  1. I was browsing the newspaper The Jewish Herald-Voice dated August 23, 1973 and came a business ad for Dean Goss' Dinner Theatre located at 2525 Murworth Dr. Cool artwork. Did anyone ever go here? It's not that long ago so maybe someone on HAIF knows about this place. Any pictures to share? Wonderfully, Impossibly, Funny "The Impossible Years" directed by Marietta Marich. 2525 Murworth - Near domed stadium.
  2. I was browsing the newspaper The Houston Post dated February 25, 1924 and came across a weekly film showings schedule. One of the advertisements was for the Rialto Theater. Here is what Cinematreasures says: Located across Main Street from the Queen Theatre, the Rialto Theatre was opened April 13, 1922 with Harold Lloyd in “A Sailor Made Man” and Florence Vidor in “Woman, Wake Up”. It was a ‘reverse’ movie theatre, having the screen at the front behind the façade. It remained a silent theatre when it closed in February 1927 with Reginald Denny in “The Cheerful Fraud”. http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/50205
  3. I was browsing an east end newspaper dated January 1, 1970 and came across an article about skating centers. Did anyone ever go here? I'd love to see some pictures or here any memories about this place. I also noticed a lot of these skate centers are called "Ranch". Interesting! Maybe because the venue was big and shaped like a ranch stable? Looks like J. Norman Malone was the owner of both the Skate Ranch at 1107 East Broadway St. and the Skate Ranch at 10750 Almeda-Genoa Highway. The Skate Ranch, located at 1107 East Broadway in Pasadena, phone 473-0343, and the Almeda Skate Ranch, 10750 Almeda-Genoa Highway, phone 941-7000, are the placed to go when are you in need of good, clean healthful, recreation. They have afternoon and evening seasons.
  4. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated September 28, 1966 and came across a business ad for Allbrittons Cafeterias located at 3835 Bellaire Blvd. "Where your calories are counted." They also had other locations as such: 3835 Bellaire Blvd. 905 Waugh (off Memorial) 2900 Weslayan 4120 McKinney Did anyone ever eat here? Was this located in the Bellaire Triangle by any chance?
  5. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated June 22, 1966 and came across a business ad for Riley's Super Market located at 3851 Bellaire Blvd. Did anyone ever shop here? I'd love to hear some memories. Who exactly ran this store? What ever happened to it? Did it go under or was it merged with a bigger grocer?
  6. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated June 22, 1966 and came across a business listing for D&K Dis-Kount Gorcery Store located at 3634 Bellaire Blvd. Did anyone ever shop here?
  7. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated September 23, 1964 and came across a business ad for Anderson Drug located at 4566 Bissonnet Street. Does anyone recall this local pharmacy? I wonder who was the owner/druggist. Probably someone with a last name of Anderson is my guess. This was somewhere at Bissonnet and Newcastle. Where Shipley's is? Or where the Fidelis building is?
  8. From the book Houston, a history and guide published in 1942. Sportsman's Field, 12000 Market St. Rd., sightseeing trips, charter service, and flight instructions, taxi, $1.50. https://archive.org/stream/houstonahistory00writmiss/houstonahistory00writmiss_djvu.txt
  9. From the book Houston, a history and guide published in 1942. Minor Stewart Airport, 12 m. S. of city on Almeda Rd. (State 288), sightseeing trips and charter service, taxi $1.50. https://archive.org/stream/houstonahistory00writmiss/houstonahistory00writmiss_djvu.txt
  10. From the book Houston, a history and guide published in 1942. Modern Transportation, Inc., Holmes and Griggs Rds., charter service, flight instructions, air- port taxi service (no charge). https://archive.org/stream/houstonahistory00writmiss/houstonahistory00writmiss_djvu.txt I wonder if this is actually the Linda Sue Airport located at Highway 288 And Holmes Road?
  11. A JLL truck was on site today. I wonder if it’s simply maintenance related or if there’s something else happening. Their surface parking lot will eventually be developed into something more useful. Most likely a parking garage but what would also make sense is a new tower with the podium serving as parking.
  12. More information from HAIF member @Dub When I worked in Greenway Plaza back in 1980 there was a model of the complex in the 'Underground' which depicted a multi story parking garage to be built across 59 which would accommodate propeller driven aircraft. Another case of common sense not allowing something to be constructed I guess?
  13. Does anyone know what this black mid-rise building is? I was browsing the Library of Congress for Houston buildings and came across this aerial skyline picture of the Texas Medical Center. I can't seem to figure out what this building is. The black building is located in between the Crowne Plaza Hotel at 6701 South Main and the The O'Quinn Medical Tower at 6624 Fannin. Is this the Halliburton office and laboratory building? Or the University of Texas Computer Center? Looks like a different application of building than the rest of the hospitals, etc.
