I was searching around HAIF for information about this motor motel court and couldn't find anything.
  5. Incredible find on a 1950 Sanborn map! Miniature Golf Links On Old Spanish Trail on the corner of Speer Drive near South Main. Note the road called Speer Drive. I believe it was named after Sim L. Speer, founder of Speer Park which was located on South Main. Don't think we knew about this one. A decade later, there was a golf course and range up the street in the 7000-block of South Main.
  6. I'm confused. Looking at a 1950 Sanborn map and I see a Houston Lighting & Power Co. West Junction Power Plant located on Holcombe Blvd. I believe this is the same parcel of land that had the two Holcombe & Meyer mansions. The mansions predate the power plant? I lined it up, I see Cambridge, Staffordshire, and Holcombe. Cool find!! When was this demolished? They rebuilt on the opposite side near Fannin and Brays Bayou? There's a CenterPoint Energy Plant At 6955 Fannin Street. Current area, presumably.
  7. I just discovered this obscure motel on South Main! It was the Century Motel Motor Court located at 8803 South Main Street. Found this in the 1950 Sanborn map of the area.
  8. I just discovered this obscure motel on South Main! It was the Clover Leaf Motor - Motor & Trailer Court, 16 units. Found this in the 1950 Sanborn map of the area.
  9. Found it on Google Earth with an image capture in December 1953. There was also some confusion on where it was on. It doesn't look like Lake Island was actually located at 8301 South Main? Or the Google Earth imagery is slightly off. The surroundings on the opposite side of the street seem to match the Sanborn 1950 map. I can visibly see the Grant Motor Inn located at 8300B South Main. In front of the motor inn you can also see the Gateway Roller Rink located at 8370 South Main. The Gateway Crystal Pool is behind the skating rink. Here's a photograph of the Gateway Roller Rink. See if you can match up the shape in the above capture.
  10. There is a lot of confusion in this thread. I found a Sanborn 1950 map that shows the canals of Lake Island. Very cool!! You can also see the general landscape of the Main/OST "Y" split, and the location of the competing swimming pool Gateway Swim & Skate across the street. Note that the Gateway development is not directly across the street. Looks a little further south, according to the map. Although the Gateway Roller Rink and the Gateway Crystal Pool had different addresses. The map only seems to show the skating rink. It's possible the pool was indeed directly across the street from Lake Island. Does anyone know the name of the night club in front of Lake Island? It's supposed to be Price's Restaurant/Price's Hamburgers. Here's a vintage ad from August 1, 1947. You can see the dance pavilion.
  11. The address of 8301 South Main is sourced from two locations. One is the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated August 1, 1947 that contains an advertisement for Lake Island located at 8301-1/2 South Main. (Also told to be 8301 South Main.) Lake Island 8301 South Main - Behind Price's Restaurant. Another address source is a 1950 Sanborn map that shows the canals of Lake Island. There is indeed a building in front of the lake, which as the advertisement says, it's behind Price's Restaurant. However, the Sanborn map indicates the building is a night club. Maybe the nite club went out of business and Price's Restaurant moved in? There is also the restaurant next door with an address of 8299 South Main Street that was once a few Asian restaurants. Possibly the Lake Island ads actually meant that building instead? Not directly behind Price's Restaurant. Ho-Li Garden Restaurant At 8299 South Main St. & Kee Jan Restaurant At 8299 South Main St. Map:
  12. I was wondering if anyone on HAIF knew some information about the old 1940s/1950s restaurant near the Texas Medical Center called Price's Hamburgers, also could be named Price's Restaurant. The address is, apparently, 8301 South Main Street. The address also could have been 8299 South Main Street. Price's Hamburger's was a burger chain in Houston (and other parts of Texas?) founded by Price Lovelady. There is almost no history of this restaurant on the internet! I do not see any newspaper/magazine advertisements, pictures, menus, matchbooks, or post cards. Wondering why a chain restaurant with several locations in a big city would be so scarce? HAIF is a Houston knowledge database, and thankfully in the native Price's Hamburgers thread there is a single photo. This might be the only evidence on the internet (except for public comments/postings) that this restaurant existed. @Michelle C said: There was a Price's at the corner of Washington and Shepherd in 1958. Edit: To be clear, this is Price's Hamburgers founded by Price Lovelady. Often confused with Prince's Hamburgers, founded by Doug Prince.
