  1. Correct. It is a pointless ranking that gets far more attention than deserved. They merely count the offices of the top 25 accountancy, advertising, law and management consultancy firms and the top 75 banking/finance and insurance firms. That's all the rankings show us: which cities have the most offices of these particular firms in these particular industries. Connectivity and leadership in a global industry that produces stuff that people need every day . . . completely irrelevant. ;-)
  2. No. The Stowers building is not connected in any way to BG Group Place. Hines has had nothing to do with the Stowers Building. It was re-done by the Spire Group, which seems to have had a notable lack of success in its real estate endeavors. They should probably sell it to someone who knows what they are doing.
  3. It's not a rumor. Norwegian announced some time ago that they will begin cruising out of the Port of Houston's Bayport Cruise Terminal in 2014. Princess Cruises started cruising from the terminal today.
  4. The interior renovation took place in the same general time period as the addition of Galleria IV.
  5. The interior of the Houston Galleria has already been fully remodeled. Agree the exterior could use a facelift.
  6. From the HBJ article: "Simon’s plans also include upgrades to the interior, exterior and parking decks of the mall." Seems pretty clear (and those words are straight from Simon's press release). I think the "extensive structural renovations" of Galleria III is really a demolition of the current Galleria III and Macy's on Sage structures and construction of a new structure for Sak's (and possibly a residential high-rise) in their place. I am wondering about the conversion of the current 3-story Saks store building into a new 2-level mall wing. What do they plan to do with the current third level space?
  7. What makes you think that the parking garage faces Main? I'm trying to figure out what angle we are viewing and cannot find any very strong clues.
  8. To clarify your clarification ;-) The upstream portion of the former ConocoPhillips is actually still named "ConocoPhillips", not "Conoco." So we now have: ConocoPhillips (an independent e&p company) Phillips 66 (a refining, marketing & pipeline company) Chevron (an integerated super major) Chevron Phillips (a chemical company)
  9. JW Marriott 806 Main Holiday Inn Flagship (Savoy) Marriott Marquis Springhill Suites (Humble Tower) Hyatt Place Hampton Inn Homewood Suites That's 7. Not sure what the eighth one would be.
  10. It's more accurate that it is estimated at $68 billion, up from $35.8 billion (and that actually understates the increase in the estimated price. The estimate had actually gone from $35.8 billion up to $70 billion for the full build option (all in 2013 dollars, $98.5 Billion in YOE (Year of Expenditure) dollars)). Then they came up with the "blended system" plan and brought the estimated cost back down to the current $68.4 Billion (YOE dollars). The only reason the estimated cost is "down" is because they took stuff out of the plan. And as you say, it still just an estimated cost.
  11. Agreed. Let's not repeat the mistakes of earlier eras (the 1960s-70s), when it was thought that all buildings must be updated to the then-current "look". Who wants a downtown filled with buildings of all the same style?
  12. Wow. Negative about the project's announcement and negative about the project's cancellation. Are you aiming for a personal best? ;-) There are so many possible reasons for a project's cancellation that it is a bit of a stretch to draw any meaning from it as to our entire city's "being there" or not.
  13. ^ Cool. Glad to hear they are going forward with this. With Metro having gone silent on the project for so long, I was afraid the project had been scrapped.

  18. ^ Great news! Glad to see you noticed that, similar to the cities you routinely tout as models, Houston is expanding its rail too. ;-)
  19. Relax. No one is trying to claim we are the BOSS based on a list of fountains. Just compiling a list of Houston's fountains for comparison and out of curiosity. I enjoyed the KC list you posted and am glad that someone in KC had the pride in their city to compile the list (such a list in Houston would obviously be dismissed as "stupid"). KC has a nice collection of fountains, most of which even appear to have water in them ;-) What is sad is the constant self-loathing of so many Houstonians. Why must we dismiss any list or claims made about Houston as "stupid," but lists and claims made by other cities (like, for example, "the most fountains of any city outside Rome") are apparently to remain unquestioned and uncompared? We do ourselves no favors when we refuse to be aware of, recognize or acknowledge what we have in Houston.
  20. The Rodeo only bought part of the site (about 1/2 IIRC)
  21. I don't think so. Continental indeed owned a majority of Copa at one time, but I'm pretty sure they had sold all of their interest in Copa prior to the merger with United. (They do still have the similar livery and use MileagePlus.)
