  1. I was browsing The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated September 23, 1964 and came across a business listing for Palms Theatre. Palms Theatre - Sugar Land, Texas 10 Min. Out On S-W Frway. I never even heard of this theater. I don't see anything on the famous cinematreasures.org archive website either. Was this possibly rebranded? Is there an exact address for this place? Looks like it's somewhere off 59 South/Southwest Freeway. Very cool find! Anyone ever been here?
  2. I was browsing The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated December 9, 1948 and came across a business listing for Midget Market located on Kirby Dr. At Sunset Blvd. Did anyone do their grocery shopping here? I'd be interested in any knowledge, or stories. I love all the small, independent grocers. Now days there are 3 big brands that dominate and HEB is on every corner. Very cool building too! Anyone happen to know the architect?
  3. I was browsing The Southwest Citizen dated December 9, 1948 and noticed a full page ad for Huffington's Food Market located at 3642 University Blvd. Did anyone happen to shop here? I'd love to hear some stories.
  4. I was browsing The Bellaire Texan dated December 9, 1948 and noticed a business ad for Guy H. GIbbs Bellaire Drive-In Grocery Store located at 204 N. Rice Ave. Very cool! I've never even heard of this. Anyone recall memories here? Looks like they had another location (possibly including delivery services) at 5104 Cedar Street. "Guy H. Gibbs Your Bellaire Grocer"
  5. I was browsing The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated September 23, 1964 and came across a business listing for Dugan's Drug Store No. 2 located at 5018 Bellaire Blvd. What's the deal with Mading's Drug Stores and Dugan's Drug Stores? Didn't they merge?
  6. I was browsing the newspaper The Thresher dated November 14, 1952 and came across a business ad for Contemporary Arts Museum located at 303 Dallas Ave. I know of three locations of the CAMH. I wonder which one is the original? This could be the first location? 303 Dallas Ave. 6945 Fannin St. 5216 Montrose Blvd. Art Museum Open Sculpture Exhibit The exhibit Sculpture - Directions and Forms open Sunday at the Contemporary Arts Museum, 302 Dallas Avenue. This is the first event at the Allied Arts Festival; Bernhardt Temmel, Director of the University of Houston Art Department assembled the exhibit to show the use of new materials and techniques as a means for a wider range of expression in the field of sculpture.
  7. I was researching historic Houston race courses and came to a website during my research. "The Houston Freeway Drag Strip" http://houstonfreewaydragstrip.com/index.htm On the website it spoke about a Westbury drag strip: Back of the subdivision, before homes were built - what is now Burlinghall Dr was the old drag strip, from Dunlap to Renwick. I'd love to hear more about this. Anyone recall?
  8. Very cool find here! Westheimer Undertakers and Funeral Directors, 1217 Prairie at Caroline. Men standing beside Funeral vehicles parked in front of the building. Date: 1905 Edit: During the early years of the building, the fourth floor (named Westheimer Hall) served as a meeting place for several unions and associations such as the Typographical Union #87, Wood Wire & Metal Lathers International Union Houston Local #224, and the Sharks Benevolent Club.
  9. I was researching Houston skating rinks and I noticed there was a skating rink called Almeda Skate Ranch located at 10750 Almeda Genoa Road. The rink was opened in 1970 and closed on July 26, 2015. J. Norman Malone was the owner. I found the information on a blog here below: http://southbelthouston.blogspot.com/2017/06/south-belt-spot-skate-ranches-almeda.html
  10. I was browsing the newspaper The South Belt Press dated June 28, 1978 and came across a business ad for Kings Hall Stables located at 9655 Hall Road (behind Kirkmont.) Instruction under Capt. Harry E. Whittaker. The current site looks to be a vacant field for water retention? There is also a Private Mini Storage near the area. Are there several types of horse riding? As I am researching the numerous Houston stables I am seeing "English Riding" and "Western Riding." Does anyone remember this place? Share your memories!!
  11. I was browsing the newspaper The Texan dated November 14, 1956 and came across a business ad for Meyer Bros. Department Store located at At Bellaire Blvd. At 3rd St. (Presumably 5002 Bellaire Blvd.) I believe this was a stand a lone building? The current site has a Walgreens. The original building must have been demolished. A little confused about the history of the Meyer Bros. They created two businesses? One was a department store (Meyer Bros.) and the other was a grocery store/market called The White House? There are countless advertisements for Meyer Bros. in the 50s and 60s. If I find a cool ad I'll post it. Pretty much all the same though. Any HAIFers have memories here? Do share!! I found a location list of Meyer Bros. locations. See the below quote.
  12. I was browsing the newspaper The Texan dated January 22, 1986 and came across a business ad for Lucky Chan's Restaurant located at 6628 South Main St. Grand opening. Cantonese - Hunan Cuisine. Did anyone ever eat here? 30 years later, was it as good as the infamous Chinese restaurants a long South Main in the 50s and 60s?
  13. I was browsing the newspaper The Citizen dated May 26, 1948 and came across a business ad for Ballerina Bar located at 8150 South Main St. "The New Look In Houston's Cocktail Bars" featuring Bill Await at the Piano and Solovox. Sizzling Steaks. Anyone recall this place? I never heard of it. Very cool find in the history of South Main!
  14. I was browsing the newspaper The Citizen dated May 26, 1948 and came across a business ad for Gateway Roller Rink located at 8370 South Main St. - "Where O.S.T. Meets S. Main". Was this an earlier location of Hansell's Gateway Swim And Skate Rink? I wonder if the swimming school/club had a different address than the skating rink? I see an address of 8510 South Main St. Was this the same place as the Rolls-Away Roller Rink on South Main? Different name obviously. Possibly a change of ownership?
