  2. woah! This building from the 1870s is just stunning! The carvings/detail of the facade! Edit: The building was designed by Eugene T. Heiner! I'm not exactly sure of the "41 Main" address. This was probably renamed somewhere in the early 1900s to something like "401 Main". Looks like the T.W. House Bank was founded in 1838, and a significant date is 1889. 4. The Post Oak School in Bellaire was built in 1985. Here's a newspaper article about it from the newspaper The Texan dated March 13, 1985. School construction starts A new school facility is going up in Bellaire. Construction began last week on a $4.5 million school building for the Post Oak School (formerly Post Oak Montessori School) across the street from there present location at 6300 Ave. B and Bissonnet Road. The new 32,000 square-foot school facility will sit on 3-1/2 acres located on the north-west corner of the intersection of Avenue B and Bissonnet Road. Completion of the facility is scheduled for the January 1986, said acting director Patty Thompson. The school will have the capacity for 400 students, which is approximately double the current enrollment of the school. The school site will include a two-story administration building, approximately nine classrooms, and will feature a training center for the Texas Montessori Institute which trains educators to teach the Montessori methods-- Model of the school:
  5. Weirdly enough, I've never seen the (2nd) original The Post Oak School talked about on HAIF. Thought I would create a thread. Did anyone ever go to this school? That block has a historical location! The school campus next door, Episcopal High School, is one of the most expensive schools in Houston! I know of 3 different The Post Oak Schools 1 - The original on Westheimer & Post Oak in the early 1900s. 2 - 4600 Bissonnet Street in Bellaire. 3 - Their new high school, located at 1010 Autrey Street in Montrose. https://www.postoakschool.org/
  6. Found the address and building photo! The address (not in the photo) is 1002 Main Street. Apparently, that is. I don't have a map (currently) that verifies it. So amazing. Great find here! 7. There has been some discussion regarding the (current) TMC laundry facilities down Fannin Street. Saw this social media post this week. Just amazing volumes of laundry! Couldn't even imagine. During the pandemic, volume dropped steeply at the Texas Medical enter Hospital Laundry Co-Op in Houston. TMCHL is now performing above pre-pandemic levels, packing and shipping over 800,000 lbs. of laundry a week--
  8. Phase 1 of Meyerland Crossing has started!! I could move this to Going Up! since there's a 4-story MF wrap planned. Still on the front page of CRP, might be one of their most anticipated projects? What about the last parcel? Did CRP buy the whole 17-acres? 9. Never seen this on HAIF. Very cool! It looks like the Stewart Building was the building that housed the Hermann Hospital estate in the 1920’s. The estate was responsible for the business and funding aspect of running the hospital. According to a notation on the back, the estate was on the top floor and the building was later sold to Gordon Jewelry, at which point the estate moved to the Hermann Professional Building. Amazing building! The attention to detail, the "S" carvings! Ground Floor Stewart Building Stewart Abstract & Title Co. John B. Stewart - Pres. A.A. Brush. Secy. & Manager. 10. Some real history here! The St. Joseph's County Hospital burned down in 1894. This is the story. From the book The Episcopacy of Nicholas Gallagher, Bishop of Galveston, 1882–1918. Catholic Building for had been used by the Franciscan priests when they staffed St. Vincent's Parish, by Ursuline Sisters fro New Orleans when they staffed St. Vincent's School (1867-1869), and by these Sisters when they likewise staffed the same school (1869-1873.) The Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament from Victoria had temporarily lived there before moving to Incarnate Word Academy on Crawford Street (April-November, 1873.) St. Joseph's Infirmary was opened to the public on June 1, 1887. Two years later the medical officer for the indigent sick was impressed with the methods of caring for the sick. After the county judge toured the hospital, Mother St. Louis was requested to receive the indigent sick of Harris County. There was quite a bit of dissatisfaction with the old Houston Infirmary on Washington Avenue. Mother St. Luis agreed. The sisters soon expanded their facilities. A new three-story building, St. Joseph's