  1. Edit: Young Men's Hebrew Association was located at 310 1/2 Main Street in 1922. Brith Abraham Association was located at 1401 Chartres Street in 1922. I guess, some 13 years later, the Young Men's Hebrew Association had their "hall" located here. I was browsing the newspaper Texas Jewish Herald dated December 26, 1935 and came across this business ad for Y.W. & Y.M.H.A. Hall At Chartres & Clay St. Very cool find! I've never heard of this, sounds like an underground theater. Given the time frame it would be a scary time in history. Paramount Movie Service (A Houston Organization) Presents Shlom Aleichem's "Laughter Thru Tears" With a cast of 1000 Y.W. & Y.M.H.A. Hall Chatres at Clay Admission: 50 cent adults 25 cent children
  2. I was browsing the publication The Thresher dated March 4, 1948 and came across this business ad for The Trionon Club located at 3820 Old Spanish Trail. "Houston's Most Reasonable Night Club" L. 5106 for Reservation. Does anyone know about this club?
  3. I was browsing the newspaper The Southwest Citizen dated November 24, 1949 and came across this business ad for Mickie's Bakery with several locations in the Houston area. Anyone recall this bakery? They had locations at: 905 Richmond 2616 Blodgett 6606 South Main 5100 Almeda 421 Fannin 5314 Scott 3306 Dixie Drive
  4. Such amazing history here. Any other live bands in the heart of the TMC? One of Houston's many traveling performers was Dave's Black Spasm Incomparable One Mans Band from Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1933, he was performing at Weber's Beer Garden, located at Main Street and Bellaire Road.
  5. I was reading The Thresher dated December 6, 1929 and came across an unusual golf course. Lilliput Golf Course. Course at Entrance of Herman Park across from Sam Houston statue. Also called the Lilliput Miniature Golf Course. Looks like it was owned by W.B.N. Miniature Golf Courses, Incorporated. Photograph:
  6. I was browsing the newspaper Texas Jewish Herald dated October 25, 1934 and came across a business ad for South Main Roller Rink located at Bellaire (now Holcombe) and Main. Phone number: had, 0251. Is this a new skating rink that we never knew about? There are other South Main skating rinks: Gateway Roller Rink At 8370 South Main St. Gateway Swim And Skate At 8510 South Main St. Rolls-Away Roller Rink On South Main St.
  7. Today I found an amazing discovery! I read an article in a newspaper that was written during the time they were in that small studio at 3617 Main St. Southwestern Times dated October 16, 1947. Braeswood Actress To Direct Alley Theatre Nina Vance of 2213 Dorrington in Braeswood, well known Houston actress, last week was elected director of the Alley Theatre at an organization meeting attending by over 100 Houstonians. The group, which ultimately hopes to build its own theatre, will begin offering productions of the "intimate" or "circle" style in a studio at 3617 Main Street, the director said. Tryouts for the groups first production are now underway, Mrs. Vance Said.
  8. I was browsing the newspaper Texas Jewish Herald dated January 13, 1938 and I came across an advertisement for The Grove Club "12 miles out South Main". I don't see an address for this. 13 miles out of south main would place the club near the present day Stafford, TX? Probably empty fields so there wasn't a need for a numbering system. Some of the major acts were Jimmy Dorsey, Carlos Molina, Dell Coon and his Orchestra, Mark Fisher and his Orchestra, Henry King and his Orchestra. Max Manus was in charge of the excellent French cuisine. He was called a Maitre d'Hotel. Mr. Manus of the Texas State Hotel was the person of contact for reservations/tickets. Squires Club used to have events there. Apparently The Grove club was very popular back in the 1930s. I've never heard of it until this week. Very cool find!
  9. Pulling this historical information out of a Going Up! thread (Levit Green) and into it's own Historic Houston thread. 10. Commerce Street was considered the wholesale produce center of Houston. Pictured here are trucks backed up to the Grocers Supply Company in 1929 waiting to shuttle produce to local markets. Noticed this amazing photograph in a historical Houston book. Houston in the 1920s and 1930s.
