  1. Does Houston have any companies focused on research for psoriasis in the Texas Medical Center?
  2. I was researching the different locations of the infamous Southland Elementary School. A map I found online has me and a few HAIF members confused. One map says a school near Brays Bayou was the Almeda School. Then another map says it was the Southland School. I wonder which is correct? @JLWM8609states this several years ago: Southland Elementary never closed down. It first opened in 1915 on Allegheny St. Another structure was built on Dixie Dr in 1949. It's address was changed from Dixie Dr. to Tampa St. in 1978 when a new wing was added, and it's name was changed to Ruby L. Thompson Elementary school in the 80's. It will be moving to a new facility at 6121 Tierwester for the Fall 2007 semester. There was a farewell ceremony today for the old facility, I attended it since I went to Thompson from 1992 to 1994. The school location for this topic could be on Allegheny Street? Then why does the map specify Brays Bayou near Fannin Street? My information came from the newspaper The Houston Post dated in the 1910s and 1920s. The map I found is dated 1920. Southland School to Get Books For Prize. Southland School, out near Pierce Junction, which won the prize offered by the Harris County Public library for the best collection of wild flowers will be awarded a set of five nature guides Monday Night. The prize was donated by the Out Door Nature club and will be presented at the closing exercises of the school. Southlands near George H. Hermann Park. Property high and well drained. Just south of Brays Bayou, where the Gulf breezes are unobstructed and where the cold Northers are shut off. The place to buy and build your home right now. The SOUTHLAND School is new and modern, and started the term with an enrollment of 30 children. Quick and dependable transportation is now in operation by Mr. John Dobbin; fare 5 cent. Lots 50x100 feet and larger, none smaller. Prices still low and terms so easy you will wonder how we can do it. Harris County Investment Company Binz Building - Houston, Texas George W. Graham, Sales Manager - Phone Preston 996 Contract awarded for the new school at Southland Terrace. As announced Thursday, the contract for the above school building to be erected in Southland Terrace and to be known as the Southland school, was awarded to James Shapley & sons, and its erection will be under the supervision of Lane & Dowdy, architects The building is of that general type, that has become so popular for school purpose, in that it has the high basement, which at any future time can be changed into classrooms. In the supper or main story, are three large class rooms; the two in the rear may be thorn together and used for the auditorium, the state and dressing rooms being build as permanent fixtures. each rom is provided with cloak room, heating apparatus for the winter and cold air ventilation for the warm weather. The school will be located on Block No. 42, Southland terrace, this entire block having been given by the Harris County Investment Company for this purpose. Those living in the vicinity of the Southlands are to be congratulated on this latest improvement, as it is a strong indication of the city's growth southward, and the development that will take place around George H. Hermann Park, this building being but a short distance from the east entrance of the park. Street Map of Houston 1920 - Showing Wards. . The incorrect map, Geological Survey (U.S.) Bellaire Quadrangle map, 1921, lists Southlands as Brays Bayou School (on Almeda Road.)
  3. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Citizen dated March 23, 1950 and came across a school listing for the Southland Elementary School located at 3535 Dixie Dr. The ad was for a religous meeting from minister E.C. Coffman of The Riverside Church of Christ. It goes on to say a "new" location of the Southland Elementary School. I know Southland Elementary (Now Thompson Elementary?) has been located at several locations around the South/Southwest/Southeast side of Houston. They can't seem to find a permanent location!
  4. It was the 1st location of Southland School. The map labeled the schools incorrectly.
  5. A permit was pulled yesterday for utility work for a future garage located at 1977 1/2 Butler Blvd.
  6. I was looking for the two renderings of this proposed development by Lyme Properties. Does anyone have this in their archives? Thanks- Lyme launches large life sciences project By Jennifer Dawson – Houston Business Journal Nov 14, 2004 A national developer of life sciences properties plans to construct a 500,000-square-foot building near the expanding Texas Medical Center. This will be the first Houston project for Lyme Properties, which is based in Hanover, N.H., and calls itself the third-largest life sciences property developer in the country. Lyme has acquired two acres for the project at 1911 Holcombe Blvd., between the Ronald McDonald House and The Spires high-rise condominiums. Preliminary plans call for 350,000 square feet of medical office space, with the remaining 125,000 square feet earmarked for research and lab operations. The building will also include parking, and have roughly 25,000 square feet for a restaurant. The Lyme building is currently in the design phase, so the final concept may be tweaked a bit over the next six to nine months. The firm has been interviewing architects and contractors for the local development. https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories/2004/11/15/story3.html
  7. One Discovery Way: Dynamic Street being lines with trees: Two Discovery Way: Unknown Street connecting with Envision Street: Helix Park: Collaborative Building: Mixed-Use Garage:
  8. I was told Vaughn Construction already has contracts to build both the SCRB5 and the new UTHealth School of Public Health building. Both of which will coordinate design with the TMC3 project across the street. Lets go!!
  9. A line of new flags appeared!! Upon closer inspection they are for MCI Fiber Optic Cable.
  10. This weekend I saw a drill truck and something being covered up with black tarp.
  11. Chaplaincy At Methodist, Anderson, Hermann, TX Children's, And St. Lukes Anyone familiar with spiritual care in the TMC hospitals? Which one would you recommend? Which to avoid? Asking for a friend, no really, they will be looking for a new job come the New Year.