County Hospital, was erected across the street. The sisters were paid 50 cents a day for indigent patients. Private patients paid two dollars a day. The diagnosis of patients with smallpox led to the construction of a smallpox hospital in an abandoned cemetery. There were three hundred victims of smallpox. Approximately sixty died. All of the Sisters volunteered to help at the “pest house.” Four from the growing staff of Sisters were chosen. Unfortunately, Mrs. Flanagan's Boarding House next to the hospital caught fire (October 16, 1894.) Before long, the entire block was in flames. This was no match for the one fire engine the city owned. Two Sisters lost their lives, and a third was seriously wounded, though she survived. This was devastation to the Sisters. In addition to the-- Photo of the hospital that burned down:
  11. woah! Has anyone seem this amazing house on historic aerials or Google earth? Shame it was knocked down. From the neighborhood newsletter called The Old Braeswood News dated Summer 2010. The home would have been built in the 1950s, I believe 1954 to be exact. Short paragraph from the article detailing the 1954 home: Issac and Mildred, his wife, often visited friends in Old Braeswood, and lingered at the park with their sons, Branard and Raymond. In 1947, Ike bought a triple lot that spanned the back of the park, but did not build on it until 1951, about when Ray was entering Rice University as an undergraduate in architecture. Rice didn't have dorm capacity for students from Houston, and Ray moved into the house with his parents [Three years later, Ike's brother Samuel built a house at 2355 Kelving, the peninsular site bounded by Kelving and Glenn Haven. That site is now an empty lot.] 2004: 2023, present day:

  14. wow! I had no idea this was here! I thought there was a K&L clinic a long the side of Fannin Street? The information was found on the 1955 Sanborn Map and the Texas State Journal of Medicine, Volume 51, Number 7, July 1955. The clinic looks to have been on the opposite side of the South Main Shopping Center, across from the Medical Towers. Kelsey & Leary Clinic 6611 Travis / Houston, Texas / JU 0628 M.P. 16. Road In Between South Main Street & Old Main Street Road. A decade before Speer Park on Speer Drive, there was a long road connecting South Main Street to Old Main Street Road. Here's the unknown road dating back to 1944. Any ideas on what this road was called? It's one street after present-day McNee Road. The road hits the corner of the Main Street Auto Speedway. Here's the road surrounded by the present-day streets. The road crosses Kirby Drive. Edit: A decade after this, in the 1950s, there was an amusement park called Speer Park located off of South Main on Speer Drive. The road aligns with the unknown road. Seems like the road was abandoned by the city and then remade to Speer Drive? Speer Drive did not go all the way through to connect to Old Main Street Road. It stopped about half way.
  17. Friend is getting her Masters here. As you can tell, nobody really talks about this (building) and school. Does anyone have experience with the school, and staff, here? I asked why she didn't go to Anderson's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. She said it was too expensive. Seems like it would be expensive indeed! I wonder if the TWU Houston campus would ever expand? They used to have several buildings near Methodist's campus but all that's left is this new building built 19 years ago.
  18. The roads of TMC Helix Park are now open and operational! Fencing around the site now has been removed! I took a walk around the campus to check things out and wow!! The TMC3 campus was designed so well. Very impressive!! I believe further construction development has been placed on hold. Trailers being wrapped and removed from the site. Seems like they are fencing the remaining parcels and coming to a stop. 22. I'm a little late to the party, but wow!! Amazing renderings and graphics. Hopefully it really does start within the next few months. The new RO logo/insignia is really fancy!! Reminds me of the Rolls Royce logo! I really like the small buildings attached to the base of the residential tower. They look elegant. It appears the jenga style office building was changed. It's now shorter and has darker colors. Whatever works to get it built! Let's go!!
  23. Found this postcard on Ebay. Very much related, but the hospital is unnamed. This could be a different hospital. Very cool history here! A hospital in Camp Logan, Houston, Texas