  13. I was looking at the 1950 Sanborn map and discovered a nite club located at 8301 South Main Street. Anyone know what this is about? If you look right on the same parcel, you will see the canals of Lake Island located at 8301-1/2 South Main. HAIF has always been confused on the whereabouts of Lake Island. Old advertisements of the amusement lake indicated "Behind Price's Restaurant." This seems like the location of the night club. Perhaps Price's Hamburgers was also one of those restaurant clubs? Although, a dining room club is vastly different from a night club. Perhaps the night club went out of business and Price's Hamburgers (or Price's Restaurant) moved in? Or vice versa.
  14. What is this?!?! Haven't seen this on HAIF before. Although, I do admit I don't research circuses so maybe it has been discussed? I was looking at a Sanborn map from 1950 and came across the Frank Walter Circus Quarters that spanned a few blocks on Wyndale Drive (now South Braeswood Blvd.) in between Old Main Street Road (now Fannin St.) and Cecil (now Bertner Ave.) It appears that section of S. Braeswood, in the 1950s, was called Wyndale Road. Maybe the roads were shifted around? Unless if I'm not reading the map correctly. Looks like the "Texas Medical Center" circus was active in the 1930s to the 1950s. Officially established in 1932. The circus was located at, or near the present-day Houston Methodist West Pavilion Remote Parking Lot located at 1302 S. Braeswood Blvd. There was an oval horse riding ring where the present MD Anderson 1 MC building and garage is currently located- 7007 Bertner Ave. Sanborn 1950 map: From the newspaper Denton Record-Chronicle dated August 12, 1940: Texas Today By William T. Rives Associates Press Staff Once a year a gang of 5,000 skinny, impoverished kids pours out of orphan's homes, county institutions and tucbledown sracks, a long Buffalo Bayou near Houston, headed for a day at the circus. It's their own show-- the Frank Walter Circus for Underprivileged Children. Complete from roaring wild animals to sparkling red sody pop, it doesn't cost them a cent. The circus it he only show of it's kind in the county. Walter says-- Postcard from Ebay: Company letterhead on Ebay: Frank J. Walter The Original Underprivileged Children's 3-Ring Circus Greatest Show Of Its Kind On Earth Established 1932 - 5206 Montrose Boulevard Houston, Texas There's a circus history website, and in the 1960s there was an archive collection/report on the FWOUCC It's too much information to be posted. Looks like there was a total of 24 different attractions (known as cages?) at the circus. https://www.classic.circushistory.org/Bandwagon/bw-1969Nov.htm Frank was a descendent of one of the oldest families in Houston, Texas. As a boy he was greatly attracted to the Gentry Bros. Dog & Pony Show. Inspired by the performances, he tried his hand at training dogs, monkeys, horses, and ponies. After seeing Hagenbeck-Wallace and Al G. Barnes performances he decided he was going to see what he could do with wild animals. He acquired several lions and leopards and successfully trained them. He even broke a lioness, Congo, to both fight and wrestle with him in the arena. In 1932 Frank began presenting performances annually solely for the entertainment of under privileged children and inmates of children's hospitals in the Houston area. He titled his show the Frank J. Walter Original Underprivileged Children's Circus and presented one to a half dozen performances annually. We are fortunate to have one of the printed programs for the season of 1936 and the performance ran as follows: Frank J. Walter, Equestrian Director; C. G. Risley, Music Director; John Andrew, Announcer. Display No. 1: Circus Band Concert No. 2: Comedy trampoline. No. 3: Here comes the clowns: Ambrose Quadruplets, Bum Henry, Connors, and Valentino. No. 17: High Schooled and dancing horses, "Floto," "Wallace," "Frisco," "Don Juan," and "Whirlwind." Presented by Wilma Schoonover, Harry Schoonover, and A. W. Kennard. No. 18: Sensational slide for life, Al Conners. No. 19: Balancing globe, presented by the world famous Arthur Henry Duo. No. 20: The deft defying whirling-slide, Mrs. Al Connors. No. 21: Tons of entertainment, the Mighty Ruth. No. 22: Clowns: this is the last appearance of the funny fellows. No. 23: The Flying Vallentines; aerialists supreme. No. 24: Exit march, Frank J. Walter Circus Band. Ten of the Walters cages are grouped for a 1937 photograph. The cage numbers from left to right are: #16, #41, #18, #42, #21, #54, #44, #46, #19 and #45. The original 8x10 of this view, reproduced here, was autographed to Terrell M. Jacobs in 1937. To house all these wagons and animals he acquired three and a half acres of land south of Houston. On this property he constructed ten buildings. Approaching from Houston one was first greeted by a herd of concrete elephants, their trunks raised in a salute.
