  1. Interesting aside: SAS once had a large ownership interest in Continental Airlines.
  2. LOL You noticed that too, eh? (It is on the 60th floor, not "atop the 75 story building" as the Chron would have you believe.)
  3. FWIW, Houston started with the one per block kiosk arrangement around 2005.

  5. Yes. Seriously. It's a fountain. It's on the list. Get over it.
  6. Those are pretty cool. And, Editor, your attempt to dis Houston falls flat. Houston long ago replaced the vast majority of its individual meters in favor of the one per block kiosk type.
  7. I thought they (the owners) had said they did not yet know what they would do with the building.

  9. I had not forgotten Galveston, just had not gotten to it yet. Please contribute listings as you can. (and if one looks carefully at the pictures of the Kansas City fountains, I'm not so sure "working" is even a requirement. Several of KC's look bone-dry.)
  10. Again, the Kansas City list also includes suburban fountains, so metro area it is.

  12. No one actually said anything about the fountains being "public". This list was started as a comparison to Kansas City's list of fountains, which includes fountains in shopping centers and other privately-owned fountains and also includes suburban fountains. I have included all fountains that are in locations that are generally visible by the public. Since I do not see any indoor fountains in KC's list, I have not included indoor fountains on our list either. Feel free to add the thousands more fountains all around the metro area of which you are aware. ;-)

  14. I just wrote it from a combination of memory and a little bit of google searching. I invite contributions of additional fountains I have overlooked/haven't gotten to.
  15. As usual, the "facts" you present are not facts at all. Singapore's actual goal is for 8 in 10 households to be within a 10-minute walk of a rail station by the year 2030. Ambitious, but quite different from what you represented. Also noteworthy: Singapore's total population is 5.3 Million, almost 1 Million less than the Houston metro area. It has all of 1.2 million households. It is the second most-densely populated sovereign state in the world, with an average density of 7437 people per square mile. It's relevance for discussing rail in Houston: pretty close to zero. ;-)
  16. I think we have KC beaten. Would love to see a similar website for Houston. Marcus Allen, that should be the first step in your plan. Inventory and promote what we already have. :-) I'll start the inventory: 1. Scanlan Fountain (Sam Houston Park, downtown) 2. Smith Fountain (Smith at Clay, downtown) 3. 17. Really? They like to call themselves the city of fountains or some such, but I've been to KC many many times and never saw any great number of fountains and cannot now recall any that were particularly noteworthy. I personally think Houston already has KC beat in the fountain department.
  18. I didn't much care for the idea of the 35 story apartment/office building planned by Trammel Crow and I am much happier with this building proposal. (As someone else said above, I would prefer they did not take the street r-o-w, but, oh well.) This will not block the views or light from the stadium nearly as much as a 35 story building would have. I'm not sure it will even be visible above the railroad track from the lower level seats.
  19. Two thoughts: (1) Union Station is 5 stories, not 4. (2) Union Station is attached to the ballpark, while the 7 story structure will be across the street, about 200 feet further from the point of view than Union Station.
  20. I think you are confusing this with 609 Main (the Hines project). Hines has said they plan to finalize their design in the 4th quarter 2013.
  21. ^ Barring a worldwide cataclysmic economic collapse, I think you can pretty much count on this one happening.
  22. ^ There will not be a shareholder vote. Chevron is continuing the planning. They are scheduled to make the final investment decision I believe mid-2014 with construction to start 3rd quarter 2014, IIRC.
