  1. Yes, and Finger's development has ground floor retail. But as Downtownian posted, Finger's project preceded the incentives program.
  2. Yeah, it's kind of hard to think of a better word for it. That is such a bad policy it's a little hard to believe it's true. Even coming from government, that is surprisingly brain-dead.
  3. Todd Interests, which is nearing completion of the redevelopment of One Dallas Center in downtown Dallas into apartments and office space, is in "hot in pursuit of another development deal – this one in Houston." They are looking to do more creative redevelopments and one of the deals on the table is the Petroleum Building (more recently known as the Great Southwest Building) in downtown Houston. They are looking to redevelop it into residential or hospitality. Yes, this interesting news about downtown Houston real estate redevelopment can only be found in the Dallas Morning News.
  4. Doesn't the 800 Bell project involve a lot more than just hanging a new curtain wall on the building?
  5. From the linked article (I know it's not often one finds useful information in a Chronicle article, but once in a while...): "In order to receive the reimbursement, the developers have one year from the date they sign the incentive agreement to get the project into the city permitting department, after which time they have three years to get a certificate of occupancy."
  6. Excellent question. I'm thinking that generally trains are perhaps less attractive targets than airplanes for terrorists. At least so far, HSR in the UK has not replicated the "nightmare" security issues of airports and I believe the same is true in Europe and Japan.
  7. ^ for the love of God, people. There has never been a better reason than Slick Vik to familiarize yourself with the ignore feature. ;-)
  8. The OffCite article linked on the website has this: "According to Springs of Texas, Volume 1, Harris County once had swimming holes with “pure white sand and clean and limpid water.” Beauchamps Springs, now beneath I-10 or possibly trickling out on its margin, was a popular swimming spot on White Oak Bayou."
  9. The problem with the "well thought out reply", as with so much of the content and comments on Swamplot, is the author was so interested in snark and showing how much he knows that he couldn't be bothered to learn anything at all about the proposal. Nowhere do the swimming hole proponents propose that the swimming hole be stream-fed. (And, Nate, the "Houston Needs a Swimming Hole" idea has not proposed to use the bayou.) http://www.houstonneedsaswimminghole.com/#naturalpool
  10. I didn't think there is any parking structure within the hotel building, but looking at Morris Architects description it appears there is an 8-level 750 space parking garage. (I thought the hotel's parking was all going to be in the building being built across Avenida de las Americas.) In addition to apparently including parking, the box will contain the pool and three floors of conference facilities, etc on top of a floor of lobby/restaurants etc.
  11. That is unfair with regard to his time as mayor. He was quite focused on and accomplished a lot in making the city of Houston, including the inner city more liveable, by reducing crime, raising the standards of the parks and making infrastructure improvements. I recall him saying (I'm paraphrasing): If I can't provide a place where people prefer to live when the alternative is an hour-long commute, then shame on me.
  12. I'm pretty sure the answer to all three questions is: No one knows. Simon has been completely silent.
  13. I was under the impression one is not allowed to build anything within 3 feet of the lot line. But I cannot find anything to back that up right now. Will be interesting to hear what the CoH permitt office tells you.
  14. I think Midway also owns and manages apartment buildings, so I'm not sure there's really much reason to be super excited about this
  15. Havana is as close or closer to Houston/Galveston than many current cruise destinations.
  16. Did OTB really need anyone else's help to go out of business? ;-) It looks like maybe they've finally given up on the idea that they can compete in the Houston market.
  17. That is the county courthouse complex. This thread is about municipal (city) courts and police headquarters.
  18. As usual, you got it somewhat close to half right. 1. United will build the first of its Terminal B north concourses. 2. United moves out of "upper Terminal C" (Gates 14-23). At that time (2017), United's exclusive rights to "upper Terminal C" are ended. They will not "move back to" upper Terminal C. United will be able to use the gates in the new Terminal D, but they will not "move back" in the sense of re-occupying the gates in an exclusive arrangement. In fact "upper Terminal C" will no longer exist. All of C north except for the B-C connector (where gates 24-27 are located) will be torn down, to be replaced by portions of the new Terminal D. 3. As mentioned, step 3 is to tear down the existing Terminal C north, Gates 14-23 and build the new Terminal D, pier D-1. Further steps follow. It's an extraordinarily complex project. Lots of information available here.

    IAH Vs. DFW

I guess they are changing things fast. Last time I looked (which was not that long ago) they were still operating as two separate airlines. Thanks for the update.

Thanks. Good catch on Volaris. Not sure how it happened. I had Etihad, Emirates and Korean listed and you'll note the numbering still reflects their presence. Thanks for noting their absence.
  22. The plans for Terminal B North have changed some, but at least the initial concourse is definitely no longer in limbo. The initial B North concourse will be built with the pier position just a little east of where the Marriott Hotel is located. (it will actually be a little closer to Terminal C than to B.) It will be connected to the west end of the current C North concourse. This all part of (or actually a precursor to) the redevelopment of Terminal D. Not sure when construction will start, but United is required to move out of the C North Pier that holds Gates C14-C23 by some time in 2017, so the new B North concourse has to be done before that.