  12. 8210 Long Point Rd - 3.33 Acres of Commercial Land in Houston, TX https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/8210-Long-Point-Rd-Houston-TX/24886646/
  13. Ironically, I was just thinking about this forest land last week! I was creating a HAIF thread and then decided not to post it. 7-days later I see a Loopnet listing! Someone was reading my mind. Is this apart of the Wildcat Golf Course? I have seen signs posted from Wildcat that say "No swimming, No fishing. Private property". Looking at the supplied images from Loopnet, the two bodies of water that Wildcat owns is not apart of this. The signs are posted closer towards Almeda Road. When the city was expanding West Airport, they also built paved entrances into the vacant parcels of forest land. The road infrastructure is already there and ready for development! Given the area, I could see a large residential community here. Either single family homes, townhomes, or 3-story duplexes. 53-acres is a lot of land near the city's core. I really hope an institution buys this and builds a campus of sorts. Hospital campus, BioTech research campus, or an educational campus. If you think about it, that area is already sparked by 2 large forthcoming campuses. You have the TMC BioPort campus, and then the UT's 307-acres for sale. It's a little weird driving through this section of West Airport. It's like a country road with forests on both sides of you. Every time I drive through I wonder when someone will buy it and build. Lets go!! Loopnet listing: https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/W-Airport-Boulevard-Rd-Houston-TX/26947830/
  14. Google shows you some previous roads that were constructed. Or a path that was paved. This is located off West Bellfort, on Grand Fountains Drive by the town homes The Corner At Buffalo Pointe. Without knowing the road layout, I tried to hike it once. The woods and brush was too much to navigate. I would have needed a machete to chop down small shrubs and tree branches. I also made it near the wet lands, the body of water on the left side. There looked to be some type of automotive tracks now that I recall. Like a small train running through the area? Can't find the tracks at the moment but here's the wet lands. I wonder what company made the body of water? I don't think that's natural. If the proposed TMC BioPort gets underway, and hundred of acres of Bio Technology get developed, I can imagine something similar happening here. A Boston company entering the Houston market and grabbing the 307-Acres? Alexandria Real Estate?
  15. I was looking at 1957 pictures of the Arrowhead Speedway located on Old Spanish Trail when I noticed a pair of oval tracks just open the road on Fannin Street. The 2 tracks are different sizes. Looks like one could be a race course and the other a test track? Or one is a fun Go-Kart track? I wonder if the Arrowhead Speedway needed extra track space and decided to build more? This could be related to horses. This might be apart of a stables? I don't think this was apart of the Murel Goodell's Monorail, Inc. test line? That would have been in a straight line? Arrowhead Speedway on the left, dual tracks to the right: Image credit: https://www.historicaerials.com/ From Google Earth, 1953: Another view including the Arrowhead Speedway.
  16. I was reading the newspaper The Houston Post dated October 30, 1921 and noticed a public school on Westheimer Road called John Smith School. I then found a library item that has more details. 2503 Westheimer Houston Forum of Civics of River Oaks Garden Club. Built about 1880 until 1920 The John Smith School. Restored in 1927 by Will Hogg. A memorial since 1942 to Will and Mike Hogg. Gardens added in 1955. Open to public. I just looked on Google satellite. The River Oaks Garden Club Forum is still there! Do they own that whole parcel? Can't even imagine how much that RO parcel is worth!! I bet Hines or Hanover could build something tall here
  17. I was looking at old schools near the Texas Medical Center and found a public school called Brays Bayou School located on Almeda Road by the old St. Anthony's House. A 1920's map indicates the location differently? Possibly I am misreading things? The map shows the school located on Griggs Road (present day Old Spanish Trail?) near Old Main Street Road. Almeda is a bit to the right. Anyone know the story here? Adele Jones was the school principal & teacher, at one point. The Houston Post 1915: Houston Independent School District Annual Reports, 1914 - 1915: Geological Survey (U.S.) Bellaire Quadrangle map, 1921:
  18. Saw this cool Embassy Lincoln-Mercury Dealership located at 3620 Old Spanish Trail. Looks like the 1950s or 1960s. Anyone recall this place? Looks like this is now a Whataburger restaurant.
  19. Avison Young is a global commercial real estate services firm, headquartered in Toronto, with more than 100 offices in 15 countries. Avison Young was founded in 1978. https://www.avisonyoung.us/ I love all the new half white, half black For Lease signs! I'm seeing them all over town. Great work team! ______ I've also been seeing CBRE signs that are also half white, half black. Aren't JLL's new signs white/black as well? I wonder the coordination of this.
  20. I was looking at a Houston history site and found an image of car. The caption read: Rice Airfield 1910. Anyone know of such a thing? I thought I read a Rice journal about an airport next to, or near, Rice University. Would have guessed they were speaking about the South Main airports Houston Main Street Airport & Sam Houston Airport. Could there have been an airport/airfield in Rice's backyard? Would love to know more. I'll search for that I read a while back.
