  1. I was browsing the newspaper Southwestern Times dated June 10, 1948 and came across this business ad for Kustard Kup located at 8030 South Main St. Opposite Prince's. Very cool name! Unique for sure. I'd love to know more about this place. Since it was the 1940s, it was probably a stand a lone building? Maybe a small stand or drive-in? Serving delicious frozen custard, packaged ice cream.
  2. I found a very obscure theater found today. I was looking at the newspaper The Texas Jewish Herald dated January 10, 1935 and came across a film showing listing for The Strand. Very cool! There was an article a decade afterwards about one of the founders/operators who owned a lot of other theatres in downtown at that time. January 10, 1935. Mrs. Millie Schulman, 69, who together with her husband, A Schulman operated a number of motion picture theatres here between 1910 and 1928, died at her home, 612 Harold Street, at 2:15 p.m. Friday. Mrs. Schulam had been a resident of Houston for the past 24 years. She and her husband operated the Pastime Theatre located in the 200 block of Main Street, from 1910 to 1915, and the Texas Theatre, located near Congress and Main Street, from 1915 until 1921, the Stand Theatre, located near Travis and Texas, from 1921 until 1928, and two or three suburban theatres from 1917 until 1928. Their son, Morris Schulam, now resident of Bryan where he operates a theatre, aided them for a number of year in the operation of the various Houston theatres.

Eddie Nix has charge of the training and riding instructions.
  4. Woah! I found one of the first rodeos of Houston! I was browsing the newspaper The Houston Informer dated February 23, 1924 and came across a business ad for Cattlemen's Rodeo at the End of South Main Street. This was before the Houston Fat Stock Show and Livestock Exposition in the 1930s. I believe. Bassett Blakely & Frank Y. Dew Present. Under Personal Direction Tom L. Burnett. The Most Thrilling, Sensational, and Grueling Contests o.f Cowboy Sports Ever Staged In Texas The Cattlemen's Rodeo. Special Arena Seating 10,000- End of South Main Street. You could buy the tickets at downtown's Rice Hotel. Cattlemen's Rodeo Headquarters - Second Floor Republic Building. Phone - Preston 3327. From what I read, Tom L. Burnett was a wealthy rodeo businessman. A Hollywood Star. The Houston Post dated February 25, 1924: Others I found during the same time period. Sakowitz Bros. ad.
  5. I was browsing the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated January 19, 1950 and came across this ad for Clover Ballroom located at 315 Milby St. Meet your friends at the new beautiful Clover Ballroom Popular prices, Bill Mraz Orchestra - Bob Hellers Orchestra.
  6. I was browsing the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated January 19, 1950 and came across this business ad for J.M.H. Supermarket No. 3 located at 6204 College (at Milton) West University Place. J.M. Huffington, left, of J.M.H. Supermarkets, and Archer Romero, prominent agriculturist and feed expert and secretary of the Houston Fat Stock Show, examine some of the chemically-wrapped minerals used in the feeding program at Huffington Ranch. From the The Bellaire Citizen dated March 9, 1950. Showing cowboys on the Huffington Ranch.
  7. I was browsing the newspaper Texan dated May 8, 1985 and came across a business ad for Barry's Pizza located at 6622 S. Main and also 5176 Richmond. I never knew the good ole Barry'z Pizza had other locations! I thought they originated on Richmond & Fountain View. I thought the Richmond location would be where the old Windsor Plaza Shopping Center was. It's actually located across the street where the long-term tenant 24 Hour Fitness is?
  8. I was browsing the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated August 15, 1947 and discovered, yet again, another South Main Drive-In Theater! This one is brought to you by Weber's Root Beer Stand. Combined Movie, Drive In To Be established: A new idea in entertainment, drive-in drink service with free motion pictures, is soon to be inaugurated in Southwest Houston. Establishing the new enterprise in the 10,100 block of South Main will be a Weber's Root Beer Stands, which were popular in Houston a decade ago and now are making a return with the new stand, the only one of its kind in Texas and perhaps the nation. One five acres of ground about midway between Playland Park and South Main Drive-In Theater, adjoining Prince's yacht, the drive-in setup will accommodate 250 cars. The opening date probably will be between Sept. 1, and Set. 15, Ray Jelinek, who will be manager of the stand said. "This will be the largest drive-in drink stand in Texas." Mr. Jelinek said "It will be a paradise for teen-agers free movies, and a mug of root beer for a nickel." "And those teen-agers who don't remember Weber's root beer should ask their mothers and dads if they recall how good Weber's root beer was when they were younger and it was sold in Houston." At that time Weber's was located at the end of Main Street, which was Main and Bellaire Boulevard, and now Weber's will establish a new "end of Main Street" stand. Another feature in a newspaper dated 1940s. May 26, 1948. Looking at the addresses of the boat restaurants, the only one that would make sense is Angelo's Fisherman's Wharf since it's located at 10200 South Main. If the Weber's Superior Drive-In Theater is located at 10,100 South Main then it's a match! I also read "adjoining Prince's yacht.” Do they mean one of the seafood restaurants made out of a boat? There were four that I know of: Angelo's Fisherman's Wharf At 10200 South Main St. Captain Benny's Oyster Bar At 7409 South Main St. George Dentler's Pier 21 Restaurant At 7001 Fannin St. The Yacht Restaurant At 10200 South Main St. Awesome find. A very obscure drive-in theater!
  9. The TSHA article on Prince’s Hamburgers mentioned this company, Weber’s Root Beer Stand, located at 4509 South Main St. One of the paragraphs below: Prince established a small hamburger stand on Lemmon Avenue in Dallas in 1929. He ran the stand by himself and took orders, cooked food, and could be considered one of the first carhops in Dallas. Within a year, Prince looked for greater opportunity, and on a visit to Houston in 1934, he decided that city was the best location for his business. Enthralled with the business activity on Houston’s Main Street, Prince moved from Dallas to Houston and in 1935 opened his first-drive in an old Weber’s Root Beer stand at 4509 South Main. The contract said that the Weber name should remain for six months. After that time the “Prince’s Famous Hamburgers” name was launched in March 1936. Does anyone have any more information about the original Weber’s Root Beer stand at 4509 South Main? Pictures or postcards? Any memories or stories to tell?

