  1. I think that's largely correct. But most cities just shrug it off. In Houston we wallow in it. It's like we can't get enough of the abuse.
  2. Interesting. This is only a guess: while exploring the residential conversion idea, they put it out there for lease. Costs very little to do so - if they can snag a tenant, why not?
  3. He's not talking "specifically" about anything. ;-) He's really just talking about starting to talk. This is in the VERY early stages. Actually, the pre-very early stages. Talking about getting together to talk about what we can do with the complex.
  4. Austin is far more than just government jobs and tourism. Government jobs and tourism are not causing the construction of all those skyscrapers that have been going up in Austin, not to mention the giant Tesla facility etc etc etc. From what I can tell, it looks like Jet Blue serves two destinations from AUS (JFK and BOS). AUS-JFK: 4 flights/day AUS-BOS: 3 flights/day That seems well short of anything like a hub.
  5. Moving the goalposts, I see. (You originally claimed that NOBODY wanted to spend money on the Dome and NOBODY cared that much.) And, again, there have not been numerous initiatives offered to the Harris County voters. Regardless, we are suffering from an embarrassing and pathetic lack of leadership. Refurbish, find a use for it, tear it down and replace it with something, tear it down and leave a hole in the ground. Any of those moves require some leadership. But here we are almost TWENTY-FOUR YEARS after the last baseball game was played in the Dome, with no decision, no direction, no leadership.
  6. Actually, there are quite a few windows facing the streets on Toyota Center. I happened to notice it this weekend when I was downtown for the March Madness Music Fest. Walking by Toyota Center, it was easy to see people inside, letting us know there was something going on there as well, and seeing the crowd of people flocking to the front entrance was inviting as well.
  7. I don't think it ever got revived. there was talk of it in 2021, but I don't think it ever got done.
  8. Not sure why Dallas got thrown in there. Houston is building taller and better than Dallas.
  9. Interesting about needing grass for the World Cup. I had not noticed that. On further inquiry, it turns out Eight of the 16 venues chosen to host World Cup 2026 games have artificial-turf fields. Interesting article from the Philadelphia Inquirer.
  10. The Comets disbanded (in 2008). The Tulsa team relocated from Detroit (and later relocated to Arlington, TX).
  11. Just to keep things accurate. There has been one vote on one proposal. There have not been multiple votes. As to the statement that no one from the county, city or private companies being wiling to spend any money on it . . . that is just a clear lack of leadership. Whether it is going to be refurbished/reused or demolished, either way requires some money and leadership to make something happen. (City leaders get a pass on this one since it is owned by the county.) Pathetic and embarrassing.
  12. An update from Houston Airport System: https://www.fly2houston.com/newsroom/articles/new-international-terminal-bush-airport-guiding-light-and-defining-moment-next
  13. Yeah, I think it's down to just the concrete shell. Not sure where any asbestos could even be hiding.
  14. I love the HAIF hyperbole. Those are FAR from all of downtown's fountains. But FWIW, I'm pretty sure the Sesquicentennial fountain was seriously damaged in Hurricane Harvey. I have not been able to find any information about its future. I saw something recently about a plan to get the Cotswold fountains fixed; probably in the Downtown Management District meeting minutes. Found it: "HDMD formalized and executed an agreement with Houston First to repair and oversee the maintenance of the eleven (11) "Cotswold" fountains located on Prairie, Preston and Congress beginning on January 30. The maintenance and repair costs for the Cotswold fountains will be fully reimbursed by Houston First." Tranquility Park - I've wondered about that too. I've seen some speculation about them leaking in to the below-surface parking garages, but haven't verified that and haven't seen anything about a plan to fix them. There is a proposed re-do of Tranquility Park included in the Theater District master plan, so perhaps they are just waiting for that to occur.
  15. As you know, the portions of your post that I fixed for you were: "Nobody in the county wants to spend money on an aging dome." and "NOBODY cares that much." Those were objectively false statements. (For example, I live in the county and want to spend money on the Dome, as did nearly half of the people who voted on the 2013 proposal, as did the former county commissioners.) And I and many other people indeed care that much.
  16. But there does need to be HOV lanes in order to build elevated lanes above HOV lanes as you proposed. 😉 But more to the point, probably because TxDot is planning to construct elevated managed lanes above the center of the freeway.
  17. Construction is expected to start early 2024. FWIW, the other parts of the project are: complete redo of the baggage claim hall with added belts (and potentially a raised ceiling with natural lighting) Added baggage processing capacity, including construction of an addition to the complex.
  18. NRG Stadium was paid for with bonds. The bonds are backed by (and paid for) with a combination of revenue streams: 1. Houston Rodeo lease payments. 2. Houston Texans lease payments. 3. Hotel Occupancy Taxes and 4. Taxes on Rental cars and 5. a surtax on every Rodeo and Texans ticket. Both NRG Arena and NRG Center were paid for in similar fashion. Both the Rodeo and the Texans have contractual rights to the entire complex, for which they pay a lot of money.
  19. Census Bureau released July 1, 2022 county population estimates today. Using these numbers, we can come up with their Metro population estimates: July 1, 2020: 7,140,749 July 1, 2021: 7,215,837 July 1, 2022: 7,340,118 Added 199,369 people in two years. Someone on this board recently told us our days of adding more people per year were coming to an end. So far, not so much. Houston added 75,088 from '20 to '21 and 124,281 from '21 to '22. Austin added 58,136 and 62,985. Seems the trend may have peaked.
  20. Maybe because there is no HOV lane in the middle of the highway??
  21. For clarity, here is what the person asking for the removal of all of the very detailed discussion of the West Belt project actually asked for: "What is the other TxDOT project being referenced? Can someone provide a link?" A link, not a deep, detailed, drawn-out discussion of the project.