  11. Texas Medical Center’s future 500-acre BioPort campus a 'game changer,' TMC CEO says Oct 10, 2022 https://www.bizjournals.com/houston/news/2022/10/10/texas-medical-center-tmc-bioport-economic-impact.html Announced at the recent State of the TMC event, the campus will focus on cell and gene therapy — a method that takes cells out of the body for correction through highly sophisticated biomanufacturing then places them back into the body to treat diseases — as well as manufacturing and distribution for pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. McKeon told the Houston Business Journal talks for this campus began when the pandemic hit. During the height of Covid-19, each member institution of the medical center had to pull their requests together to make one order for personal protection equipment, vaccines and ventilators from Europe and Asia. However, during this time, the orders also were met with a lot of theft, creating additional problems. “A lot of the focus right now is, 'How do we make sure that Houston has a major distribution area in the event of another pandemic or major environmental event?'” McKeon said. “It's really about national security. A number of events that have taken place over the last two years, three years since the pandemic has made us really see the value of TMC BioPort.” In all, the BioPort campus is expected to create 100,000 jobs. The new jobs will not just be for people who have earned Ph.D.s — TMC aims to incorporate students right out of high school with an education campus in the middle of BioPort, he said. TMC plans to partner with Texas A&M University, Houston Independent School District and others to bring the education component to fruition. “You need the minds; we've had them here for years with our 120,000 employees at the medical center,” McKeon said. “You need a place where an industry can work side by side, and that's what Helix Park brings. You need an early-stage incubator, and that's what our Innovation Factory brings. And now, you need biomanufacturing, so when you're developing new drugs and therapies, you want to test those lines locally, close by so you can deliver them to patients.” TMC BioPort’s campus will be near the intersection of Buffalo Speedway and Holmes Road, west of Wildcat Golf Club and about a mile south of the 610 Loop. It will be constructed in phases. Information about the owners of the land and additional details could not be made available right now. The master plan for the campus is being done by David Manfredi of Elkus Manfredi Architects, the same Boston-based firm that designed TMC Helix Park. With $100 million invested for infrastructure, McKeon expects to break ground on construction as early as the first quarter of next year. So far, TMC has spent $5 million on preparations, and plans to spend another $5 million in the next six months as part of the due diligence stage. McKeon emphasized that since the project is in the due diligence stage, anything could happen that could cause TMC to call it off. Although he does not see that happening, McKeon said it is important to keep in mind how early on the project is.
  12. This is located near the corner of Fountain View & San Felipe. Looks like the old Three Fountains apartments will be demolished for this development. Looking on Google Satellite, I can see the corner bank with drive through, the long retail strip center, and finally the Public Storage buildings behind the retail strip center. You can tell it's the same site because the Public Storage buildings are portrayed to be same length in the rendering. Comparing satellite, one of the buildings is shorter than the other. There is also that small building sitting in between the long strip center and the Public Storage buildings. I can also see what looks to be the The Village of Tanglewood multifamily complex behind this proposed Heights Venture building.
  13. Is this the new multifamily by Pacific Star Capital designed by Heights Ventures? Comparing the rendering vs. Google satellite and the surroundings look to ad up. Not 100% sure though..
  14. I was told the research floors have been placed on hold. Harvey will be finishing the garage and then wrapping the exposed rebar forms. One of the tower cranes is scheduled to come down in a few weeks.
  15. The building has two names. Dan L. Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center and now the Q'uinn Medical Center. Rear surface lot:
  16. More trailers arrived at the site. I went and spoke to a site foremen. I was told this is a parking, staging, and office area for the Centennial Tower. Bummer!! This high profile site will be developed. I give it 10 years.
  17. The 600 - 601 Travis tunnel is illuminated pink in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
  18. The address is 6800 South Main at Holcombe. Looks like it's a small gourmet grocer. 19. Less than a year after closing for business, the former Willowisp Country Club and golf course in Missouri City has been purchased by real estate giant Trammell Crow Co. for development of a massive commercial business park. The 168 acres that are occupied by the shuttered country club and 18-hole golf course, which closed on Dec. 31, 2006 after almost 50 years in business, will developed into Lakeview Business Park. The park will eventually encompass 2.5 million square feet of industrial and commercial space. I found another location of Willowisp Country Club in March 13, 1966. Located at 13003 Settegast. Was this the original location or just another building in the 168-acres?
  20. I was browsing The Thresher dated November 28, 1951 and noticed a unique address for the Hi-Hat Club. The address listed is 7020 Old Main Street Road. I know the City of Houston changed Bellaire Blvd. into Holcombe Blvd. These renumberings are interesting to see. November 28, 1951 - 7020 Old Main Street Road November 20, 1942 - 1019 Bellaire
