  1. I was browsing the publication The Citizen dated May 12, 1976 and came across a business ad for Kettle Restaurants, alternatively named Kettle Pancake Houses. Almost like a One's A Meal situation. The actual name of the restaurant was Brooks Sandwich Shops but their signature sandwich was called One's A Meal. Looks like the Kettle Restaurants/Kettle Pancake Houses were owned by a company called H.L.H. Enterprises, Inc. P.O. Box 2964 Houston, Tex 77001 I'm not sure about all the Kettle restaurants. There were also Dutch Kettle Restaurants and Kopper Kettle Cafeterias. Anyone have knowledge about these places? I believe Kettle Restaurant was a cheaper alternative to Dutch Kettle? Kettle Restaurants had a whole bunch of locations! 10317 South Main St. 9047 South Main St. 5545 Southwest Freeway 2701 Mangum (N.W. 7. wow! There is some very cool history and pictures in the Gateway Swim & Skate Facebook Group. There's too many pictures to post. I'll post a small batch. There were really hills near here? I thought the hills in the postcard was just artwork. What were the hills from? The BFI Holmes Road Dump? https://www.facebook.com/Gateway-Swim-Skate-137489473122934/ Illuminated street signage. I heard the South Main Strip used to be all illuminated, like you were driving in Las Vegas. The pool really was named Crystal Pool. I thought it was just a customer nickname. Gateway Crystal Swimming Pool - 8510 South Main - MO 7 83914 L.H. Oldfield, Mgr. Postcard: Construction pictures! Incredible that there is construction pictures from so long ago. I like to think of HAIF creating picture memories for the future generations in 50+ years from now. Ariel view. As always, it's just amazing how much of the South Main area was just empty fields/grassland back in the day. wow! In this picture there is a long building near the Crystal Pool. I assume that's the Gateway Roller Rink? I also see a row of homes on the bottom left. Most of the structures look to be residential rather than commercial. Where's all the restaurants and activity? Guess we are looking towards modern-day 610, what was called "End of Main" back then? Hills in the background: Swimming lanes: The crystal bubbler. This is the focus behind the naming of Gateway Crystal Swimming Pool. Lastly, where did the skating rink come in? All we ever hear about is the swimming pool. All the postcards, and historical pictures were of the Crystal Pool. This week, I discovered the skating section was housed in another building on the property. Gateway Roller Rink was located at 8370 South Main St. I believe it would be the long building near the Crystal Pool.

  19. I was looking at The Thresher newspaper dated April 13, 1923 and noticed a business listing for Leopold & Price Clothing Store. This must be Leopold Meyer's retail business? https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/meyer-leopold-leopold Leopold Meyer, retail merchant and medical fund-raiser, was born in Galveston on June 21, 1892, the sixth of nine children of Achille and Malline (Kahn) Meyer. He received his B.A. degree from Tulane University in 1912 and returned to Galveston, where he followed his brothers into the retail business. He worked for F. S. Levy and Company in Houston until 1918, when he joined Foley Brothers Dry Goods Company; there he quickly worked his way up to executive vice president and credit manager. In 1946 he and his brothers opened a retail operation known as Meyer Brothers, Incorporated, which grew to ten stores by 1957. Leopold served as chairman of the board until he and his brothers sold the business to a national chain.

  21. While reading The Thresher dated November 14, 1952 I noticed an article with the term Post Oak Stables. I did some research and found out there used to be both a Polo Association and a stables in a Post Oak Field. I'd love to hear more about this. I know the HPD has their (old) stables on North Post Oak Road. Would that general area be the old Post Oak Stables (and fields)? I believe Jim Abercrombie and Leopold Meyer's Pin Oak Stables was originally located on Post Oak Road? I'll have to find that article again. This might be the original location of Pin Oak Stables. A decade later and the Pin Oak Stables was listed as being on 610/Westpark in Bellaire where the current Pin Oak Middle School, Houston Community College, and Home Depot are.. 5601 W Loop S, Houston, TX 77081. The book "Houston, a history and guide" published in 1942 has this blurb about the fields in Uptown: Polo: Houston Riding and Polo Club, 8M. SW. On Westheimer Rd., Adm. 50c.