  15. I was browsing the magazine The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated September 28, 1966 and came across a business ad for Hitching Post Restaurant And Club located at 7433 Bissonnet St. The name of this place is actually famous on HAIF. One poster ( @NotGivinUp ) was absolutely positive there was a Hitching Post Club on South Main St. at Old Spanish Trail. In the infamous thread, there is an informative quote by ( @tinker ): The Hitching Post is a really small beer bar, that holds maybe 30-50 people. It looks like a wooden cabin. It is right next to Prince’s drive-in on South Main, at the intersection with the Old Spanish Trail, where there is a circle now. The girls at the Prince's drive-in serve you on their roller skates. You could get a beer or a coke, Jimmy went there with his Uncle Dan, who had him order “Two beers for two steers”. One day a little airplane crashes into the roof of Prince’s drive-in, right next to The Hitching Post. The Prince’s Drive in was at 8101 South Main St (later the Taco Cabana). The Hitching Post was on the crossing of South Main and Old Spanish Trail. It was just a small wooden beer bar where kids that were unknown got a chance to show their musical abilities and talent was scouted. Nothing fancy. . Perhaps everyone was very confused and it's actually the place on Bissonnet? That is a very big confusion to mistake South Main and Bissonnet though. One business ad during a later time indicates they sold western wear. They sold straw hats and jeans. Maybe the restaurant concept failed and they switched to western wear? The owner was Mena Bonura and the managers were Pat and Sam Bonura. A photo of the building and ad dated September 28, 1966. January 25, 1967. May 30, 1973.
  16. I was browsing the magazine The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated June 22, 1966 and came across a business ad for Christie's Shrimp House located at 10517 South Post Oak Rd. Interesting naming for this location. All the other stores were simply named Christie's Restaurant. Very cool. I never knew this location existed! Anyone ever eat here? Looks like this is the site of the present day Shipley's Donuts on South Post Oak near the 610 entrance ramp.
  17. There was a request of knowledge this week about "King's Hamburgers" on West Bellfort. I was browsing the magazine The Bellaire & Southwestern Texan dated September 15, 1971 and came across a business ad for King's Food Host Restaurant located at 4991 W. Bellfort Ave. Looks like this is the current site of the Kroger Gas Station, or the Gabbanelli Accordions & Imports store.
  18. I was browsing the newspaper The Bellaire Texan dated May 13, 1959 and came across this business ad for Parish Stables located at 9825 Old Richmond Road (now Bissonnet Street.) Bellaire had two stables? That's incredible. I guess it really was vacant land back then.

  20. Does anyone remember this small race track in the 1970s located on Almeda road near Beltway 8? It has since been paved over and an industrial pipe supply business named Tioga Pipe Supply Company, Inc. has been built over it. It's located on Almeda Road in between West Riley Road and White Road. On any historic aerials website you can put the address 14601 Almeda Rd, Houston, TX 77055 and go back in time to the 1970's and see the oval race track. A concert flyers specifies "Fives miles south of Astrodome at Almeda." There used to be a concert venue (or festival) here named Day of Joy which featured Rock & Roll and Pop bands, even ZZ Top played here. On autoracingrecords.com the track is listed as Almedo Speedway. Probably a typo. Almeda Speedway was in operation from 01/01/1970 to ?. The track was designed as a 1/4 mile dirt oval race track. The category of racing was (primarily) midget racing.

  22. You haven't been active on HAIF in 13-years but I found some information about your grandfather. autoracingrecords.com indicates the race track was called Houston Speed Bowl located at 2001 San Bernard St. (later Cullen), across from Buffalo Stadium. Alternative names of the race track are Midget Auto Speedway, Houston Speedway, and Speed Bowl. A book published in 1942 titled "Houston, a history and guide" says the name and address was Midget Auto Speedway located at Calhoun Ave. and St. Bernard St. I believe autoracingrecords.com has more accurate information as they have auto racing records from all over the world and that's solely what they focus on. Houston Speed Bowl was in operation from 10/31/1937 to 07/30/1942. The track was designed as a 1/5 mile dirt oval race track. Your grandfather, Lou Turbeville, raced on the following dates and in the category of TORA midgets. 1939-09-21 1940-08-08 1940-10-03 1941-05-01 1941-05-22 1941-06-05 1942-04-02 Sources: https://www.autoracingrecords.com/tracks.php?lid=09571 http://archive.org/stream/houstonahistory00writmiss/houstonahistory00writmiss_djvu.txt
  23. A new 8-story parking garage should take out this grassy area (and the surface lot next door?) TDLR registration: Facility Name: Health Sciences Parking Garage Location Address: 1920 Wyndale Street Start Date: 3/1/2023 Estimated Cost: $30,600,000 Scope of Work: Construct a new 8 story parking garage with 821 total spaces (17 accessible) to serve a future Health Sciences Building as well as the existing Jamail Specialty Care Center on the site. Project also includes a shipping and receiving facility for the. Square Footage: 310,000 ft 2 A City of Houston plan review permit was pulled yesterday.
  24. Plan review permit was pulled for the new parking garage. Still don't know exactly what is happening here. The Baylor St. Lukes McNair Campus already has a garage. The garage actually just went under a multimillion dollar remodel as well. This new 8-story garage must be for the other "campus" located across the street? If that's the case, what's currently under construction behind the McNair campus where the surface lot is?
  25. I was looking for old skating rinks in the Houston area and found a Facebook group of people who used to visit Carousel Skating Rink at 9190 Old Katy Rd. Regarding the Rainbow Roller Rink located at 925 Tidwell Rd. When did this open? The book program is dated 1978. When did this close? Any memories here? Any pictures other than a book?
