  1. Please, please, PLEASE read the descriptions of the plans for the redo. Once all renovation is complete, storefronts along Dallas will be lined with outdoor patios...
  2. One idea that is being considered/will be considered is to have Metro rail come to the Central rental car location on JFK and either stop there, with a switch to a future airport rail to the terminals or continue on with Metro equipment going direct to the terminals. The airport Master Plan calls for a central terminal to be built to which the rail service would go. Regardless, there is nothing about the layout that makes it not conducive to deliver a "large number of people" to a centralized location. As has been noted, we already have all the terminals connected by two different rail systems that can easily manage the distribution of the "large number of people" to the various terminals. See, for example, O'Hare Airport, which has a multi-terminal airport with one rail stop. (I put "large number of people" in quotes, because, at least relative to the number of people who come and go from IAH every day, the rail will not likely deliver a large number of people.)
  3. Swtsig told us in the 42 Story Museum District Apartment Tower thread that "Hines' downtown residential is a done deal."
  4. Agreed. But keep in mind that there is at least an even chance that Nativehoustonian has misreported what was said.
  5. ^ That and Houston House was built at a time when ceilings were 8 feet high. Skyhouse will probably have higher ceilings.
  6. Who said there are not going to be any major structural changes?
  7. Didn't the Winhall go condo some years back? That would make it very difficult to redevlop... not impossible of course, but very difficult.
  8. ^ Agreed, when it's Hines' project and they are the owner and developer. But when they are just "involved" (i.e. being project manager), they have no control of the design quality and all bets are off. Having said that, from what we've heard out of Hilcorp (which isn't much I admit), I think we can expect a quality project.
  9. Sadly, Hines' "involvement" in no way guarantees a good project. They were involved with the hideous new parking garage on Main Street just a few years ago.
  10. Agreed. That is why I allowed that perhaps the plans have changed. Clearly, one or both of these groups has incorrect information posted on their website/facebook page... ;-) It is also possible they are making the rounds of civic groups around town to build support for the Botanic Gardens. There are a lot of confusing signals. There are earlier bits of information that say it was planned for Herman Brown Park. Both Cullinan Park and Gus Wortham have master plans that do not include Botanic Gardens. Both are listed as "current projects" on the Houston Park Board's website. It would be great if you could follow up with a fellow civic club member and get the latest scoop.
  11. My understanding is that their proposed location is in Cullinan Park, not Gus Wortham Park. Perhaps there has been a change of plans. I note that the Idylwood Civic Club's Facebook page says the speaker is slated for the September 17 meeting, not the meeting earlier this week, so maybe little frau can attend and update us.
  12. http://blog.chron.com/primeproperty/2013/04/developers-announce-plans-to-reinvent-houston-pavilions/ Renovations can involve pretty significant construction, as this one does.
  13. It was a little sloppy to be talking about multitenant buildings and then suddenly throw Chevron in there. But that's Houston "journalism". I think 609 Main is now expected top be 1 Million square feet, rather than 800,000. That makes the 60% number closer to making sense (and maybe 609 Main is going to be 1.1 Million square feet).
  14. No. You are not confused. (Except perhaps the 29 story part) An affiliate of Hilcorp owns the property. Rumor was that Hilcorp had shown its employees renderings of a "regular looking office building over 20 stories high." We were also told here that it would be 23 stories, elliptical shaped. Take the rumors for what they are worth. ;-)
  15. As Ricco already mentioned, NYC, Boston, Chicago and Atlanta do not have express service from their airports to downtown. Nor do Phoenix, Washington DC, San Francisco, Portland, or Phildelphia (in other words, none of the cities nativehoustonian listed). The closest is probably Philadelphia, where you can take SEPTA with only one intermediate stop; but note that it still takes 25 minutes to travel the 10 miles from PHI to downtown Philly. Ricco: I'm curious. What is the one city you are aware of that has express service?
  16. Yes, there are indeed tradeoffs. That was sort of my point; and that's something that many mass transit boosters tend to ignore.
  17. That would be nice to have an express bus to IAH. I hope they will do that. But, as with mass transit airport service in most metro areas, the ridership will not likely be very large. The 22 minute bus ride to North Line Transit Center sounds nice, but to get downtown you have to add what will probably be another 20 minutes on the train. Ieal. You have turned a 27 minute drive/taxi ride from IAH to downtown into a 42 minute ordeal, not counting wait and connect times. Even worse to go to Reliant Park. You've swapped a 31 minute drive/taxi ride for a 1 hour 12 minute ordeal, again, not counting wait and connect times.
  18. You are absolutely correct. I would not expect any of the Allen Center proposals to come to fruition any time soon.
