  1. Looked at old newspaper articles and advertisements. We can see an official address! Meyer Speedway was located at 14015 South Main St. NASCAR Sanctioned Stock Car Races - Late Model Sportsman & Hobby Cars PLUS Destruction Derby Bicentennial Classic Set For Meyer Speedway.
  2. Was the Houston International Speedway and Houston International Raceway at different locations? I was browsing old newspaper and I came across (similar) addresses. Houston International Speedway located at Gulf Freeway at Farm Road 3003 (also written as FM 3002.) Houston International Raceway located at Farm Road 565. Houston International Speedway. Houston International Raceway.
  3. Some Playland Park articles and advertisements from random newspapers. What I found cool is they had a dancing venue called "Venetian Grove". Must have been so cool! I believe I saw that there was a complete list of attractions, rides, food vendors, games, etc. I'll have to find that list. I wonder how many rides, or roller coasters, there was?
  4. Articles in the Henderson Daily News dated November 3, 1939 and The Daily Sun dated May 25, 1939.
  5. This race track sure had a lot of names. I was researching this track and I've heard the names: South Houston Speedway, Gulf Coast Speedway, Houston Speedway, and finally Bellaire Speedway. Funny how there wasn't any mention of either Stella Link or Buffalo Speedway (where the track was located.) Were those roads even around back then? Did the racetrack not have an address? This speedway had both Horse and Automobile racing, and had an annual balloon race/celebration. The speedway was active in the 1920s. All the Texas newspapers spoke about it. Houston Speedway. Gulf Coast Speedway. Bellaire Speedway. South Houston Speedway. A picture containing a race car driver and with a poster in the background with "Houston Speedway" written on it.
  6. Arrowhead Park sure does have some memories! First it was a horse racing track, then the monorail testing site, and finally it was an automobile racing site. Looks like the horse racing was active in the 1940s, monorail testing site was active in the 1950s to 1970s? and the Speedway was active in the 1950s. So maybe all around the same time. Brodie Manager of Racing Park: Houston, Texas, Feb. 15th Steve Brodie, colorful Arizona horseman and cousin of "Take-a-Chance Brodie" of Brooklyn bridge jumping fame, today was named general manager of Arrowhead Park by George H. Echols, president of Houston's new $1,250,000 plant for quarter horse racing, rodeos, horse and cattle shows. Arrowhead Park is scheduled to open in May. Regarding the proposed, and tested monorail, here is a television news script for people to read. Neighborhood reactions and comments about the monorail. Finally, the awesome Arrowhead Park Speedway. Stock Car Races Every Thursday & Saturday - 8:15 P.M. Asphalt Track, Covered Grandstand, Top Drivers. Old Spanish Trail at Main St. Houston, Texas.
  7. Looks like Epsom Downs was first a horse racing course, and decades later become an automobile course. I was browsing old Texas newspaper and came across articles dated 1930s and 1950s. I'll post them below. W.A. Lee, left and Emil H. Marks, president and vice president of the Epsom Downs Rodeo Company, will direct three days of bronc hustling calf roping and steer "rasslin" at Epsom Downs Race Track. Lee is a Houston hotel man, and Marks a Barker, Texas rancher. The automobile race track in the 1950s was called, or nicknamed, North Houston Speedway on Humble Road. November 15, 1934 November 13, 1936 February 28, 1957 From tshaonline.org: From HAIF's main front page:
  8. I was browsing the newspaper called South Belt Leader dated December 4, 1925 and came across race track called Galveston-Houston Speedway located half way between Galveston and Houston in Webster, TX. A national speedway between Galveston and Houston, destined to be perhaps the fastest automobile board track in the world, will be a reality by spring. This was announced yesterday by C.E. Brinsdon, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, and Walter H. Myers of Harrisburg. The track will be located at Webster, between the two cities. The Galveston-Houston Speedway will be a one and one-quarter mile oval, banked from ten degrees on the straightaways to forty-eight degrees on the curves. The width will be fifty feet over all. The running surface will be two by fours on edge and laid lengths. Approximately 4,500,000 feet of yellow pine and seventy five tons of nails will be required to build the giant bowl. The speedway will have a stadium grandstand on the home stretch to seat 15,000 persons and a bleacher on the back stretch to seat 10,000. Three tunnels will be made under the track to provide entrance to the infield, consisting about 100 acres, will accommodate more than 100,000 persons and 8,000 automobiles at each event.
  9. Will Public Storage have 2 facilities down the street from each other? I would imagine they will consolidate the two into the new mid-rise building. This parcel might be up for sale soon.
  10. Almeda Speedway changes hands, June 21, 1972. Bob Derrington, a former NASCAR grand national driver, has bought the speedway at 1500 Almeda Road. Formerly Almeda Speedway, has rechristened to Space City Raceway, and held his first race last Friday. Stock Car Racing. Late Model Stock, Mini Stock, Hobby Stock.
