  1. I don't see a massive staircase in your picture. But, FWIW, I believe the plan is for a walkway winding up around the "mound", and a water feature coming down the center of the side seen in your picture. See renderings here
  2. I'm thinking it's a temporary situation. No need for panic.
  3. agree with all that... except that it's unlikely to move to the convention center parking garage site... that is slated to start construction 4th Q 2014 (before the residential tower). Perhaps they'll move it to the fenced-off parking lot at Capitol, Rusk and Avenida de las Americas. But then one wonders why they didn't put it there to begin with ... kinda odd.
  4. I think the reason is simple: no money. Even if we got the federal money, I don't think we have the money to fund the local half.
  5. That is a business services facility. The Sysco headquarters is on Enclave Parkway, near Eldridge Parkway.
  6. FWIW, Gate D-9 is going to be converted to handle Class VI aircraft (A-380). Supposed to start work this month, I believe.
  7. And some of those garages are really really ugly. That, and one of them is in the carved-out remains of a former grand movie palace. Seems like an odd thing to post as an aspirational model. ;-)
  8. Yeah, if only we thought big like Dallas does. Maybe then we could have 11 foreign flag carriers like DFW does, instead of the measly 15 we currently have. Maybe if we thought big like Dallas we could have been the second airport in Texas with A380 service, instead of the first. Maybe if we thought big like Dallas we could have 50-ish non-stop foreign destinations instead of only the 70-ish that we have. Or maybe we could have had less than 7 million international passengers in 2013 instead of the 9 Million we had. Dang'it, why can't we could do everything like Dallas does? ;-)
  9. Besides the fairly regular TMC philanthropically-funded projects: Beck Building at MFAH. Soon-to-come new building and new Glassel Art School Building at MFAH Continued development of the Menil Discovery Green Buffalo Bayou Park Bayou greenways project Houston Ballet Center for Dance Nau Center (as alluded to) Total restoration/refurbishment/improvement of Hermann Park Doubling the size of Houston Museum of Natural Science AD Players Theater breaking ground this summer MATCH in midtown just started construction Rice U Opera House to start soon Alley Theater is being completely refurbished/cleaned/remodeled/improved. Childrens Museum was pretty recently doubled in size. I'm sure I'm missing many others.
  10. Fortune 500 came out today: Houston metro area now has 26 Fortune 500 companies. That is up from 25 on the 2013 list and I think is probably a new all-time high for Houston. Our count of 26 is without counting NRG, which is listed as headquartered in New Jersey, but technically is dual-headquartered in NJ and Houston. It also does not include Occidental, which is relocating to Houston, or the possible addition of another Fortune 500 by the National Oilwell Varco spinoff. The State of Texas has 52, same as last year. D/FW has 18, same as last year. Here is the list for Houston: 1) 6/4 Phillips 66 2) 47/45. ConocoPhillips 3) 56/64 Enterprise Products Partners L.P. 4) 63/65 Sysco 5) 70/ — Plains GP Holdings L.P. 6) 103/106 Halliburton 7) 131/144 National Oilwell Varco 8) 132/135 Baker Hughes 9) 179/167 Apache 10) 188/174 Marathon Oil 11) 202/207 Anadarko Petroleum 12) 203/233 EOG Resources 13) 206/265 Kinder Morgan 14) 207/200 Waste Management 15) 286/310 Cameron International 16) 307/343 Group 1 Automotive 17) 333/344 CenterPoint Energy 18) 360/334 KBR 19) 368/417 FMC Technologies 20) 395/435 Targa Resources 21) 396/397 Quanta Services 22) 414/459 Calpine 23) 461/475 Spectra Energy 24) 478/451 MRC Global 25) 485/544 Buckeye Partners 26) 491/535 Noble Energy
  11. Note that the variance hearing was scheduled for more than a year ago. Even numbers are on the west side of the street. I would guess the office building proposal has been replaced by this condo proposal. 4520 seems to be the empty lot.
  12. The Houston self - loathing on this forum never ceases to amaze. Contemporaneous statements from people who handled the HQ site search for Exxon (and it was Exxon at the time, not ExxonMobil) made it very clear Houston was never considered and neither was any other city that had a significant Exxon operation. Just like with the more recent Boeing HQ relocation, they required the HQ to be separated from their operations and other offices.
  13. Well, the May Development Map said construction is to start 1st Quarter 2015... I think you can come in off the ledge. ;-)
  14. That is not unusual. Period. There's nothing unique to Houston about that.
  15. I don't see what the problem is. If one is concerned about apartments or other buildings being near one's grave, one should not buy a plot near the property line of the cemetery. If one is concerned about living near a grave, one should not rent an apartment on that side of the building. If the cemetery is concerned with buildings being too near its graves, the cemetery should have a buffer zone. I cannot imagine any justification for imposing burdens on adjoining property owners.
  16. 1. By definition, they would not be "above market" purchase prices. 2. I have not looked at the docs and don't know how they payments would flow through. I briefly looked for the information yesterday but couldn't find it. Can you provide me with a link or directions to the docs?
  17. Yes, it gives average density for the contiguous urbanized (developed) area.