  14. I was reading the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated November 18, 1964 and came across an advertisement selling a new residential community in Conroe, TX. As apart of their marketing ads, they included a picture of the Montgomery County Airport, 3 miles from Northeast of Conroe. The airport has three hard surface runways. Did this airport survive and expand to meet current needs? I know there is a current Conroe airport located at 10260 Carl Pickering Memorial Dr. Cool picture though! Love old fields.
  15. Given all the excitement about the new 500-Acre TMC BioPort Campus I wanted to research Holmes Road and see who it was named after. Harry H. Holmes was born in North Henderson, Illinois on 8/12/1879. He died of a kidney infection on 3/3/1951 at Memorial Hospital (which was on Lamar Street downtown at the time.) At the time of his death, he lived at 2624 Arbor Street, in the Riverside area. For many years, he lived at 1112 Leeland. I assume that was a nice house, the 1930 Census lists the value at $35,000. Harry Holmes was a real estate developer who developed the Sunnyside neighborhood in South Houston. I also read, at one time, he was a City of Houston councilman. I wonder if there are any pictures of the home at 1112 Leeland Street? Or of his home at 2624 Arbor Street? If anyone has any additional information about Harry H. Holmes I'd love to hear it.
  16. I was browsing the newspaper The Texas Jewish Herald dated August 15, 1929 and came across a business listing for Kaphan's Shadowland located on Old Main Street Road past End O' Main Hall. Very cool find! I've never heard of the term Shadowland added to the restaurant's name. Must have been the original name when it was located on OMS? The South Main location had an address of 7900 South Main Street. The Kaphan's Shadowland restaurant may have been located at 7900 Old Main Street?
  17. I was browsing The Houston Post dated February 23, 1924 and saw this movie listing for Lincoln Theatre located at 711 Prairie St. Looking on Cinematreasures, this theater was awesome! Edit: The architect was Henry Collier Cooke! The "Star Architect" of the day. Opened in 1916 as a vaudeville theatre. It had a 20ft x 24ft stage, 18 sets of lines and two dressing rooms. By 1921 it was operated as an African-American movie & vaudeville theatre, operated by the Bijou Amusement Company. It was demolished in 1977 and the site became a parking lot for the Houston Chronicle. http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/11383
  18. I was reading the newspaper The Thresher dated September 14, 1972 and came across a movie advertisement for Art Cinema located at 6140 Village Parkway. This was an adult theater. 6140 Village Parkway - 528-8186 - In University Village - 1/2 Block East of Kirby Dr. between Times & Amherst.
  19. Had some downtime this week so I went into the new tunnel leading to T2. It's a very nice building!!
  20. I was browsing old The Bellaire Texan newspapers dated in the 1950s and found an address! This field was often referred to being located at "Stella Link at South Main" but I found a news article that is giving an address of 11400 South Main Street. There was a golf course/golf range at that same intersection, no? Does anyone have any details on where the two were located? Maybe different decades? Looks like the South Main Golf Center/Briarwood Country Club was located at 10920 South Main St. I also heard this baseball field was across from the South Main Drive-In Theater which was located at 11510 South Main St. Looking at the two addresses, they are very close to each other.
  21. Found a picture! Although it's not the best viewing of the actual airport. From the book "Celeste" published in 2020 written by Celeste Graves. Tommy Mason and Ed Hensch at South Main Airport Houston, Texas 1940
  22. From a Rice Thresher newspaper dated November 24, 1948. Learn To Fly! Check with us at the Sam Houston Airport on South Main Cliff Hyde Flying Service - Phone: MO-4551
  23. I was browsing the Texas Almanac dated 1947-1948 and came across an airport/airfield listing that we've never heard about. The airfield was called Sportman Field. Does HAIF know anything about it? Where was it located? I bet that historical Texas airfield website would have it? They have everything! Here's a 19471948 list of Houston airports - Skyport Main Street Field Sam Houston Field Houston Municpal Airport Erwin Herman Field Minor Stewart Field Sportman Field
  24. I was looking around old Houston airports and I discovered an unknown airfield named Minor Stewart Air Field. Does HAIF know anything about it? Where was it located? I bet that historical Texas airfield website would have it? They have everything! Here's a 1943 list of Houston airports - Cunningham Airport Houston Main Street Airport Houston Municipal Airport Minor Stewart Field Sam Houston Airport Skyport Airport
  25. I was browsing the newspaper Jewish Herald-Voice dated November 20, 1947 and came across an article for a new store upcoming. The company was called Aircon Air Conditioning, Inc. located at 6632 South Main Street. Clever name! Not much to it. A small (probably mom and pop) air conditioning company in the heart of the TMC. Very cool! Air Conditioning Firm on S. Main announces opening L.B. Rosenzweig and Tilden Edwards announces the formal opening of their new firm- the Aircon Air Conditioning, Inc., located at 6632 South Main, next to the Ship Ahoy. Mr. Rosenzweig, the President, Mr. Edwards, Vice-President, and Barrett Bird, Chief Engineer, have had may years of experience, and offer a complete service.