  11. I was browsing the newspaper Southwestern Times dated November 15, 1945 and came across this advertisement for the American Legion Dance at The New Yorker Dinner Club located at South Main at Old Spanish Trail. Monday, November 19 to raise funds for the erection of a new home or John R. Burkett Post 77. 12. I was browsing the newspaper Bellaire Texan dated April 11, 1956 and noticed an article about a grand opening of a shopping center called Willows Shopping Center. They had a full-page ad! This small shopping center is located on Willowbend Blvd. at South Post Oak Rd. I do not see an Annie's Restaurant/Annie's Cafe listed on the original tenant list in 1956. I wonder when Annie's moved in? Possibly they took over the space of the former Zimmerman's Meat Market & Delicatessen. J.W. Lander, head of the J.W. Lander Construction Co., which built the shopping center, pointed out it includes 15,000 square of floor space and 60,000 square feet of parking area. The fireproof building is of masonry and steel. It is owned by J.W. Lander and his cousin, Frank B. Lander. The Lineup: Willow Shopping Center Elite Cleaners, 10803 S. Post Oak Rd. Post Oak Shoe Repair, 1805 S. Post Oak Rd. The Willows Coffee Shop, 1807 S. Post Oak Rd. Post Oak Liquor Store, 10811 S. Post Oak Ivy's Barber Shop, 10809 S. Post Oak Rd. Country Club Hair Salon, 10813 S. Post Oak Rd. Jaudon's Tots & Teens, 10815 S. Post Oak Rd. Bobby Jean Dance Studio, 10817 S. Post Oak Rd. Sanders Hardware, Inc., 10819 S. Post Oak Rd. Zimmerman's Meat Market & Delicatessen, 10821 S. Post Oak Rd. Wortham's Pharmacy, 10823 S. Post Oak Rd.
  13. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated September 26, 1962 and came across a crime article. The article was about the neighborhood U'Tote'm store located at 4102 Willowbend Blvd. This is the present day empty Frank Liu field? Or possibly the Best Care EMS place? Did anyone ever go here? When did it open? Close? Was this a stand alone building or attached to a retail strip center? Very cool history! (not the crime.)
  14. I was browsing the newspaper The Thresher dated October 2, 1942 and came across a business ad for Pladium Bowling Lanes located at 1310 Mc Duffie St. Very cool! Never heard about this place before. I'd love to see some pictures, or a postcard. The bowing alley was located at the River Oaks Community Center complex. 20 Brunswick Centennial Lanes "Bowling at Its Best"
  15. I was browsing the newspaper South Belt Press dated August 17, 1977 and found a few business ads for Kirkmont Skate Ranch located at 10800 Hall Rd. Looks like Russell Thomas, S.R.S.T.A. Professional was the owner/manger and August 17, 1977 was their opening date-ish. Did anyone ever skate here? I wonder if there are any inside pictures of this place.
  16. I was browsing the newspaper The Houston Post dated November 28, 1923 and came across this ad for McMillian's Dance Academy. I didn't see this business talked about on HAIF. The dance academy was a big thing to do on the weekends. Not sure where it was located. I bet someplace downtown on Main, Fannin, etc. On The Houston Post's Weekend Attractions article it has a dancing categoryand lists the following: Sylvan Beach, Bay Shore Park, McMillian's Dancing Academy. "Dance for a Real Honest to Goodness Time Have Your Friends Meet You At Our Thanksgiving Ball" Two Orchestras. Jack Willrich and the Night Owls will furnish continuous music - so dance lovers can dance-dance-dance to their hearts' content - and dance some more. At the bottom:
  17. I was browsing the newspaper The Houston Post dated May 7, 1922 and came across this ad for Nutt Stock Co. I assume this was a theater? Very cool find! Never even heard about this place. This listing is included in the Week's Attractions that includes all the Houston downtown theatres. Cozy, Crown, Capitol, Iris, Isis, Liberty, Majestic, (Nutt Stock Co.), Prince, Rialto, and finally Strand Theatre. Nutt Stock Co: Nona Nutt and E. V. Dennis in "Way Down East."
  18. I was browsing the newspaper The Houston Post dated February 14, 1923 and came across this ad for Rollaway Skating Palace located at Washington Ave. & Heights Blvd. I believe there was also another Rollaway Skating Rink on South Main. Couldn't find any addresses, just article mentions.
  19. While browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Citizen dated December 22, 1949 I came across a business ad for Oaklawn Bowling Lane located at 3815 Harrisburg Blvd. Under Complete New Management - By Ray King. Phone number BE-0764. This looks to be the current place of El Charro Mexican Restaurant? Does anyone have any memories or stories to share about this bowling alley? When did it shut down?
  20. I was searching Ebay for TMC memorabilia and came across this matchbook for Royal Motel located at 1300 Old Spanish Trail "Walking distance of Astrodome". Did anyone happen to stay here? Any memories or stories here about the place? Looks like the City Plaza Condominiums was built at this location once the old motel was demolished.
  21. Found this matchbook on Ebay for Romana Cafeteria located at 5215 Buffalo Speedway. What's the story of this place? Was it bought out by Wyatt's Cafeteria (turned Luby's) and then this particular location closed? Looks like this is was located at the present-day HEB on Bissonnet & Buffalo Speedway. Was this restaurant in the Speedway Shopping Center? The Speedway Shopping Center was active in the 1960s. I'm not sure when Romana Cafeteria was in operation. Another location of Romana Cafeteria was at 6223 Bellaire Blvd. at Hillcroft Ave.
  22. Did anyone ever go to the old Club Heat located at 511 Main Street in Downtown Houston? I'm searching for pictures of the interior. When did this club close exactly? Does anyone have any memories of this club?
  23. The Rice Thresher newspaper dated November 10, 1961. Band Displays Rice History As the band forms first an outline of Lovett Hall, the original building of the University and second a trolley car, the band will recall the days when this campus was the last stop on old Main Street trolley run.
  24. I was reading the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated September 21, 1950 and saw an article about this. Obviously this fell through? Were there any renderings or drawings of this project? Was this the black building in between the Crowne Plaza Hotel and the O'Quinn Medical Tower? This week I discovered a mid-rise black building that looked hidden (or out of place) in the medical center. The black building was not located on OST/Old Main though. The article states: Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Co. will build a $130,000 office and laboratory building on Old Spanish Trail, near the Old Main Street Road.
  25. A Plan Review Permit was pulled yesterday for a multifamily apartment complex located at 5811 Winsome Lane.