  15. I discovered an unknown liquor store in the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated December 20, 1957. Does anyone recall this place? Cotton Bowl, 1958 Good Luck, Rice Owls! J-E-B Liquor Store 7205 Old Main
  16. I was looking at a 1950 Sanborn map and discovered a night club located at 7133 Old Main Street Road. From the newspaper The Rice Thresher dated December 20, 1957: Cotton Bowl, 1958 Good Luck, Rice Owls! Houston's Finest Tic-Toc Lounge at 7133 Old Main
  17. I was looking at a 1950 Sanborn map and noticed an apartment located at 7215 Old Main Street Road. Anyone know the name of the apartments? Or better yet, any pictures, postcards, or matchbooks? From the newspaper The Shiner Gazette dated January 19, 1956. Pvt. Kuntschik in Germany Frankfurt, Germany-- Army Pvt. Harold R. Kuntschik, 21, whose wife, Patricia, lives at 7215 Old Main St., Houston, Texas, recently took part in a field training exercise held by the 4th Infantry Division in Germany.
  18. 20.33 acres for sale in the high-growth east Medical Center area in Houston, near TMC3 and Levit Green projects. https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/7171-Grand-Blvd-Houston-TX/26939303/
  19. wow!! Mattress Firm is selling their entire 21 acre campus including their buildings. 21 acres right off the South Loop on South Main. That's a lot of developable land in a highly trafficked area. I'd hope some type of institution would buy the land and create a company campus. Let's go Life Science campus!! The real estate finally made it's way onto Loopnet. Here's the Loopnet url and a snippet of the marketing flyer: https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/10201-Main-St-Houston-TX/27637468/
  20. The Loopnet listing was taken down! I assume the Loopnet order of procedures is to list the property as "Under Contract" and then when it's finally sold and changed hands you get a yellow header saying "This Land Property is no longer advertised on LoopNet.com." Hot location! South Main & Buffalo Speedway. Nearly 5 acres as well. Any predictions on the forthcoming development? I would, naturally, assume a 5-story multifamily wrap. An Alexan, Fairfield, Alta, Haven, Broadstone, Modera, Co-Op, etc. We haven't seen any Gables Residential multifamily projects lately. It would be nice to see another one. Maybe a "Gables Medical Center."
  21. The Colliers website indicates the 15-acres has been sold on 12/18/2020. From what I recall, it was sold to the family partnership that also owned the other tracts on Holmes Road/Buffalo Speedway? That area just needs to change! Why is it a breeding ground for illegal dumping? What's up with all the tires? What amazes me is the people doing the illegal dumping is doing this to their own neighborhood. No shame. They might not live on directly on Holmes Road, but they travel the road 5 days a week for work, or live outside the area on West Airport/Hiram Clarke/Willowbend/West Bellfort/Buffalo Speedway/Etc. I'm not a contractor or mechanic. I wonder the cost of the city dumping fees to dispose of tires and heavy trash? $5 - $10 per pound, or trip? A little rude, but I guess they would rather spend the $5 on Bud Light than to properly dispose of their heavy trash. Alcohol addiction is way stronger than their trash dilemma.
  22. A waste water application permit was pulled yesterday for the Health Science Center located at 1953 Butler Blvd. Let's go!!
