  1. somewhat wild speculation... .valet only. hotel will rent spaces in some nearby garage.
  2. With respect, it's a shame you didn't take a little time during that 7 1/2 years to do some research into the actual city ordinances in Houston. It might have made your complaints both on this forum and to the city and downtown organizations more productive. Houston Pavilions sought (and received) permission for "spectacular" signs, not just lit up signs. Lit up signs are allowed in downtown Houston and there are a lot of them. Perhaps you should visit some time. Take a look at Pepper Jack's. Take a look at Phoenicia. Take a look at Vic & Anthony's Take a look at Inn at the Ballpark Take a look at the Magnolia Hotel Even Houston Pavilions Books a Million had large lit up signs XXI Forever Dean's Credit Clothing The Capitol at St. Germain Hard Rock Cafe Bayou Place
  3. The short answer is "yes" The short answer is "yes"
  4. It was passed in 1988 as a transit plan with the technology unspecified. Kathy Whitmire was planning to build monorail. It was never changed to grade-separated light rail. There are a lot of things about elevated lines that make them inferior to lines on the surface. (Much more difficult and time-consuming to evacuate the vehicles in an emergency or break-down; higher cost of construction...)
  5. That, and the rail "system" he doomed was hardly a "system" and was only "good" in the sense that (and to those for whom) any rail built any where at any time is by definition "good". Further, It is a little disingeuous to claim that Lanier acted contrary to the will of the voters. He ran very explicitly on an anti-rail platform against the pro-rail incumbent, Kathy Whitmire, and he won the election.
  6. Not a chance. They don't even use all the space in the building they own.
  7. Their headquarters was also in Greenway Plaza in between the downtown and Katy Freeway locations.
  8. It's a little hard to see how restricting the hanging of signs to lower than 42 1/2 feet above the ground would in any way harm retail endeavors. I don't think there is any ordinance disallowing "lit up signs" on businesses downtown. Chipotle's sign is probably a result of their landlord's restrictions.
  9. That's exactly the sort of thing that was said about Discovery Green prior to its opening. Furthermore, with regard to your concern of it becoming a bum hangout, this park will be a lot more like Discovery Green than the "bum hangout on Gray". This park is proposed to have programming (like Discovery Green and unilke your "bum hangout"), and restaurant/retail (like Discovery Green and unlike your "bum hangout"). Bums do not tend to hang out in parks that have programming and retail/ restaurant space.
  10. Do we actually know that Camden's apartment development will not include any retail?
  11. China Air (actually known as Air China) serves 1,300 destinations? Where did you come up with that? What happened to our Editor who told us he doesn't accept claims touted by others unless he has independent knowledge of the facts claimed? ;-) And, even if the highly unlikely factoid of 1,300 destinations was true, why would or should that cause shame for any other airline?
  12. Developers will rarely build in advance of planned infrastructure. They dont trust the government to follow through.
  13. I LOL'd at that too. Damn, that Chicago HQ choice sure is paying off (not).
  14. If Chevron were to build a new building in downtown Houston, it seems pretty likely it would be on the former site of the YMCA. The only other seemingly likely location would be the site of the daycare building. (I think Chevron bought the Enron Daycare property, correct?)
  15. It's all about getting leases signed. Also, the Exxon tower will probably not be ready for tenants until at least 2016, perhaps 2017. Hines and Brookfield, and possibly the other 2 as well, could get a tenant into their proposed new tower in 2015.
  16. They can connect through the Wedge Intl Tower, which is closer than Chevron anyway.
  17. CultureMap mentions that they plan to hook the building into the tunnel system. http://houston.cultu...nnel-expansion/
  18. Ooohhh, I had always thought the Hanover Tower was going on that site between Skylark and Post Oak Lane.
  19. So it appears Shorenstein will redevelop the building as office space. Very interesting and a little surprising, given what we've been told on this forum about the building's interior. In any case, there sure are a lot of office projects bubbling in downtown Houston... Hilcorp's 2-block project (Macy's and Americana blocks) Skanska's Houston Club Building replacement Hines' next tower on Main Street Shorenstein's redevelopment of the Exxon tower plus the possible 5 Allen Center and 6 Houston Center I hope we see some dirt flying in 2013 on one or more of these projects. (On even more of a side note; damn it's frustrating to have Skanska and now Hilcorp (possibly) tear down buildings to replace them with presumably larger towers, when we still have an abundance of surface parking lots downtown. Arrrggghhh)
