  1. Is it the city doing the repairs or the Midtown TIRZ? Generally, I don't believe the city is responsible for installing or maintaining sidewalks.
  2. It's quite a stretch to call what was running prior to 1994 a commuter train service. In fact, it's more than a stretch. From 1989 to 1994, a privately owned enterprise offered weekend rail trips to Galveston. Presumably, it was not economically successful.
  3. Houston? A Republican mayor? No. Not since 1981.
  4. Crisis averted. ;-) There are at least 2 Starbucks in Bellaire.
  5. According to the project's website, I don't think that has ever been the timetable. Two years ago we had a discussion in this thread about the meaning of the stated "Fall 2017 Completion". The website still shows construction being completed in the 4th quarter 2017 and says they are on schedule.
  6. That's a pretty good-looking building. What is the status of this project? Is it actually happening?
  7. Update on the redevelopment of First National Bank tower/Elm Place/The Drever: Lender behind $380M project in downtown Dallas says developer has 'defaulted' on loan https://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/news ... -says.html I can't get past the paywall, but the headline says it all.
  8. Besides the overall awfulness of the Chronicle, my biggest pet peeve about Houston is the general ignorance of Houstonians about their city and the relentless focus on what we don't have/haven't done, to the willful exclusion of all of the things we do have and have done. As H-Town Man said, we have quite a long history of being able to "dig holes", as you put it.
  9. There is no lockup facility that would have to be relocated for this project. I don't know what Sunstar could be talking about.
  10. Denver? Seriously? I've made the drive to the Denver Airport many times both before and after they had rail service. Trust me. There is zero discernible difference in the traffic. I am being completely factual, as usual. And you are arguing against straw men. Yes, mass transit can be and should be a factor in our city (and is a factor in our city, but I agree it should be a larger factor. To say that there are no examples of cities where mass transit has eliminated or significantly reduced congestion is not to say that mass transit has no role.
  11. Exactly right. And I doubt you'll find many studies even claiming that mass transit will significantly reduce congestion. I support mass transit, but we should not promote it on the basis that it will reduce congestion, because it will not.
  12. ROFL. Show us a list of cities where congestion has been eliminated or even significantly reduced by the implementation of mass transit. Oh, that's right, you already did. For everyone's convenience, I'll repeat the list here:
  13. Because nothing ever happens in Houston, right?
  14. We have a Residence Inn and a Homewood Suites.
  15. Better yet, I don't think it would even take the UH-D building, just small parking lot on the west side of San Jacinto, north of UH-D's pumping station building.
  16. Jjust curious how you know this. The flyer and renderings make it appear that the parking lot in the renderings is the current Fitzgerald's parking lot and the building replaces one bungalow (perhaps not coincidentally the one that has the address 2714 White Oak Dr.)
