  1. Let's not get too carried away here. There are breaks in the Chicago street grid, and <GASP> gated neighborhoods too.
  2. ^ I guess the people with whom I communicate are more in tune or something. I've heard EADO used in any number of conversations and not once has anyone had a follow up question. And I guess you could say the same thing about any new names being "worthless" to use until they become part of the common lexicon. It was probably once worthless to refer to the Memorial City area. It was probably once worthless to refer to City Centre (and probably still is to a fair number of Houstonians). It was probably once worthless to refer to the Greenway Plaza area or Greenspoint. It was probably once worthless to refer to the Energy Corridor. Nevertheless, new place names are invented and become part of the common lexicon both here and in other cities on a regular basis. I suppose there are some that never really make it (Neartown is probably a good example of one that is not really going to make it... partly because it covers a broad amorphous area that is better described by its individual parts.) My question is, why the hostility to new place names on this forum?
  3. It's a pretty-good sized chunk of land... at least 2.25 acres (1 1/2 times the size of a downtown block). The site currently has two buildings (124,000 square foot office building and a parking garage) and the buildings take up less than 1/2 of the property. Three buildings will be able to fit on the property pretty easily. How is access going to be an issue? It has good street frontage on Waugh and on Feagan.
  4. Except the historic Frostown is not in EADO. Do people really have trouble figuring out how to pronounce EADO?

See page 8: TxDOT and Uptown are in the early development stages of an elevated dedicated bus or HOV facility in the median of IH 610 from the Northwest TransitCenter to Post Oak Boulevard (Figure A-4). The elevated dedicated bus or HOV facility would replace the majority of the mixed traffic bus operation north of the Project (the Connection to METRO’s Northwest Transit Center) as shown in Figure A-1 with a grade separated, dedicated transit facility. Also, TxDOT announced just last week that they will be providing $25 million to build a dedicated bus lane along Loop 610, ensuring the second piece of a planned bus rapid transit corridor in the Uptown area.
  6. Yes, Eado is part of the East End. There are other neighborhoods in the East End as well. Does it also offend you when residents of Eastwood say they live in Eastwood rather than saying they live in the East End? My point was that, while true, it is not terribly helpful to tell someone you are going out to the East End or you live in the East End. If one is going out to bars in Eado, it gives listeners a lot better information to say that, rather than to say you are going out to the East End. As I said earlier, it is not hard at all to say East End, it just doesn't convey very much information. What is so hard about saying Eado? I cannot understand the fear of so many on this forum of having place names for neighborhoods in Houston.

  9. It's not hard at all to call it the East End; it's just not very helpful to do so. The East End takes in a whole lot more territory than just Eado, so it is not a terribly helpful descriptor. Depending on where off Milby your friends live, it might be a good thing they call it the East End... most of Milby is not in Eado. ;-) FWIW, I have heard a number of people call it Eado. You might as well start getting used to it.

I think it is because in the Houston market they have developed a hybrid store that incorporates a lot of the features and products from Central Market into their stores that are branded as HEB ____ Marktet(s). 15 of HEB's 60 stores in the Houston area are Markets.   13. ^^^ Exactly rigtht: Just to put some numbers to it: Both the Houston and DFW metro areas added more people between 2010 and 2012 than reside in the entire Bryan/College Station metropolitan area. (Houston added 245,000l; DFW added 241,000; Bryan/College Station had a total 2012 population of 236,000.) Each of the Houston and DFW metro areas have more than 25 times the population of the Bryan/College Station metro area, and both Houston and DFW are growing faster than Bryan/College Station.
  14. With an asking price of $180,000 and already pending, I would say it has already been touched by the rapid gentrification. Great location; lots of appreciation to come for that neighborhood, I think. Your guess as to the age appears to be correct. According to the listing, the Appraisal District has it listed as being built in 1930. But the description of the property says "around 1890".
  15. "This far into the east end..."??? It's two blocks from Hwy 59. There is development already occurring much further into the east end than this.
  16. Good point. And given that United has shown few signs that they know how to operate an airline, the chances of their being able to efficiently run a railroad are minimal. ;-)
  17. I don't know what Federal Law you are talking about. But I do know that what actually killed the Texas TGV was the lack of public financing from the state. There were two teams competing for the franchise. One team was up front about requiring some level of public subsidy. The other team claimed to not need any public subsidy, won the franchise, and then could not do the job, because, lo and behold, they needed a public subsidy, which was not forthcoming.
  18. The good news is... the Alley is getting an external cleanup as part of its current refurbishing project.
  19. Demolishing the jail is not going to happen. I don't know why people keep wasting time and energy typing about it. Further, the importance of the jail to the future or lack of future of that area is wildly overstated. There is no reason a jail cannot peacefully co-exist with nearby mixed uses, including residential. (To the extent it really is a problem, it would seem that putting them on an island is the perfect solution.) We have a jail on San Jacinto at Texas that has condos across the street, and 2 apartment projects currently under construction and 2 more under development within 3 blocks, plus 2 new office buildings, a high school and a couple new hotels are under development, all within 3 blocks of the jail. As to the idea of a long narrow park stretching east... Here you go. As to the idea of a better path along the Bayou... take a look.