  15. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated March 5, 1975 and came across a business listing for Kettle Restaurant located at 5545 Southwest Freeway. Formally, in the ad, the restaurant is called Kettle Pancake House. I believe they go by two different names. Did anyone eat here? Any pictures of the building? I'm surprised a pancake house would offer employees both paid vacations and a retirement plan.
  16. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated December 29, 1965 and came across a business ad for Rettig’s Drive-In Restaurant located at 7205 Hillcroft Ave. Did anyone ever eat here? 17. I was browsing The Bellaire Texan dated September 2, 1964 and came across this business ad for A&W Restaurant Drive-In located at 4001 Bellaire at Stella Link. Looks like September 2, 1964 was around their grand opening. I believe this was once mentioned on HAIF? Probably in a Historic Houston thread about restaurants or in a Bellaire history thread. 21. Was just reading an article. One person states the "end of main" was located at Bellaire & Main. I misunderstood this. I thought the "end of main" was at Main & 610. This would reconcile the address of 9810 South Main. Everyone has opinions. There wasn't an official, by the city, definition of "end of main".
  22. Looking at some corporate banking documents for BCM. The documents I received are "Request for Release of Lien". The documents have real estate information as well. Can't exactly post the information as its confidential and bank related. Edit: This looks to be for the McNair campus. It does specify Parcel 6 containing 4.438-acres though.

  25. I was researching Houston retail the other day and came across this old, now demolished, shopping center called Speedway Shopping Center. This is the current day HEB parcel on the corner of Buffalo Speedway & Bissonnet. Do we know who was the developer? I wonder the list of stores here? I can see: Hi Hat Cleaners Max's Beauty Salon Buffalo Pharmacy Barber Shop Records Lewis & Coker Liquor Store Does anyone recall this old retail center? Memories or pictures? August 24, 1964: This pylon stands on Buffalo Speedway north of Bissonnet, marking the location of the newly renovated and enlarged Speedway Shopping Center.
